  • Sony’s Plan For E3 Success

Sony will be the last press conference on Monday before the actual E3 show begins on Tuesday so they better use the opportunity to absolutely hit me (and you) over the heads with how insanely awesome the PS4 is going to be. Now I have already gone on record and said that Sony has already won me over with their February press conference when they solely put the focus on games. I expect E3 to continue this, especially since Microsoft is getting a bit of blow back from their gimmick heavy Xbox One reveal (which they did say beforehand would happen, but the internet cares not).

Like with Nintendo, we will offer up a few points that we think Sony should hit on to make sure gamers know the PS4 is a powerhouse that warrants their hard earned money this fall.

    PS4 Price AND Release Date

This is in no way a guarantee to happen, but it will go a long way to helping out my wallet if I know the when and how much of the Playstation 4. Selfish? Yes, and I don’t mind. Sony could hold one or the other off for a later date, but they know all eyes will be on them on Monday so why not go ahead and throw us gamers a bone?

I still hold to my thoughts that the PS4 will beat the Xbox One to the shelves, if only by a week or so. October 25th still has a nice ring to it. It is a few weeks after a big PS3 exclusive (Beyond: Two Souls) and a week before the release of Call of Duty: Ghosts.

When it comes to the price of the system this is where the guesses are all over the place. Some analysts have recently ventured a guess and said that the PS4 could retail in the $350-$400 range. This is a pipe dream. Now don’t get me wrong, I hope to God that I can get a PS4 for under $400 come this fall, but I just do not see this happening especially with all the hardware under the hood of it. I am already mentally prepared for a $499 price point with a slight possibility of a second sku for $549. We are a different culture than 2005 when Sony floored us with “599 U.S. dollars” for the PS3. We pay $200 for new phones on a regular basis, a large section of the population have tablets that range anywhere from $250-$800, Apple overcharges for a brand name and our country proudly ponies up the cash. I don’t think Sony has to be worried of any backlash when they announce a $500+ console anymore.

    Use Your Franchise Power

The real power behind Sony is in its bevy of quality studios and their franchises. Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Polyphony, Sucker Punch, Guerrilla and Media Molecule are huge developers that handle Sony’s biggest properties and there is not a bad one in the bunch. Microsoft only wishes they had studio strength like that which is probably why they have announced a new initiative to get more studios under their umbrella. We already know that Killzone: Shadow Fall and Infamous: Second Son will be launch titles for the PS4 and should be playable at the show. That is a good start. For Sony to really take a hold of the gaming community they need to show off the PS4’s potential with their other big names. Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, God of War and others will all eventually make their way onto Sony’s next-gen machine and even just an announcement of one of these will certainly help matters. Please be Uncharted 4.

Let Microsoft Take The Hit On Used Games Fiasco

Ever since the Xbox One reveal, Microsoft has quickly gone from elation to damage control over the mixed signals about the online connectivity of its new console and the possibility of charging a full game fee for using games on other consoles. Now Sony has already gone on record and said that the PS4 will not be requiring an internet connection of any kind to play games, but the jury is still, mysteriously, out on a one-time use code for games that will link new games to owners consoles. I think this is inevitable and Sony and Microsoft are going to get a lot of flak, but it is most likely publisher driven. So since Microsoft is already the “bad guy” in this scenario let that keep being the story for as long as possible. Let the idea a new game code marinate in people’s brains for a few months before announcing that the PS4 will require them also. It may not be a popular decision, but at least most of the heat will have died down.

    Wherefore Art Thou Vita?

Even with slow sales, the Vita keeps chugging along and has, in the year and a half since its release, built up quite the quality library. The addition of PS Plus to the handheld has added a lot of extra value giving buyers anywhere from 6-11 free games with a year of Plus. Guerrilla Games Killzone: Mercenary is looking like the true current-gen handheld FPS we have been waiting on. Beyond that it gets a little thin, but fear not, Remote Play is coming along to save the day. News is that Sony is requiring all games that will release on the PS4 that are not Move oriented to have Remote Play between the console and the Vita. Now I know that Remote Play on the PSP was sketchy as hell, but the Vita is a powerhouse for a handheld system and should have no problem running a scaled down version of games with its beautiful OLED screen. The Vita will never be a competitor to the 3DS, but Sony can still ensure that it carves out its own unique niche.

    Stay The Course

It has been so far, so good for Sony and the PS4 and there is no reason why they should not leave E3 feeling as if they are in the driver’s seat for the next-gen consoles. They took a calculated risk in February when they went all in with gamers. Microsoft will keep up with their “all in one” presentation for the Xbox One so all Sony needs to do is keep hedging their bets on the gaming community wanting a system that is built from the ground up to play games. This next generation will be like no other with Sony and Microsoft splitting paths on their company strategy when it comes to consoles. To me, Sony is easily winning the word of mouth battle with gamers and come E3 all they need to do is stay focused on the games.

  • Killzone: Mercenary Moves Up Release Date

The Playstation Vita’s biggest fall release is getting a change in release date to avoid Grand Theft Auto.

Killzone: Mercenary is moving from September 17th to September 10th wisely avoiding the release of Grand Theft Auto V. The portable shooter had already set its September 17th date before GTA changed from its spring release to its current one. At least Sony is giving the Vita title a chance instead of leaving it buried.

Three of the best platforming games ever are coming the the PS Vita this summer. Sony announced the Jak and Daxter Collection that was released on the PS3 last fall would make its way onto their handeheld in June. You will get Jack and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II and Jak 3 for only $29.99.

    Check out the trailer below.

  • Killzone: Mercenary Hates Male Genitalia

One of the reasons to love your Vita right now, besides the fact that Sony is giving you a long list of free or cheap games on PS Plus, is Killzone: Mercenary. The guys at Guerrilla are really trying to make sure that this is the best looking Vita game and that it will be the first quality shooter on the console.

This new developer video shows how the team is using the power of the handheld to bring a true console experience. The game looks decidedly Killzone which is to say dark and dystopian, but it also is stunning considering it is on a handheld.

    The reason for the title?

Watching the video you see how simple touch screen swipes will handle the melee kills in the game and one of these being you straight up stabbing guys….in the dick. Yeah, I may hate my enemy, but come on, do you really need to stab them in the dick?

    Oh, we do?

OK, well let’s get to some dick stabbing!

  • Killzone: Mercenary Trailer And Screenshots

    Killzone-3-wallpaper-1920x1080-b-618x347

It looks like it is finally time for the Vita to get the quality shooter it needs and deserves. One of the main selling points of Sony’s handheld, besides the power under the hood, was the whole new world that was opened by having two analog sticks. But the Resistance and Call of Duty franchises have fallen flat on their face in the past year and failed to deliver the FPS experience that the Vita is built for. Killzone: Mercenary is looking to change that. Developed by Guerrilla Cambridge to bring the Killzone experience to our sweaty little palms.

Killzone: Mercenary has you playing as…..wait for it….a mercenary in the midst of the Helghan/ISA war and will take place after the first Killzone. You can essentially play both sides since you will be taking jobs based on who pays you more. It appears the game will have a robust weapons list from which to spend said blood money.

The game simply looks amazing. When the Vita was launched, this was the type of game you knew the system was capable of, it was just a matter of time before someone figured out how to harness the real horsepower. Just watching the trailer you could almost be fooled into thinking you are watching a PS3 trailer.

Check out the video and screenshots below to see how great Killzone is looking so far.

  • New Playstation Specs And Controller Leak?

    133020-no-used-games-support-for-next-gen-playstation

A story up on Kotaku is claiming that a source has revealed the specs list (for the development kit at least) for Sony’s new Playstation and that the new controller will be much different from the existing Dualshock. The new controller would have a touch pad much like what comes on the back of the Vita. This may also come on the back of the controller. Along with the new touch tech, the controller may also come with some type of biometric feature and have a share button which may be used for the multiple account user feature that the report also mentions.

I love my Vita, but will go on record saying that I do not like the back touch pad. I don’t mind games that use it properly (Little Deviants) but it is a pain when it is shoehorned into a game. If the reports are true I hope that some new Playstation launch titles won’t have to be forced to utilize this (like Lair for the PS3 Sixaxis).

Go take a look at the complete story over on Kotaku.

  • Review: Lego The Lord Of The Rings (PS Vita)

    Handheld Travels To Middle-Earth.

    lego-lord-of-the-rings-walkthrough

With the release of The Hobbit this year Lego seized the opportunity to release sets based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic work as well as its follow-up, The Lord of the Rings. Now as any gamer should know this inevitably meant that we would be receiving a video game translation. With Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Batman already under their gaming belt the folks at Traveller’s Tales now had the opportunity to bring one of the most beloved film trilogies to life in the wonderful world of Lego. This is the review of that game’s not as large but still enjoyable cousin.

By now, if you have played any of the Lego licensed games (Star Wars, Pirates, etc.) then you know what you are going to get here. Like my Lego Batman 2 review, you are basically fulfilling your inner loot monster by bashing everything in sight in the pursuit of Lego pieces to build structures to inaccessible areas and to spend on unlockable characters.

As I said, by now we know the name of the game so the real appeal is the license that is attached to it and The Lord of the Rings is as strong as it gets. You will make your way through all three movies with many different variations of party members from the entire fellowship with Legolas, Gimli, Boromir and more, then swapping to two or three member groups according to where in the trilogy story you happen to be playing through.

    237698-lego1

The real shame of this game is that it is, once again, a port of the 3DS version of the game which truly undermines the power of the Vita. The system is billed as a console in your hands and guess what? It is. So the fact we are made to play a simple port of another handheld is a bit disappointing knowing that this game could easily have been closer to the console version with just a little extra work. The back box art promises to take you through the open world of Middle-Earth and having played Lego Batman 2 extensively on a console apparently my definition of open world and Traveller’s Tales differs greatly. The areas are big enough to explore around to gather Lego pieces and solve minor puzzles but you will not lose yourself in the vast expanse of Tolkien’s world.

Controls are serviceable especially since the Vita has dual analogs. Make no mistake, this is a button masher and your square button will get a workout. Some areas are a bit frustrating with jumping onto small places with no real shadow to guide you as to where you are so some jumps are guesswork. Nothing will overly frustrate you but the feel of the controls are not top notch either.

On the good side is that almost every main character from the trilogy are represented well with each one having a special ability that you must use to access hidden pieces needed to continue. Gandalf can float objects into place, Gimli can bum rush into things and Aragorn can use his tracking ability are just a few of the attributes that you have at your disposal. There are some places, especially in the Fellowship section, where you will be using four or five members of your party to get secret items together.

    lego-lotr-vita-02

Like Lego Batman, The Lord of the Rings features voice acting. They have taken samples from the Peter Jackson trilogy and used them throughout the game. On the downside they do not sound all that good. It sounds like a cassette tape played over clear music. So the cut in and cut out of the voices is very noticeable but the inclusion of the movie dialogue is still a welcome sound. Also there are good bits of the soundtrack in the background and it sounds much better than the dialogue. It really does add a lot to be able to run around The Shire and hear Howard Shore’s soft hobbit theme playing.

In the end, if you are trying to decide between the console and handheld versions there really is no contest. And it still upsets me that a system as powerful as the Vita is still getting stuck with 3DS ports which hinder the quality of the game but honestly I had a little bit of fun with [amazon_link id=”B0088MVOU2″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Lego The Lord of the Rings[/amazon_link]. If you are looking for a Vita game to sink a few hours into and get your Tolkien fix it is not a bad game to pick up. Given that is on sale.

    NERD RATING- 7/10

  • Sony Reports Good Playstation 3 And Vita Sales To Start The Holiday

Sony has announced today that over 525,000 Playstation 3 consoles and 160,000 Vita’s were sold over the week of Black Friday. The Playstation 3 bundles saw a 15% increase over the same time last year and the Vita sales has the handheld off to a good start in it’s first holiday season.

Sony definitely upped its game this season with a number of different bundles available for both systems including a Playstation 3 w/ Infamous 1&2 and Uncharted 1&2. The Vita had numerous bundles including games like Call of Duty: Black Ops, Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation and Lego Batman 2.
