  • Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Teaser Trailer And Website Is No April Fool’s Day Joke….Maybe

If all of this Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon work is for an elaborate April Fool’s Day joke I may just go out in public and start throwing full cans of soda at people’s heads like the machines in Maximum Overdrive. Not only did we get a teaser trailer for the supposed DLC, but the official website was also launched today.

If there was any doubt about the 80’s insanity, the video and website put it to rest with the trailer having a old VHS look to it and the website….well it speaks for itself. It looks as though Far Cry asked John Carpenter of 30 years ago to create a futuristic tale that would make Snake Plissken proud.

Here is the official synopsis for the game from the website:

The year is 2007. It is the future. Earth has been ravaged by a nuclear war and new paths for peace must be found. A U.S. cyborg army may have found a solution: a powerful bioweapon on a distant island. A Mark IV Cyber Commando, Sergeant Rex Power Colt has been sent over to gather information and figure out what the hell is going on.

Go and take a look at the website, but get your eyes ready for oncoming assault of awesomeness.

  • What Is Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon? Maybe The Xbox Achievement List Can Shed Some Light.

Have you spent too many hours than you can count exploring Rook Island in [amazon_link id=”B0050SXX88″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Far Cry 3[/amazon_link]? Have you already reset all the outposts and shot, stabbed and mauled your way through them again? Well the wait for more Far Cry 3 may not be too far off because the mysterious Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is on its way and I will readily admit that I do not know one dam thing about it. But do I really need to? It is more Far Cry 3. It could be a downloadable pack of Vaas giving his favorite campfire recipes and I would pay money for it.

The look of the logo is what is intriguing. It completely screams 80’s in every possible way. The electrified background, the font and hot pink coloring of the Blood Dragon logo, it all looks to be going for a retro feel like when you would pump quarter after quarter into Altered Beasts or Bad Dudes at the skating rink when you were seven because you were too fat for roller skates and you would rather play as a bad dude on top of a train punching thugs in the face. Thus the name…..Bad Dudes.

    Sorry for losing track there.

Let’s take a look at the Xbox achievement list that has been released to see if we can take anything away from it.

    • Welcome to the Party, Pal – Finished Helicopter Entry
    • One Small Step – Finished First Garrison
    • Way to Go, Garri-Son – Finish all the Garrisons
    • Kill Them All – Finish all the Predator’s Path Quests
    • End Game – Finished Final Showdown
    • Nice Like Jesus – Finish all the Hostages Situations
    • Murder Nature – Kill all the Animal Types
    • Set Them Free – Destroy 5 Braincages
    • Just the Tip – Kill a Dragon with the Bow
    • Blood Dragon Down – Kill Your First Dragon
    • Dragon Slayer – Kill 25 Dragons
    • What are You Reading For? – Find all of Dr. Carlyle’s Notes
    • The Greatest Format of all Time – Find all VHS Tapes
    • Hail to the King – Reach Maximum Level and Become the Ultimate Badass
    • Running man – After saving Darling, enter Combat Mode with a Dragon and Return to Stealth
    • Tooled Up – Own all Weapons Attachment
    • Derp – Jump Down from 50 Meters
    • The Drug of the Nation – Find all TV SETS to Decrypt the Hidden Message
    • The Only True Stopper – Headshot Every Type of Enemy

Well first off, good job on the Die Hard and Evil Dead references. Finding VHS tapes further seems to give credence to the 80’s theme. So what the hell? Are we back on Rook Island in the 80’s going all Vice City on Far Cry 3? I love the mystery. Keep checking back and we will let you know as soon as we do.

  • Far Cry 3 Gets A Very Helpful Patch

I know what you are wondering.

I am done with Far Cry 3 and sure I have a metric sh** ton of relics to find and perhaps some rare animals to track down, but I am a tatted up frat douche that also happens to be a killing machine. For me to be this machine of killing…..I need to kill….like humans.

Well relief is on the way you sadistic bastards because a new patch for Far Cry 3 is out that not only gives you a new harder difficulty (Master), it also allows you to go into the options and reset all the outposts in the game letting you have more murderous fun. Because let’s face it, driving around finding relics and acting like you “accidentally” hit that dude walking on the side of the road only gets you so far.

  • More Far Cry May Be Here Sooner Than Expected

    Photo far-cry.ubi.com

Far Cry 3 was one of the big surprises last year. It was released in a busy holiday season, but great games will find their way to the forefront and has shipped 4.5 million copies since its December release. We gave the game a stellar 9.5 review and could not recommend it higher.

Now Ubisoft may be releasing more Far Cry sooner rather than later. In an interview with Joystiq, Far Cry 3 head writer Jeffrey Yohalem gave a bit of cryptic information that we may not be too far of from the return of last year’s best shooter.

“Yes, I’m working on something now that will be surprising, I think, when it’s announced. But it definitely is a ‘strike while the iron’s hot’ thing, and we’ll see.”

It sounds like we may be getting an add-on to Far Cry 3 unless Ubisoft has an ace up their sleeve and have already begun development of the fourth entry in the franchise.

    More please.

  • New Tomb Raider Video Shows Off More Base Camp And Fast Travel System

The newest trailer for [amazon_link id=”B004FS8LYK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Tomb Raider[/amazon_link] is here and it unlocks a few more of Laura’s abilities she will learn on the island.

First is the fast travel option which is unlocked when Laura finds new basecamps throughout the island. When these are opened up Laura can access them at any time by going to the map and can fast travel between the camps much like Far Cry 3. This is important because it looks like backtracking is the name of the game for unlocking all the secrets the island has to offer. Much like Metroid you can not access all of the island to begin with but can return later with your new found abilities which include making your own ziplines with your bow and arrow and rope you find as well as a powerful shotgun that can blast its way into new areas.

Tomb Raider releases on March 5th. It can not come soon enough.

  • Review: Far Cry 3

Fun, Intense and Disturbing. These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things.

    farcry3_16

“Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?

Insanity is doing the exact… same fu***ng thing… over and over again, expecting… sh** to change.”

When these lines are spoken by what may be the best video game villain of this generation, Vaas, you would never guess by the time you get done with Far Cry 3 that he was not only speaking to your character in the game, but he might as well have been speaking to the world of first-person shooters we live in. Yearly Call of Duty’s, Battlefield’s and Medal of Honor’s have deadened us to how special a shooter can be. Lucky for us, Far Cry 3 is here to turn everything you know about shooters on its head by delivering a living, breathing world and story so unpleasant and disturbing that the random killing you do inside of the game may be the least of your worries.

You play as Jason Brody, a kid with too much money and not enough responsibility. After taking a adventure trip around the globe you and your friends find yourself kidnapped on a tropical island after a skydiving trip. You begin the game locked in a cage with your brother and listening to the maddening exposition of Vaas, a pirate who explains that they are going to ransom you off to your parents and then sell you into the slave trade anyway. You escape soon after and after being knocked out awaken to find a man giving you a tattoo on your arm. He is Dennis and he is part of the Rakyat tribe. He explains that his tribe have been under oppression by the pirates of the island and he believes Jason is the one to help them get out from under the harsh rule of the pirate gang. Dennis explains the use of the tattoo on your arm, called the tatau, and how it will give you power to help defeat the pirates and Vaas. Jason agrees to help if Dennis helps him rescue his friends on the island.

When you first begin your adventure it is almost overwhelming the amount of content you have at your disposal. The map stays mostly hidden until you find one of eighteen radio towers that the pirates have cut the power to. Each tower is its own small platforming puzzle which is never difficult and I never found tedious. Imagine them as the perches in Assassin’s Creed, as you restore power to the towers, the more of the map is unveiled. As your map unfolds you will see it begin to fill up with icon upon icon, a plethora of different adventures that the island holds.

     far_cry_3_13584594133825

    Like Skyrim On Crack

When I compare this game to Skyrim it is with the thought that you can become completely engrossed in learning the island, completing side missions, defeating enemy camps and looting. The enemy camps are  scattered throughout Rook Island and each one poses a different way to approach it. You have to take over these camps for the Rakyat to gain more control of the island and once you do this you push back how many enemies you will encounter in the areas around the camps. Running in full on, guns ablaze sounds like fun but it is more fun (and more worthwhile) to use stealth at first. Each camp has two possible places to turn off the alarm system. Turn off the alarm, no reinforcements will be called in. And believe me, they will quickly call them once you are seen and they will come in force. An added incentive will give you extra XP for clearing a camp with no alarms triggered.

Once these camps are completed you open up optional bounty and hunter missions. The bounty missions are for quick reward money, but come with an exception. You must kill your bounty with a knife in the tradition of the Rakyat. Any other member of the gang may be dispatched as you will but the leader must die by a blade. Hunter missions offer you money for finding certain animals and killing them with a weapon that is chosen for you. A few of the hunts are for rare animals that can be sold off for extra cash or need to be used in creation of special items in your inventory.

For you loot fanatics Far Cry 3 understands your (and my) addiction. Now I am not saying this game is on the level of Borderlands looting (is any game?), but you can loot to your heart’s content in this game. Unlockables litter the landscape. Loot chests abound in shacks, hiding in wreckage on the shore and even in the depths of the ocean that surrounds you. Every enemy carries their own personal stash of money and paraphernalia. It’s an addiction I tell ya! Especially being OCD as I am you can be dang sure that everyone was pick pocketed clean.

Now with a loot system as large as this you have got to have some way to carry these items until you can sell them off and this is where Far Cry 3’s crafting system comes into play. You start off with a meager sized wallet and ruck sack for carrying loot and these must be expanded by crafting new ones. How you say? Well, by hunting of course!! If you want to be able to carry more money, loot, even hold more weapons, ammo, grenades, etc. you have to get your inner Ted Nugent going and head out into the wild and hunt game. Some of which are just fodder for your knife and bow and arrow skills like pigs, deer and goats. If you want to really expand your inventory then you better put on your big boy pants and get ready to go after tigers, leopards, komodo dragons and sharks. The first time you hear a komodo hiss and run at you is a bit unnerving. When you get out on the open waters and take out a shark from a boat knowing you have to now jump into the deep abyss to skin it and get back up before anything else chomps down on you is a rush. Never before in a game (for me) has the wildlife in a game become its own character. These animals are not just an afterthought, but a necessity for survival.

As your inventory capability increases and you sell of your loot, you are open to purchase a host of weapons. From handguns, shotguns, SMG’s. LMG’s, sniper rifles each have four or five variations that can also be attached with silencers, retinal sights and extended clips. Once you begin to power up more and more radio towers weapons will become available to you free of charge. That is not even adding in the ability to carry four seconday items of destruction like grenades and molotov cocktails. You won’t find more weaponry this side of a military shooter.

     How Dark Is Too Dark?

When you actually take time away from the immense number of side quests and delve into Far Cry 3’s story you are going to find that it will take you places you may not wanna go. Excessive brutal violence, rampant drug use and references, the selling of people into the sex trade and even male rape. This game pulls no punches. It will hit you in the gut with its reality and then kick you while you are down. As you begin to free the island of pirate control and have more than one run in with Vaas you begin to see that a choice will be coming for you as a character and it will not be an easy one. Believing that saving your friends is the end of your journey would be folly because in many respects it is just the beginning. Do you ,as Jason Brody, truly believe you are here to free the Rakyat people and is your place here with them? The plot is paced out so well and seems like a natural progression for Jason.

If there was one aspect of the game that doesn’t live up the greatness of the other parts it wold have to be the boss fights. They basically boil down to quick time events which I would not mind for some bosses but you begin to hate these men with such a passion that a short button mashing kind of takes away from the pleasure of defeating them. It really is a minor complaint considering how amazing the rest of the game is, but it is still there. Can’t deny it.

There is a little frustration in the controls when platforming on the radio towers but otherwise the game feels smooth in almost every aspect. Running and gunning is a breeze and the quick inventory makes weapon swapping second nature even while you are in the dead middle of a firefight. Driving is a big part of the Far Cry 3 experience with Rook Island being so massive, so I can happily say that it is pure joy just to drive around the island no matter if you are taking roads or just seeing how off-road you can go with whatever vehicle you happen to be in at the time. When you get to the coast hop in a boat and take a stroll around the island or hell, even jump on a jet ski and try to ramp off of a shallow swimming shark. You get it yet? There are lots of modes of transportation and all of them are freaking fun. Oh yeah I almost forgot….hang gliders!!!!

     Far-Cry-3-hangglider

    Good Luck Multiplayer

In a game like Far Cry 3 where the story is so memorable it can almost go forgotten that it also comes with the prerequisite multiplayer. Far Cry 3 at least attempts to change up the proceedings by adding a co-op mode also to keep you playing long after the single player is done. It was admirable of the team to try and get a co-op mode into here but it just can’t match up with the rest of the game and is nothing more than a time waster. It does have a story to go along with it that takes place six months before the events on Rook Island but it is nowhere near as deep or even decent compared to the single player. Co-op is way more linear and really breaks down into enemy waves coming at you on the maps, kind of like Horde Mode Lite.

Vs. multiplayer is nothing to write home about, but it is good for some fun and a nice change of pace when you have been playing the games for 30 or 40 hours. You have Team Deathmatch, Transmission, Domination and Firestorm modes. Transmission is basically capture the flag and Firestorm is probably the most fun mode of the mulitplayer. Both teams must find and set fire to two fuel tankers while still defending theirs, all the while the map is catching fire and changing the routes your team can take.

I applaud the developers for taking the time to at least make a halfway decent multiplayer when they simply could have not done one or just half-assed it because games are SUPPOSED to have it.

    Far Cry 3

The Difference Between Good And Great

I did not buy Far Cry 3 on release day. Far Cry 2 bored me honestly and I lumped this game into the crowd of holiday games that would probably never get played. Then I read a few reviews and some word of mouth that told me I might want to jump on this crazy train of a game. God am I glad I did! Never has a shooter engrossed me like Far Cry 3. The story is the stuff of nightmares, like the first time you watched Hostel. Wonderfully paced and even though the quick time boss battles are a bit of a downside, there is no way I can see a reason for that to affect the experience any. Vaas will change the way you think about villains in video games. When you think of the Call of Duty’s and Battlefield’s with the “terrorist of the year” bad guy, it goes to show you just how a great villain can truly make a great game. He takes those forgettable wannabe’s and slits their throats.

Rook Island holds so many mysteries and explorable areas it is near impossible to resist spending hours on end driving, running, swimming or gliding around trying to learn every nook of the vast terrain. It is beautiful and deadly all at the same time and that is the appeal. You can be admiring the sheer size of the land and taking in a wonderful view and then get mauled by a tiger. It snaps you back to reality which is exactly what Far Cry 3 does for the shooter genre. It wakes it up from the coma of yearly military FPS games. It shows you that action, adventure, looting, hunting, driving and crafting can all co-exist together in one game. Not only can it co-exist, it can thrive.

I could easily jump back into Far Cry 3 tomorrow and start it all over again. It is that good of an experience. I compare it to when I first played Bioshock or Mass Effect and knew, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that this was the reason why I play video games.

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?

    NERD RATING- 9.5/10

  • When Vaas Meets McLovin

    far-cry-3-lost-hollywood-star-location-guide

Machinima is on a roll lately. Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn hit all the right notes before the game released last November, then they were the first to roll out the lost Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome pilot which was broken up into multiple mini-sodes and now….now here is the Far Cry Experience.

Based on [amazon_link id=”B0050SYV70″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Far Cry 3[/amazon_link] (the review is coming I promise), the series stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse as himself. He and a cameraman head out onto a tropical island where they encounter Vaas and his merry band of pirates. Needless to say that things do not go so well for everyone involved.

If the man playing Vaas seems to be perfect for the role it is because that is Michael Mando, the actor that brought Vaas to life in the game as well. Does it disturb your soul to know that there is a real Vaas out there? His performance is just as great as Far Cry 3 and is watchable over and over again much like Heath Ledger’s Joker.

The video below is all the episodes that have been released combined into one video. A bit of warning: if you have played Far Cry 3 then you know what to expect, but those watching that have not should be warned there is excessive violence and language as well as some cannibalism (but I laughed, should I be worried?). Enjoy!

  • 2012 Fall/ Winter Video Game Preview Part Deux

    • Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale- Oct 23 (PS3, Vita)

There is no hard way to describe Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. Have you seen, played or otherwise heard about Super Smash Bros.? It’s that….with Playstation characters. Don’t get me wrong, I am not faulting the game for it because I love Smash Bros. and I am definitely going to be getting this. Of course there are small differences in the gameplay but it is still a four player beat em up. Characters are slowly trickling out leading to the October release and include the likes of: Cole McGrath from Infamous, Jak and Daxter, Kratos and Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal.

    • Assassin’s Creed 3- Oct. 30 (360,PS3, Wii U)

Another year, another Assassin’s Creed game. I will admit I played 1 & 2 but after that I just lost interest in running around Italy and Europe caring about what Da Vinci is doing. Ubisoft was dangerously close to turning this into the Tony Hawk of action games. Then the reveal of Asassin’s Creed 3 came and it showed a switch in timeline to the American Revolution and I got excited. And for the better part of the year, every time they have shown new footage I have been more impressed. You will be running from snow tipped treetops and even commanding ship in cannon battles. Ubisoft has said that this game will also be the end to Desmond’s storyline.

    • Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation- Oct. 30 (PS Vita)

Finally! A big name game to play on my Vita! A man can only live on so many Minis and old PSP downloads. This side story to AC3 sees you take control of a female assassin in New Orleans and the surrounding swamp lands. It will take full use of all the Vita’s features like the gyroscope and front and rear touchpad. Whether those are used well remains to be seen but I am just glad to have a big title on the Vita. I do have to question Ubisoft releasing this the same day as AC3. It seems like it will just get lost in the big release of AC3 and other games.

    • Need For Speed: Most Wanted- Oct. 30 (360, PS3, PC, Vita)

EA has finally done their long running Need For Speed franchise a massive favor by handing over the reigns to Criterion Games, the creators of my favorite racing franchise Burnout. A large open world environment welcomes gamers who will be racing around and evading cops. All info about racing times and takedows, etc. will be loaded automatically to servers and compared to friends in real time. The game is a beauty and seems to keep the spirit of Burnout alive, just in a different package.

    • WWE 13- Oct. 30 (360, PS3, Wii)

THQ has fallen on about as hard a times as you can have without completely going out of business. But one bright spot is the resurgence of their WWE license last year. By going back and starting development over from scratch and using a vastly improved physics engine, WWE 12 enjoyed massive sales. Now that THQ has raised the bar it is now their task to try and surpass that and they are hoping to do that with the addition of the Attitude Era. The WWE Legends this year will be Attitude Era stars and allow you to play through storylines and shows set in the good old TV-14 days.

    • Halo 4 (360)

Halo 4 is going to be a massive seller this fall. Of that there is no doubt. But even with the millions of guaranteed sold copies that will fly off the shelf this fall this game may be one of the biggest gamble ever for Microsoft. Bungie has left and gone their own way so it is up to 343 Studios to carry on the banner of Master Chief and they have to straddle a thin line of keeping faithful to the original Halo game while trying to blaze a new trail in the Master Chief saga. The first gameplay has looked very good and one can only hope the multiplayer can reach the heights of previous installments.

    • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2- Nov. 13 (360, PS3, PC)

I am the first one to admit that I am not a big Call of Duty fan. I haven’t truly liked a COD game since the first Modern Warfare. I keep praying Activision doesn’t turn this into Tony Hawk but I understand you gotta keep striking while the fire is hot and the COD fire is still burning strong. I will say that I am decidedly intrigued about Black Ops 2. With it’s futuristic take on the franchise, to the script written by David Goyer and music done by Trent Reznor Treyarch is trying to hit the right notes to make me pick this up. And for the COD series, that may be a win.

    • Hitman: Absolution- Nov. 20 (360, PS3, PC)

Eidos is becoming the king of bringing back dormant franchises. While about everyone has seen their footage of Tomb Raider, which is due next year, this fall they are bringing Agent 47 out of mothballs for some more garrote wiring fun. The gameplay is not ground breaking but it looks much smoother and forgiving that previous Hitman iterations. I hope this game turns out as good as it’s looking cause Agent 47 should have many more stories to tell.

    • Far Cry 3- Dec. 4 (360,PS3,PC)

Far Cry is back and it is going back to the jungle. Leaving behind the African savanna for a setting like the first game will be a welcome addition because while I liked Far Cry 2’s openness I did not like the African setting. The thing that really has me excited is the four player co-op play with it’s own story and set of objectives. And one can assume getting mysterious powers during the game will be a guarantee.

One omission is the Wii U. Since there is no release date confirmed I thought I would give the set games their time. We do know that New Super Mario Bros. Wii U should be a launch title as well as EA just announcing that Madden NFL 13, FIFA 13 and Mass Effect 3 would all be available for the Wii U at launch.

This fall doesn’t look as strong as last year but there are still many quality games to be had including some new IP’s which is a nice breather from the sequels.

    Happy gaming everyone!!
