  • Iwata Comments On Wii U Sales

    iwata1

Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, recently gave his impressions on the Wii U’s early sales figures.

“At the end of the Christmas season, it wasn’t as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom. But sales are not bad, and I feel it’s selling steadily.”

At least he is being honest about comparing the system to the meteoric start of the Wii back in 2006. Because it was near impossible to find a Wii until well into the new year whereas I just saw Wii U Deluxe Sets out in the wild this past weekend. Iwata goes on to explain that the sales may also be because of the company introducing two console sets.

“It was the first time Nintendo released two models of the game console at the same time … and I believe there was a challenge with balancing this. Specifically, inventory levels for the premium, deluxe package was unbalanced as many people wanted that version and couldn’t find it.”

Look, I think Nintendo is realistic about how the Wii U is going to sell. The original Wii was one of those concepts that hit at the exact right time with its motion controller and has gone on to sell over 100 million units. The Wii U is going to be a much harder sell but can keep up with the next generation given that Nintendo announces some killer apps that will be definite system sellers (i.e. Zelda or new 3D Mario).

  • Want A Reason To Pick Up A Pre-Owned Wii U? Here You Go.

    wii-u-console

File this under rumor for right now but a poster over at NeoGAF has found what might be a slight (not really) oversight by Nintendo. He purchased a pre-owned [amazon_link id=”B009AGXH64″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wii U[/amazon_link] from a local retailer and found a pleasant surprise. He was able to re-download all of the digital games that the previous user had purchased digitally on the Nintendo e-Shop.

The oversight is that Nintendo Network ID’s are connected to their specific Wii U console and even after the previous user had deleted his account information, the NeoGAF user, DSN2K, was still able to download the games after he created a new account on the system. So the games seem to be linked to the system, not just to the Nintendo Network ID. So if you are out looking for a [amazon_link id=”B0050SVHZO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wii U[/amazon_link] you might want to try getting a pre-owned system and you may end up getting some free games in the process.

  • Dragon Age III Swaps To Next Gen, Influenced By Skyrim

    Bioware Delays Sequel To 2014.

Dragon Age III has officially been moved to next-gen platforms and will see a release date switch from “late” 2013 to “who can guess” in 2014. The switch was announced via an EA level designer’s LinkedIn profile.

Also on the Dragon Age front is Bioware’s Aaryn Flynn saying that the next game will focus heavily on exploration which comes as welcome news to someone who was frustrated by Dragon Age II’s more linear approach. In his interview in the new issue of Game Informer, Flynn also noted that the game can not help but to be influenced by the massive success of Skyrim.

“You can’t look at a game like Skyrim and not think about how impressive what they’ve accomplished is — or [think] that’s an interesting new direction or that there was something that didn’t work well for them that we could take in a new direction.”

Let’s just hope they don’t take too much away from Skyrim and make DA3 unplayable on Playstation 3’s.

  • Satoru Iwata Unboxing A Wii U Is Oddly Fascinating

Seriously, Try And Not Be Entertained

Odds are over the next few weeks you are going to see many Wii U unboxing videos but let’s face it you won’t find one with the unbridled weirdness of watching Nintendo president Satoru Iwata unpack his company’s own console complete with gladiator music at the beginning that makes you think Spatacus is about come out and disembowel Iwata.

Wii U launches on November 18th and comes in two sets. Standard is $299.99 and the deluxe set (shown in the video) will retail for $349.99

Lastly, what is the over under on how many times you rewind the video to hear Iwata say “it’s a bit stiff” in Japanese? I am going +3.

  • Sony Shows Off Lighter, Thinner PS3.

Two New Models And Bundles Announced

Sony started off TGS 2012 by revealing what had been leaked weeks ago, that we would be getting a new model for the Playstation 3. The new model is 20% smaller than the current “slim” version and weighs 25% less.

The system will come in a 250GB and 500GB versions and will be available in limited edition bundles. The 250GB system will be released on September 25th and retail for $269.99. It will come packed with Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception: Game of the Year Edition as well as a $30 voucher for CCP Games upcoming free to play shooter Dust 514.

Dust 514 is a first person shooter based in the EVE Online universe where your online battles actually affect the real outcomes and economy of the EVE online community. The game is free to play but will have different items and weapons available through microtransactions and $30 should be a good start for anyone wanting to start on this new shooter.

The 500GB version of the system will be available on October 30th to coincide with the release of Assassin’s Creed 3. A special bundle will be ready with the system coming packed with the highly anticipated game and a free month of Playstation Plus for only $299.99. The Playstation 3 version of the game also includes four exclusive levels that can only be played on Sony’s system.

It looks like Sony is making a big push this year to get more PS3’s into homes before next year when it is presumed they will show off their next home console for the first time.
