Despicable Me 2 held on to the top spot at the box office for the second straight weekend leaving second place up for grabs between Pacific Rim and Grown Ups 2 and like most things involving our country these days, America let us down once again. The Adam Sandler “comedy” opened up to $42.5 million which is on par with what the original opened up to in 2010. Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, which got off to a strong start at Friday midnight showings and was a hot topic on Twitter all weekend, fell off as the weekend went on and could only manage $38 million. Let’s just pray that the rest of the world is more forgiving (i.e. intelligent) when it comes to the robots vs. monsters flick.

    1. Despicable Me 2- $44.7 million/ $229.2 million

    2. Grown Ups 2- $42.5/ $42.5

    3. Pacific Rim- $38.3/ $38.3

    4. The Heat- $14.0/ $112.3

    5. The Lone Ranger- $11.1/ $71.1

    6. Monsters University- $10.6/ $237.7

    7. World War Z- $9.4/ $177.0

    8. White House Down- $6.1/ $62.9

    9. Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain- $5.0/ $26.3

    10. Man of Steel- $4.8/ $280.9

Abrams’ [amazon_link id=”B00CTSDDVO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Star Trek Into Darkness[/amazon_link] will be making its way to Blu-Ray 3D, Blu-Ray and DVD on September 10th. -Ship to Ship – An in-depth and thrilling look at the filming of the iconic space jump sequence, which both defied the laws of physics and pushed the limits of visual effects.

-Brawl by the Bay – Sit in with Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch as they revisit their intense preparation for the film’s breathtaking climax.

-Continuing the Mission – An inspiring look at the partnership between the film’s crew and the organization that assists returning veterans to find meaningful ways to contribute on the home front.

  • New EW Cover Showcases Spider-Man vs. Electro

Entertainment Weekly’s new issue this week is their yearly Comic-Con issue and the cover gives us our first look at the fully-powered Electro played by Jamie Foxx. There have been photos of Foxx on set in make-up, but this is the first look we are getting with him all CGI’d up.

I like the look so far except for the outfit which may be a little much, but this is a comic movie so I can get past it. Now we just need to see what Paul Giamatti will look like when he is full-on Rhino.

    The Amazing Spider-Man 2 releases on May 2, 2014.

  • Looks Like The Guardians Of The Galaxy Cast Is Fully Realized

We have known some of the key casting for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy for a few months now. Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt would be Peter Quill aka The Star Lord, ex-WWE wrestler Dave Bautista would go green for Drax, Zoe Saldana takes on another huge sci-fi movie as Gamora and The Walking Dead’s Michael Rooker would be Yondu.

There were still big names cast in the film that had no characters attached including the likes of Benicio Del Toro and Glenn Close, but now it seems that many different outlets are saying that del Toro will play The Collector and Close will be a Nova Corps supervisor that will be Rhomann Dey’s (John C. Reilly) superior.

Take a look at the entire known cast below:

Chris Pratt- Peter Quill/ The Star-Lord

    Zoe Saldana- Gamora

    Dave Bautista- Drax the Destroyer

    Michael Rooker- Yondu

    John C. Reilly- Rhomann Dey

    Benicio Del Toro- The Collector

    Karen Gillan- Nebula

    Lee Pace- Ronan the Accuser

Glenn Close- Unnamed Nova Corp supervisor

Also here is a little Eater egg for you Parks and Rec fans out there. Chris Pratt put a picture on his Instagram yesterday showing how his work is going on getting in shape for the role.

Now this is a pleasant surprise that has made my day. The first teaser poster for Captain America: The Winter Solider has been released by Marvel just before San Diego Comic-Con. Cap’s shield has seen better days with the paint peeling off and looking distressed.

Marvel will have a big presence at the SDCC next week with Captain America, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy and maybe more secrets revealed.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier releases on April 4, 2014.

  • Ryan Reynolds Gives An Update On The “About To Be/Never To Be” Made Deadpool Movie

Even if you are a fan of [amazon_link id=”B001GCUO16″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]X-Men Origins: Wolverine[/amazon_link] (God, why?) you have to admit that the character of Wade Wilson “aka Deadpool” was completely and utterly gang raped. It was like watching Santa Claus get sodomized by the Easter Bunny while The Tooth Fairy (The Rock, not the mystical character) filmed the entire thing.

Things must be righted. Deadpool demands a better movie treatment and who in God’s name knows if we will ever get it?

How about Ryan Reynolds? You know, the guy who was Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins and is supposed to play the character again in his own solo flick fixing all of the wrongs that have been perpetrated on the character.

In an interview with Total Film, Reynolds gave the most honest update ever on a movie. It was quite Deadpool-like.

“That movie is alive and kicking, and then it’s dead as a doornail. Then it’s alive and kicking and then it’s dead… it’s like the worst relationship I’ve ever had!”

“The character knows he’s a comic-book character, he knows he’s in a film, he knows who the executives are at the studio making the movie,” Reynolds explained. “In the current iteration of the script, Deadpool is aware of the Wolverine movie. He doesn’t say anything disparaging about it but he does at one point play with the Deadpool action figure with some curiosity.

It does show you how strong nerds like me feel about Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool that he can survive a disaster the size of the last Wolverine movie and still have fans wanting him to play the part again if only to right the ship.

    Deadpool only wants three things:

    1. Boobies

    2. Tacos

    3. A good movie

  • Weekend Box Office- July 5-7, 2013

This July 4th weekend was a tale of exact opposites at the box office. On one side you have Despicable Me 2, which cost a mere $75 million to make and had one of the highest grosses for the extended five-day period. Then, on the other side, you have Disney’s The Lone Ranger, boasting Johnny Depp and a whole lot of trains that go boom to the tune of a $215 million budget which ended up being the studio’s third massive disappointment in trying to start a new franchise after Prince of Persia and John Carter. The new version of the western character could only manage $29 million over the normal weekend period and $48 million since last Wednesday.

It has to come as a huge hit to Disney who initially cancelled the filming of The Lone Ranger altogether because of a ballooning budget. It was trimmed down to a “modest” $150 million and was given the green light. That amount of money was short lived because when all was said and done The Lone Ranger came in with over a $200 million cost anyway. This doesn’t look like a bomb of John Carter size, but it will still carry the label with it forever.

    1. Despicable Me 2- $82.5 million/ $142.1 million

    2. The Lone Ranger- $29.4/ $48.9

    3. The Heat- $25.0/ $86.3

    4. Monsters University- $19.5/ $216.1

    5. World War Z- $18.2/ $158.7

    6. White House Down- $13.5/ $50.4

    7. Man of Steel- $11.4/ $271.2

    8. Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain- $10.1/ $17.4

    9. This Is The End- $5.8/ %85.5

    10. Now You See Me- $2.7/ $110.4

  • Excited About Pacific Rim? Not As Much As Hideo Kojima.

Pacific Rim does not release until July 12th, but early screenings are taking place and if Hideo Kojima has anything to say about it then this may be the movie of the summer (and not just for us Americans).

The Metal Gear Solid creator sent out a series of tweets building up the Guillermo del Toro directed film, even comparing it to the first time he watch Jurassic Park. High praise indeed.

    About The Films

    Batman Begins (2005)

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight’s emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents’ murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

    The Dark Knight (2008)

The follow-up to Batman BeginsThe Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Oldman, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

    Dark Knight Rises (2012)

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane. Christian Bale stars, along with Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman.
