  • Nerd Rating’s 2015 Gaming Predictions

    Scott

    William-Shatner-Captain-Kirk-star-trek-actors-16793318-800-538

    1. Starfox and Zelda Wii U will release in 2015.

Nintendo has said that Starfox will be playable at E3 and set for release this year. Zelda is also supposed to release this year, but I think many doubt Nintendo can make good on that. I think they know what situation the Wii U is in and is making 2015 the make or break year for the console. If Starfox and Zelda can not breathe some life into it, then the Wii U is a lost cause.

    2. Resident Evil 7 will be announced. Will drop all unnecessary bullshit and be like Resident Evil.

Resident Evil 6 was the best selling of the franchise (no, you stop buying that!) and yet, I think Resident Evil 7 will go back to its roots and try to recapture the feel of the original. Maybe set in a mansion or large facility. Prediction or just one guy’s wild fantasy?

    3. Xbox One will drop to $349 for good at E3.

Microsoft won the holiday season by dropping Xbox One to $349 along with some great bundles. The promotion ended on January 3rd and is now back to $399. While having more holiday sales is great, they still are playing catch up with the PS4. Early year sales should reflect the need to keep the price drop in effect. E3 will be a big stage to announce the new price.

    4. Batman: Arkham Knight will lead into Rocksteady’s next unannounced game featuring the Justice League.

I know that the Batman: Arkham Knight collector’s edition statue may have spoiled the end of the game, but this is something I have thought would happen for a while now. Rocksteady said they were ending their Batman story with Arkham Knight, they didn’t say anything about what story they were starting

    5. Rockstar will announce their next big release. Will be either Red Dead or Bully sequel.

Please be Red Dead. Please be Red Dead. Please be Red Dead. I will give you what you want. Please!

    1. Nintendo

This is the pivotal year for the house that Miyamoto built as far as the home console market is concerned. I love Zelda and Star Fox as much as the next guy, but those two titles are not going to suddenly move millions of systems. I’m not counting them out yet, but if Wii U sales continue to lag and they continue to lose third-party support, I don’t know what can save them.

    2. Multiplayer

Whether you loved Destiny or hated it, the fact remains that it did not permanently alter the gaming landscape as planned. In my opinion, it’s because you can’t plan game-changers like Counter-Strike, Halo, and Modern Warfare. We are due for such a game, though, and I think we will see it this year… it’s probably not Battlefield: Hardline, though. Sorry.

    3. “Hardcore” Titles

The Souls series has taken a portion of the gaming world by storm in the past five years and spawned numerous poor copy-cats, along with a few genuinely good titles of the same ilk. Both Bloodborne and Deep Down are slated for release this year, but I think we’ll see a new IP in a different genre than action-fantasy that scratches the hardcore itch and gets the attention of the industry.

    4. HD Remakes

Square Enix has already announced a PS4 re-release of their PS3 re-release of Final Fantasy X, which isn’t even a year old as I write this. Capcom is bringing DmC and Devil May Cry 4 to next-Gen, but not until after they bring us a new version of the GameCube version of the original PlayStation game Resident Evil. Considering I will buy all of those from Capcom, this trend is here to stay.

    5. Game Journalism

Whether you feel the industry is obsolete, corrupt, out-of-touch, pretentious, or just boring, it all boils down to the same thing: The traditional methods of game reporting and reviewing are dying off, replaced by social media, “let’s play” video, and live-streaming. This year, keep an eye out for ridiculous activity from publishers and existing media outlets as they try to stave off the inevitable.

     Erich

    30_GreenArrow

    1. More HD remakes

I think the trend of HD remakes is far from over I expect a Mass Effect trilogy HD bundle, Dead Space trilogy HD, and Bioshock HD

    2. An evening of the sales floor

I think that the Xbone and the PS4 will find an even sales number as the One picks up speed in China

    3. Big Announcements

Red Dead Revolution, Fallout 4, Gears, (The Gears of War Sequel) Mass Effect 4, and a new Volition game will be announced this year

    4. Delays

Kingdom Hearts, Last Guardian, Fable Legends, and Doom will all be delayed into at least 2016

    5. The Wii U continues to lag

No matter what anyone says about Smash Bros. Or a new Zelda, I genuinely believe that this poor little console needs to be put out of its misery.  Come on Wii 3 the search for Wii 2.

  • Let’s Rank The Nintendo Amiibo Figures

I am so excited for Nintendo’s Amiibo figures to release that it doesn’t really matter how I am going to use them. Train them in Smash? Open up new items in Mario Kart? Sit on my shelves and look really pretty?

OK, I will be honest, it is going to be the last one mostly. You think I care about spending money to have pieces of plastic sit on my shelf? You don’t even know.

There are 18 Amiibo figures releasing by the end of the year, here they are in order of awesomeness.*

    * Awesomeness will vary from person to person determined by childhood memories and/or trauma.

    1. Samus

    amiibo003

Look at this thing. Why would it NOT be number one on this list?

    2. Link

    amiibo002

Is he held up by a shaft of magical yellow pee with a skirt and leggings? Yep, that’s how I want it.

    3. Fox McCloud

    amiibo005

I imagine this figure as Fox running away from a very awkward conversation with Slippy about his confusing sexual thoughts.

    4. Captain Falcon

    amiibo016

While the shaft placement (I went there) is too funny, it’s a fucking Captain Falcon figure!

    5. Pit

    amiibo017

Only Nintendo can make metrosexual angels badass.

    6 Mario

    amiibo001

It is not the Mario shooting fireballs out of his nose look we grew up with. Going with a more “hadouken” this fireball in your face.

    7. Zelda

    amiibo014

I think I will place this one beside Captain Falcon to give the illusion she is the holder for him kicking a giant ass football.

    8. Little Mac

    amiibo018

Pair it with Peach for your own Nintendo version of “Ray Rice Elevator Punch-Out”.

    9. Wii Fit Trainer

    amiibo012

If you ask me why this is so high on my list be prepared for the answer you don’t want to hear.

    10. Luigi

    amiibo015

While Mario gets to shoot a fireball, little bro is stuck doing Olympic luge or the world’s longest plank.

    11. Marth

    amiibo009

I think this will be the hardest figure to find because of collector a-holes like me buying them and Nintendo not making as many as other characters.

    12. Yoshi

    amiibo010

Either he is power walking or recreating the cover to Abbey Road. Both make me happy.

    13.Donkey Kong

    amiibo006

Why there is not a barrel with this? I have no idea.

    14. Peach

    amiibo008

Looks like she is showing off a prize on Price is Right. Put her next to another toy to make it seem more important.

    15 Kirby

    amiibo004

No mad face or mouth full of stuff. Just sitting there like a fat ass. This should be higher on my list since it is the most like me.

    16. Diddy Kong

    amiibo013

The Scrappy-Doo of Nintendo. Will get this if there is a Buy One, Get One sale and he is the only one left after the one I want.

    17. Villager

    amiibo011

Stop waving! Why are you so damn happy?! I will burn your village to the ground.

    18. Pikachu

    amiibo007

Admittedly, I am not a Pokemon fan. I love everything Nintendo, but this never got to me. I know enough to know there are a shit ton of them and if Nintendo is smart they will make Amiibos of all 2,000 of them so parents can go bankrupt.

  • Six Things About Super Smash Bros. For Wii U Before Nintendo Direct “50 Things”

    Smash-Bros-3DS-Wii-U-Mega-Man-Luigi-Featured

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is rapidly approaching its November 21st release date and Nintendo will be holding a Nintendo Direct on October 23rd at 5PM CST that will show 50 “must-see things” for the brawler.

To give you a head start, here are six things we know about Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

     1. I will be Villager from Animal Crossing and I will kick your ass.

    5dc21ad2f23ae37dc7c66277ee28e4b851a0e908

    2. There will be punching and kicking in the faces, asses and balls of your favorite childhood characters.

    WiiU_SmashBros_scrnS01_02_E3

    3. Multiple old-school arguments will arise when your friend beats you as Sonic and says “see, I told you Sega was better”.

    super_smash_bros_wii_u_sonic_luigi_peach

    4. A secret mode will be shown where if you lose to the Wii Fit trainer you have to get your Wii Fit pad out of the closet and do any exercise the game tells you before continuing.

    smash_wii_fit_big

    5. When someone touches your special Gamecube controller without asking to play, you may assault their groinal regions at will.

    SuperSmashBros_WiiU_LittleMac

    6. This game should convince some to buy a Wii U. They will not because they have talked shit about the system for two years and can’t admit that it is really fun to have.

  • Review: Mario Kart 8

    original

A little bit of a warning here at the beginning. This won’t be a long, in-depth review of the why’s and where’s, ins and outs of Mario Kart 8. I know some of you are breathing a sigh of relief (or have already scrolled down to the score), and I have a good reason for this:

    It’s Mario Kart…and it’s effing FUN.

I am assuming by reading this you are already a Mario Kart fan and know the gist of it. You pick your favorite Mario character, your mode of transport, wheel type and glider, then proceed to let a string of obscenities fly out of your mouth that would make Samuel L. Jackson smile in approval.

You think I am joking? I wish you could hear a tiny bit of what it is like to play with me but I will just give you a small typed out sampling.

    -Cockface

    -A**hole/hat

    -Fu**ing Sh**

-Peach/Daisy/Rosalina can suck various parts of me

-Jailbait bit** (a favorite of my gf)

    -Sh**face Cockmaster

    -Donkey fu**ing Kong

    -Bowser, you fat fu**

    -Bi*** baby

-Eat my dick (this is said as I cross the finish line in first)

This is what happens when a grown man plays Mario his whole life and gets tired when he keeps getting red shells in his ass and only gets a coin from a box when he is in first.

The first Wii U Mario Kart game is loaded with 32 tracks consisting of 16 new tracks and 16 classic tracks from every previous Kart game including the hell that is Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64. The new tracks are as imaginative as ever and make good use of the underwater and hovercraft effects that make you pine for the F-Zero sequel that will never be. Tons of unlockable characters, karts, tires and gliders await as you win each racing class. The character variation is nothing out of the ordinary for a Mario Kart game, but does it really need to be?

I only had a few hiccups with online play at first, but since then, it has been smooth. Online is where you really test how good you are. You may think you are a drift master until you come across some guy in China that shows you know nothing, Jon Snow. It is like when I would play Tekken 3 at the arcade and absolutely own people…then a ten year old picks Eddy Gordo and whips my ass.

Don’t worry about being shoehorned into playing Mario Kart in a way you are not comfortable with. The game supports the Gamepad, Pro Controller, Wii Remote (for motion driving) and Wii Remote and Nunchuck. I am old school and have to use an analog stick and R trigger for power sliding where my girlfriend uses her Wii Remote and motion steering. The Gamepad screen has multiple features like seeing the track map, a horn and off-screen play. Yep, if you are playing two-player and have to take a poop, you can keep the game going. Believe me, this will happen.

    mariokart8-spot5

Like I said earlier, it’s Mario Kart. You know if you have enjoyed previous installments, you will love this one. It is beautiful to look at and the variety in tracks make sure that even after you have played them all, there is plenty of fun left to be had by going back again. I believe that combined with the lineup Nintendo showed at E3, Mario Kart 8 could be the beginning of a Wii U redemption.

    Sorry for the cursing.

  • Scott’s E3 2014 Predictions

    snape

Last year’s E3 is but a distant memory. We now have shiny new consoles in front of us and now we are like an addict needing a hit. E3 is here to give us a fix, if only for a brief moment. Here are my predictions of what I think will happen as the unwashed masses descend on Los Angeles to play new games and bitch about how long we have to wait on them.

    1. Unlike last year, Microsoft will win the press conference war.

Let’s not sugar-coat it, Microsoft got their ass handed to them last year. It was a beatdown of epic proportions. One that is still being seen today with the PS4 outselling the Xbox One by a good margin. Microsoft had an unpopular message (always online, Kinect must be plugged in, limits on lending games) and then to make matters worse they didn’t have their ducks in a row on the company’s message. One talking head would say one thing about always online then another would say something conflicting to that. It was as bad as bad could get. Then Sony shows up, announces the PS4 will play used games, not require an online connection AND be $100 cheaper. You could just see Sony with their arms wide open saying “we will take you in wounded gamer”.

    This year will be different.

With no console announcements this year, Microsoft and Sony will have to focus on the games and just looking at games we know are in the pipeline, Microsoft has a lot more to offer than Sony. Microsoft will be showing off games like Halo 5, the unnamed Halo collection (Halo: The Master Chief Collection most say), Sunset Overdrive, Project Spark, Quantum Break, Fable Legends as well as rumored games Ryse: Son of Rome 2, Forza Horizon 2 and a possible early look at the next Gears of War.

That’s a damn lot of games.

Sony, on the other hand, has Drive Club, The Order: 1886 (which was just delayed to 2015) and…give me a sec.

Yes, Uncharted may be shown, but with all the problems at Naughty Dog over the past few months that is not a guarantee. What else could set our panties on fire? God of War? After the sales of God of War: Ascension is that really something that will help Sony? Guerrilla is working on a new IP that could cause some excitement.

See where I am going here? I am stretching to find Sony’s big moments. I hope they prove me wrong.

    2. Super Smash Bros. Wii U will get a release date.

Expect a lot of gameplay shown and a heavy emphasis on the fighter since it will be Nintendo’s main selling point for the Wii U this fall.

    3. We will see gameplay from both Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Assassin’s Creed: Comet.

And they will look nowhere near as fun as Assassin’s Creed IV.

    4. A new Battlefield will be shown.

I cheated with this one. Battlefield: Hardline was already leaked. The part of this I am predicting is that it will be looked down on because of Battlefield 4’s complete lack of being able to work. Ever. The fact that Visceral, not DICE, is handling developing duties will not make gamers forget.

    5. Sony will show off more of Project: Morpheus

Let’s hope it is more innovation than the next Move.

    6. Zelda Wii U is shown in some way.

Whether it is pre-rendered video or gameplay, we will see a new Zelda. Don’t expect a release till late 2015 or 2016 though.

    7. Same for Gears of War.

The new Gears of War will at most get a teaser trailer, but like Link, it won’t see release till 2016.

    8. Microsoft will make Games with Gold mean something.

Playstation Plus is worth so much more than the $50 you pay. My PS3 and PS4 are loaded with so many games that I will never be able to finish them. Microsoft introduced Games with Gold last year and while they get a participation ribbon for trying, it has offered up paltry efforts compared to Plus.

This year should change things now that free games will be coming to the Xbox One. Rumors are that Ryse: Son of Rome (which I liked) will be one of the free offerings. With Microsoft making an effort to bring newer games to the 360, Games with Gold should take a step in the right direction.

That’s all I got so far. Give us some of your predictions for this year’s E3. I will be back after the show to see how my list did. I am going to say I get 5 out of 8.

    Games!

  • This One Time, On The Internet- February 26, 2014

    ghostbusters-image

Here are some quick hits from the world of movies, TV, games, sewage treatment plants, Amazon wish lists, whatever catches our fancy.

    Movies

    Ghostbusters 3

Harold Ramis passed on Monday and it has been announced that the script for Ghostbusters 3 will be “tweaked”. Fuck this movie. It has been two days since Ramis passed. Like we need a statement on the Ghostbusters 3 script? Dick holes.

    Entourage

A release date has been set for the movie. The gang will be back to hug it out on June 12, 2015.

    The Stand

Josh Boone is close to signing on to write and direct the adaptation of the Stephen King classic. It will be a “single R-rated movie that will be faithful to the book”. If this is true, the movie will run 4 hours 47 minutes.

    Godzilla

Empire has the first full-on frontal shot of the giant lizard on their new cover. It looks like Godzilla. This movie looks to mind wipe the terror of 1998 and Come With Me.

    godzilla-empire-magazine-cover

    TV

    Fargo

Here is a trailer for the FX show that stars Martin Freeman, Colin Hanks and Oliver Platt. It is a retelling of the Coen Bros. 1996 movie which is one of the best films ever made. Be excited.

    http://youtu.be/uj5LRr2Zzy4

    Daredevil

Marvel is receiving a tax incentive to film all four of their Netflix shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist) in New York City. Hell’s Kitchen, here we come.

    Being Human

SyFy has cancelled the show with Jimmy Olsen and Starkiller. People are upset. I never watched it but we should know by now SyFy loves cancelling shows that people like.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Required viewing for today is Paul Rudd taking on Jimmy Fallon in a lip-synching contest. Is there anything Ant-Man can not do?

    http://youtu.be/4LvMeYEwWGQ

    Books

    Game of Thrones

A new paragraph has been made available from George R.R. Martin’s next book in his Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter. It involves Tyrion Lannister. No, there is still no hint of a release date. It has only been three years since A Dance with Dragons so don’t expect it too soon.

Somewhere off in the far distance, a dying man was screaming for his mother. “To horse!” a man was yelling in Ghiscari, in the next camp to the north of the Second Sons. “To horse! To horse!” High and shrill, his voice carried a long way in the morning air, far beyond his own encampment. Tyrion knew just enough Ghiscari to understand the words, but the fear in his voice would have been plain in any tongue. I know how he feels.

    Games

    Wii U

The Wii U has passed the 360 in lifetime sales in Japan. Is this something to be proud of? The 360 has only sold 1.6 million units…in eight years.

    napoleon

    LEGO The Hobbit

The game will be released on April 8th. It covers the first two movies because…because. Hell if I know.

    Fable III

Peter Molyneux says that Fable III was a “trainwreck”. That probably is why I completed Fable II four times and barely finished III once.

    Mario Kart

They are making actual Mario Karts that kids can drive, further proving that your childhood sucked while your kids get all the good stuff.

    MarioKart

  • The Koopalings Take Over Mario Kart 8

    WiiU_MarioKart8_scrn11_E3resized

A new Mario Kart 8 trailer has been released and it is full of new footage showing the diversity of the tracks in the game. The Koopalings are introduced and are as annoying as in any other Mario game.

Get ready for shells in asses. Mario Kart 8 releases in May.

  • Mario Kart 8 Takes You To The Airport In New Trailer

This new trailer for Mario Kart 8 reveals a new track based at an airport that goes inside, to a runway, then inside of a plane. Then we see more tracks that show off the F-Zero style tracks that defy gravity. Get ready for shouting matches, knocking controllers out of people’s hands and koopa shells up the ass.

Mario Kart 8 releases Spring 2014.
