  • Introducing Project Shield, Nvidia’s Surprise Entry Into The Handheld Market

    A88848D61120649E667E8EE57B1C93

Nvidia surprised a lot of people at their press conference during CES 2013 by announcing their own handheld system, Project Shield. The Android device has a 5-inch 720p retinal touch display and houses Nvidia’s new Tegra chip which they showed off by giving a demonstration of the handheld using the Unreal 4 engine.

Project Shield can run in 4K through an HDMI port on the system for those 0.5% percent of TV owners that have a 4K television. You should be able to get 5-10 hours of gameplay or 24 hours of video playback. No price or release date was given.

Most things like this tend to fall by the wayside quickly but a handheld that is running Unreal Engine 4 and is open to developers should excite some gamers.

  • Iwata Comments On Wii U Sales

    iwata1

Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, recently gave his impressions on the Wii U’s early sales figures.

“At the end of the Christmas season, it wasn’t as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom. But sales are not bad, and I feel it’s selling steadily.”

At least he is being honest about comparing the system to the meteoric start of the Wii back in 2006. Because it was near impossible to find a Wii until well into the new year whereas I just saw Wii U Deluxe Sets out in the wild this past weekend. Iwata goes on to explain that the sales may also be because of the company introducing two console sets.

“It was the first time Nintendo released two models of the game console at the same time … and I believe there was a challenge with balancing this. Specifically, inventory levels for the premium, deluxe package was unbalanced as many people wanted that version and couldn’t find it.”

Look, I think Nintendo is realistic about how the Wii U is going to sell. The original Wii was one of those concepts that hit at the exact right time with its motion controller and has gone on to sell over 100 million units. The Wii U is going to be a much harder sell but can keep up with the next generation given that Nintendo announces some killer apps that will be definite system sellers (i.e. Zelda or new 3D Mario).

  • IGN, Kotaku, Others Hand Out Their Game Of The Year Awards For 2012

    journey2

While our own “Best of 2012” will be out in a little while I thought it would be good to share the games that were honored as games of the year by other sites. There was not a whole of of differing opinions between most of the major video games sites. Take a look below to see which games were 2012’s best and be sure and keep an eye out when we announce our “best of” awards.

    IGN– Journey
    Joystiq– Journey
    Kotaku– [amazon_link id=”B006WQR3V0″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]XCOM: Enemy Unknown[/amazon_link]
    Rev3Games– Journey
    Game Trailers– XCOM: Enemy Unknown

With The Walking Dead winning GOTY at the VGA’s, this year was really a great year for smaller games. XCOM may surprise some people but it is good to see the turn based RTS get back into the premier game talk and on consoles no less.

  • Want A Reason To Pick Up A Pre-Owned Wii U? Here You Go.

    wii-u-console

File this under rumor for right now but a poster over at NeoGAF has found what might be a slight (not really) oversight by Nintendo. He purchased a pre-owned [amazon_link id=”B009AGXH64″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wii U[/amazon_link] from a local retailer and found a pleasant surprise. He was able to re-download all of the digital games that the previous user had purchased digitally on the Nintendo e-Shop.

The oversight is that Nintendo Network ID’s are connected to their specific Wii U console and even after the previous user had deleted his account information, the NeoGAF user, DSN2K, was still able to download the games after he created a new account on the system. So the games seem to be linked to the system, not just to the Nintendo Network ID. So if you are out looking for a [amazon_link id=”B0050SVHZO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wii U[/amazon_link] you might want to try getting a pre-owned system and you may end up getting some free games in the process.

  • NCAA ’14 Cover Vote Has A Few Surprises

    xlarge

So let’s get beyond the fact that NCAA Football 13 was a bit frustrating in its overcompensation for NCAA 12’s problems with blocking, punt coverage and defenders blind swatting balls. Instead of showing us how they will be trying to improve NCAA 14, EA wants you to go vote for which school will represent the game on the cover.

Okay EA, I will play along…for now.

Voting is done through the game’s Facebook page by just liking the page then voting for your favorite school. You can continue to vote on all the schools until halftime of Monday’s BCS National Championship game and then the top 32 teams will move on to the next round of voting.

Some of the teams in the 32 are a little hard to believe they have a shot to win much less be in the next round of votes. For example, Kentucky is sitting at 14th. You know, that great Kentucky football program that has has such classic games as………and that magical championship run in…….. Army is sitting at 32nd and Penn State is in 10th. Jokes are too easy to come by with that so let’s just all agree that they should not be anywhere near a video game cover for a while and the fact that USC fans are too lazy or don’t care about their program enough to vote enough for this tells me that Lane Kiffin’s job may not be very secure.

  • Jurassic Life: A Jurassic Park Half-Life 2 Mod That Is A Wonder To Behold

    Hold On To Your Butts.

    chapters_1_2

A team of programmers have spent over six years developing this [amazon_link id=”B004KKXMSI” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Jurassic Park[/amazon_link] mod for Half-Life 2 called Jurassic Life. Now six years is a long time to be working on the game but when you take into account how small the group developing the mod is then it is truly amazing how this game is coming along.

They have just released a new video on their website showing off some of the locales and dinosaurs that you will be coming across. The video is also accompanied by John Williams’ iconic score which makes this mod even greater. And let’s be honest, we haven’t had a good Jurassic Park game since the SNES version (crappy Mode 7 and all) so let me just give encouragement to the developers and say we JP fans can not wait to play this when it is done.
