  • Internal Email Suggest New Xbox Will Not Require Internet Connection

Of the litany list of rumors about the next Xbox, the main one that has people talking or growing wary about Microsoft’s new console is the possibility that it could require a constant internet connection. Microsoft has been quiet on the subject while we wait for their May 21st reveal of the system to find out their plans, but an email uncovered by Ars Technica may pull a quick reverse on the subject.

This is an excerpt from the email:

“Durango (the codename for the next Xbox) is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today’s Internet. There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should ‘just work’ regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game.”

Now this is not calling the issue of always online dead. This is still pure speculation until Microsoft goes live on May 21st and unveils their new system.

  • Image Leak May Reveal The Next Xbox Name

An image has found its way online which appears to be from an Xbox dev unit and as you can see there is a name attached.

    Xbox Infinity.

The name that has been tossed around for months as discussed in my next-gen article. Now this is purely a rumor right now and the picture has not been authenticated, but where there is smoke, there is fire. And don’t forget that Microsoft has already bought up the Xbox8.com domain name.

We won’t have to wait very much longer to find out the truth. Sony has their big Playstation event tomorrow and one would assume that Microsoft will hold their event before GDC this year which will be in the next 3-4 weeks.

  • Zombi U Wii U Bundle Coming February 17th

Now this is more like it Nintendo.

While the Big N has gone on record saying that there will be no Wii U price cut (until the fall, mark it down) they did not say anything about not giving gamers awesome bundles. Behold the Zombi U Wii U bundle. The correct way to try and sell a system that is hitting a plateau. Let’s give you the rundown: a Wii U deluxe set including the 32GB black console and all the bells and whistles it comes with, a copy of Zombi U, a digital code for NintendoLand, a Wii U Pro Controller and even a Zombi U artbook.

The bundle will be available on February 17th and retail for $389.99. With Zombi U being $60 and the Pro Controller running $50 that comes to a $70 savings by my meager high school level math skills.

  • Valve’s Steam Box Is Real, Codenamed ‘Piston’

    steambox

Hey, remember how the rumor mill has been talking about Valve developing a supposed “Steam Box” for like three years? Here you go.

Guess we can chalk one up for the rumor mill.

Hardware maker Xi3 teamed with Valve and showed off a very early version of the Piston to CES. It will come with up to 1TB of storage and will be able to upgrade the CPU and RAM as well as have component updates. It will perform beyond the upcoming next generation consoles and is only about the size of a grapefruit.

No pricing was revealed but this is most likely where the differences with home consoles will be seen. Valve could just want this to be an extension of their PC market but if this is competitively priced, could they take a small chunk out of the Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo pie?

  • Nintendo Wii Mini Is A Reality….In Canada

    Oh Canada.

Continuing in the tradition of shrinking their consoles down in size to keep people interested in the product (i.e. NES 2 & SNES) Nintendo has put their shrink ray on the Wii.

The aptly names Wii Mini will release on December 7th and retail for only $99 but for right now there seems to be a catch. The Wii Mini will only be available in Canada (maybe the reason for the red design?) and there is no news on if Nintendo will be releasing the console in other territories. The system will come with a red Wii Remote and Nunchuk and will play all Wii titles but will not come with Internet capabilities or have the ability to play Gamecube games.

So chin up Canada, you are the lucky owners of a new Wii. True patriot love indeed.

  • Wii U Shows Strong First Week Sales

Nintendo’s sixth home console is off to a strong start but not quite the sales that its predecessor saw.

Reports are that Nintendo sold approximately 400,000 Wii U consoles in its first week of release. That is a strong start but not as big as the Wii’s release which saw 600,000 units sold back in 2006.

It was an all around great sales week for anything Nintendo in general. Along with the Wii U’s sales, Nintendo announced that almost 300,000 Wii’s, 275,000 DS systems and 250,000 3DS systems were sold in the same week.

Only time will tell if the Wii U is truly a hit with sales always spiking at launch and during the holiday season.

  • Will Next Xbox Have Two Very Different Versions?

More Than Hard Drives Could Seperate The Two.

Rumors abound that Microsoft is planning on releasing two vastly different console experiences next year in order to get into more living rooms of casual gamers.

When the Xbox 360 released in November 2005 the console was released in two versions (Pro and Core) in which the main difference was an attached hard drive on the Pro but it appears that when the new console is released next year one will be the true next generation console experience with all the bells and whistles that Microsoft decides to put inside while the other sku would be more of an set-top box experience that will run on Windows 8 and run as as DVR and be able to play more casual games and run apps.

While that sounds all well and good for Microsoft in their plan of getting into more casual gaming houses I can already see the headache of brick and mortar store employees having to explain to parents in the holiday season the differences in the two consoles. Not to mention the look on kids faces if they end up getting what will basically be a Microsoft TV box for Christmas.

  • You Want A Wii U Deluxe Set? Try Again Elsewhere.

Multiple Retailers Already Out Of The $350 Set.

Well that was fast. Gamestop reported that they had stopped reservations on the Wii U deluxe set last night and today the same has happened as Best Buy, Target and Toys R Us have stopped taking pre-orders in store for the 32GB system. Right now it looks like Toys R Us still has some for online reservation but if you are looking for a Wii U to reserve at most places you are going to have to go with the basic set.

Most online retailers like Amazon have yet to put up the system for pre-order but if the past two days are any indication they will not last very long.
