There is a joke here about The LEGO Movie’s success and a brick house but I will avoid that altogether. Simply put, The LEGO Movie opened HUGE.

Projections had it bringing in $45-50 million and that was blown away with $69.1 million. This is another notch in the belt of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who have already found success with the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise as well as 21 Jump Street and its soon to be released sequel.

George Clooney and Matt Damon had to settle for saving the world’s art in second place. The Monuments Men grossed $22.7 million for a decent placing against its competition. The rest of the top ten fell into place like it has looked for the past month except for new release Vampire Academy which opened anemic with $4.1 million.

    1. The LEGO Movie- $69.1 million/ $69.1 million

    2. The Monuments Men- $22.7/ $22.7

Super Bowl weekend is routinely a bad weekend at the box office. Of course, if people knew what kind of boring game they were in store for last night they might have went to see a movie instead of buying lots of food and sitting through four hours of a bird raping a horse.

Ride Along won the top spot for the third week in a row with only $12.2 million. The rest of the top ten shook out like previous weeks with Forzen, The Nut Job and Lone Survivor trailing. That Awkward Moment finished in third with $9 million. Still, if you are Zac Efron you have to feel good about yourself that there are $9 million worth of people that want to see your naked ass.

    1. Ride Along- $12.2 million/ $92.9 million

    2. Frozen- $9.3/ $360.0

    3. That Awkward Moment- $9.0/ $9.0

    4. The Nut Job- $7.6/ $50.2

    5. Lone Survivor- $7.1/ $104.8

    6. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit- $5.4/ $38.9

    7. Labor Day- $5.3/ $5.3

People decided to ride along with Kevin Hart and Ice Cube again this weekend. Before you judge me for that horrible beginning please be gentle. It is early and I have no excuse for it.

After setting the record for biggest January opening, Ride Along easily kept the top spot with $21.1 million with January’s other big story, Lone Survivor, poised to cross $100 million next week.

There was only one new release this week. I, Frankenstein could not even keep up with the horrid first week of The Legend of Hercules only bringing in $8.2 million. Both of those movies were released by Lionsgate, although I am sure the studio is not worried as they sit on the mound of cash from The Hunger Games franchise.

    1. Ride Along- $21.1 million/ $75.4 million

    2. Lone Survivor- $12.6/ $93.6

    3. The Nut Job- $12.3/ $40.2

    4. Frozen- $9.0/ $347.8

    5. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit- $8.8/ $30.1

    6. I, Frankenstein- $8.2/ $8.2

    7. American Hustle- $7.1/ $127.0

    8. August: Osage County- $5.0/ $26.5

    9. The Wolf of Wall Street- $5.0/ $98.0

    10. Devil’s Due- $2.7/ $12.8

January is no longer becoming a month for Hollywood to dump its leftovers. After Lone Survivor had the second biggest January opening ever, Ice Cube and Kevin Hart decided to one-up them. Their buddy flick, Ride Along, brought in a staggering $41.2 million, doubling the studio expectations making it the biggest January opening ever. You can expect a sequel to this (presumably called Next Ride Along followed by After Next Ride Along) before you know it.

Jack Ryan’s return to theaters was not what the character is used to. Shadow Recruit could only manage $17.2 million, only half of the opening gross for The Sum of All Fears 11 years ago. The movie only had a budget of $60 million so it may be able to break even with worldwide totals when all is said and done.

    1. Ride Along- $41.2 million/ $41.2 million

    2. Lone Survivor- $23.2/ $74.0

    3. The Nut Job- $20.5/ $20.5

    4. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit- $17.2/ $17.2

    5. Frozen- $11.9/ $332.6

    7. Devil’s Due- $8.5/ $8.5

    8. August: Osage County- $7.5/ $18.1

    frozen

Christmas time is family time as well as movie time. There were almost too many things to choose from with hobbits, ronin, princesses, aging boxers and Amy Adams making out with Jennifer Lawrence.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug barely beat Frozen to be number one for the third week in a row. The second film in the trilogy has passed $500 million worldwide. Frozen continues to defy the odds and rake in cash taking in $28.8 million in its sixth week of release and is about to cross $250 million domestically.

Among the new releases The Wolf of Wall Street took in $18.5 million and $34.3 million since Christmas Day. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and 47 Ronin disappointed. Combined the two movies made $48 million since Christmas with both having a combined budget of $290 million.

Ron Burgundy returned after nine years but his party was spoiled by a hobbit. Anchorman 2 opened to $26.7 million and $40 million since its release last Wednesday. That is not the huge opening expected but it will be a big hit with a budget of only $50 million.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug stayed in the top spot after dropping almost 60% with $31.4 million. After what some thought was a soft opening, Peter Jackson’s second film in The Hobbit trilogy is sitting on a worldwide gross of $403 million.

American Hustle opened nationwide with a lot of talk about Oscar nominations for Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams to $19.1 million while Thor: The Dark World crossed $200 million domestically.

    1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug- $31.4 million/ $127.5 million

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

Bilbo and company could not match the opening of An Unexpected Journey but still opened huge worldwide. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opened to $73.7 million down from last year’s $84.7 million but should not be cause for worry. Many thought An Unexpected Journey’s opening was disappointing and it went on to gross $1 billion worldwide. After one weekend Desolation of Smaug is sitting at $205 million with worldwide totals.

Tyler Perry released another Madea movie. This time a Christmas tale which I am sure involved her slapping kids, being funny and one of her family dealing with an abusive husband who ends up learning the true meaning of love just in time for the holidays. I swear I just made that up so if I guessed the plot of it I am sorry. Bringing in $16 million was on the low end for Madea but it was up against a lot of competition.

    1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug- $73.7 million/ $73.7 million

    2. Frozen- $22.1/ $164.3

    3. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas- $16.0/ $16.0

    OUT OF THE FURNACE

Frozen took over the top spot from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in its second week. The Disney movie has received great reviews and brought in $31.6 million. Catching Fire should have no problem reaching $400 million domestically as the first movie did. It has grossed $337 million in its first three weeks.

Out of the Furnace failed to heat up (I know, I know) bringing in only $5.3 million. With the holidays approaching I am thinking not many were looking to bring in holiday cheer with an unflinchingly violent tale of family strife.

    1. Frozen- $31.6 million/ $134.2 million

    2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire- $27.0/ $336.6

    3. Out of the Furnace- $5.3/ $5.3

It looks like droves of people headed to the theater over the holiday. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen teamed up to make it the biggest Thanksgiving weekend ever with Catching Fire adding another $110 million over the five day period. Disney’s Frozen opened way bigger than it was expected to with $93 million in five days.

On the opposite end of new releases was the Jason Statham/James Franco thriller Homefront which couldn’t break $10 million for the holiday. Jason Statham has become the Tyler Perry of action movies. You are going to get two a year and they are always the same.

    1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire- $74.5 million/ $296.5 million

    2. Frozen- $66.7/ $93.0

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opened at #1. We knew it would. The only question was what kind of records it would set. How about the biggest November opening ever and the fourth biggest weekend take in history? That is what $161.1 million will get you. It trailed only The Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. For more perspective the second film in the franchise has almost equaled Thor: The Dark World’s three week take in one weekend.

The final Hunger Games Book, Mockingjay, will be split into two movies with the first opening November 21, 2014 and the second a year later in November 2015. Just consider it your new Thanksgiving tradition. Turkey, cranberry sauce and Jennifer Lawrence.
