There is a joke here about The LEGO Movie’s success and a brick house but I will avoid that altogether. Simply put, The LEGO Movie opened HUGE.

Projections had it bringing in $45-50 million and that was blown away with $69.1 million. This is another notch in the belt of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who have already found success with the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise as well as 21 Jump Street and its soon to be released sequel.

George Clooney and Matt Damon had to settle for saving the world’s art in second place. The Monuments Men grossed $22.7 million for a decent placing against its competition. The rest of the top ten fell into place like it has looked for the past month except for new release Vampire Academy which opened anemic with $4.1 million.
