Spider-Man, Spider-Man, yada yada yada. You know how it goes.

While Spidey did not beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s take last month, it brought in $92 million which is $30 million more than the reboot grossed in its opening weekend two years ago. Sony should feel confident about their future plans with Spider-Man and his expanded universe. In three weeks the film has grossed $369 million worldwide.

    2. The Other Woman- $14.2/ $47.3

Attendance remained high at theaters over Easter weekend with Greg Kinnear finally figuring out a way to have a hit movie again.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was #1 for the third week in a row with $26.2 million. Marvel’s latest crossed $200 million domestically in three weeks as well as half a billion worldwide. It will pass Thor: The Dark World’s total domestic gross this week.

Rio 2 stayed strong in second with $22.7 million. The race for second was closer than expected with Heaven is for Real opening up to a strong $22.2 million, taking advantage of the Easter weekend. This left Transcendence to pick up the scraps. The newest from Johnny Depp opened with only $11 million. After last year’s The Lone Ranger and Transcendence, Depp needs a Pirates movie…quick.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will keep Marvel’s hot streak going. It grossed $47 million in 14 countries which is 30% above what Captain America: The Winter Soldier grossed in the same territories.

    1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier- $26.2 million/ $201.0 million

    2. Rio 2- $22.7/ $75.6

    Captain-America-The-Winter-Soldier-Spoilers

Even with some competition from Rio 2, Captain America still came out on top.

After setting a new April record with $95 million last weekend, Cap followed up with $41.3 million. The latest Marvel hit is currently sitting on $476 million worldwide since its release a few weeks ago. It will pass half a billion after next weekend. There appears to be no stopping Marvel.

Rio 2 opened in second with $39 million which is nothing to scoff at. It is on par with the original in 2011. Oculus, the genuinely scary looking horror movie opened in third with $12 million. Not bad with the movie’s budget being $5 million.

    1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier- $41.3 million/ $159 million

    2. Rio 2- $39.0/ $39.0

    3. Oculus- $12.0/ $12.0

    Captain-America-The-Winter-Soldier-Sebastian-Stan

I think it is safe to say that Captain America has taken his place behind Iron Man as Marvel’s number two hero. Captain America: The Winter Soldier easily set a new April record with $96.2 million which is $11 million more than Thor: The Dark World opened to last November. The more impressive feat is the $207 million it has earned internationally giving Cap a $303 million gross after only ten days. That is almost half of Thor: The Dark World’s total gross in a week and a half.

The rest of the top ten suffered heavily with Marvel fever on everyone’s minds.

    1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier- $96.2 million/ $96.2 million

    2. Noah- $17.0/ $72.3

    3. Divergent- $13.0/ $114.0

    4. God’s Not Dead- $7.7/ $32.5

    5. The Grand Budapest Hotel- $6.3/ $33.3

    6. Muppets Most Wanted- $6.2/ $42.1

    7. Mr. Peabody & Sherman- $5.3/ $102.2

    8. Sabotage- $1.9/ $8.7

So far, so good for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah. The biblical (but not biblical) epic took in $44 million to finish first. I am sure the audience was divided between Christians who didn’t know what they were getting into and Aronofsky fans that wanted to see how he could top Jared Leto shooting heroin into a gaping hole in his arm.

With Captain America opening next week, we will see if Noah can stay afloat. Sorry, I had a one pun limit for this article.

Frozen had a big weekend. It became the highest grossing animated film of all time passing Toy Story 3. Maybe now people can finally let it go.

    Damn, two puns.

    1. Noah- $44 million/ $44 million

    2. Divergent- $26.5/ $95.2

    3. Muppets Most Wanted- $11.3/ $33.3

    4. Mr. Peabody & Sherman- $9.5/ $94.9

    5. God’s Not Dead- $9.0/ $22.0

    6. The Grand Budapest Hotel- $8.8/ $24.4

    7. Sabotage- $5.3/ $5.3

    8. Need For Speed- $4.3/ $37.7

    First-jumper-divergent

After plenty of attempts to find the new young adult movie franchise like Twilight and The Hunger Games, we finally have a winner (money wise).

Divergent did not match the original Twilight’s take of $69 million, but its $56 million is impressive and ensures that the book series will continue in theaters.

This left Muppets Most Wanted wanting with only $16.5 million leaving Kermit and company’s fate for future installments in question.

Next week sees the release of Darren Aronofsky’s Noah and then Captain America: The Winter Soldier in two weeks. It is getting harder to tell when the summer movie season begins.

    1. Divergent- $56.0 million/ $56.0 million

    2. Muppets Most Wanted- $16.5/ $16.5

    3. Mr. Peabody & Sherman- $11.7/ $81.0

    300 RISE OF AN EMPIRE

It looks like after seven years the Spartans still hold sway over the box office. The follow-up to 2007’s 300 easily opened at #1 with $45.1 million. Even better was its international gross of $87.8 million meaning the sequel, which only had a budget of $100 million, is in the black after one weekend.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman, playing to a way different crowd than 300, opened in second with $32.5 million. Non-Stop had a strong second weekend bringing in $15.3 million. The LEGO Movie held strong in fourth.

Next week sees the release of two more high profile movies: Aaron Paul’s Need For Speed and the return of Veronica Mars. Guess which one I will be seeing, marshmallows.

    1. 300: Rise of the Empire- $45.1 million/ $45.1 million

    2. Mr. Peabody and Sherman- $32.5/ $32.5

    Non-Stop-Liam-Neeson

Even Jesus couldn’t take down Liam Neeson this weekend, but seeing as Neeson played Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia series, we will call it a 1-2 finish for the Lord.

There is almost one sure thing in Hollywood; if Neeson has a new action movie opening, it will open at #1. Non-Stop finished with $30 million beating Son of God which made way more than expected considering people had already seen the movie.

    What’s that?

Yep, Son of God is most of the Jesus story that was shown in History Channel’s big miniseries, The Bible, with deleted scenes added in to make a movie. Brilliant move seeing as Son of God brought in $26.5 million.

    My brain hurts a bit.

The LEGO Movie fell to third with $21 million, crossing $200 million domestically. Frozen continued its wonderful run becoming the newest movie to cross $1 billion worldwide.

    1. Non-Stop- $30.0 million/ $30.0 million

    2. Son of God- $26.5/ $26.5

    3. The LEGO Movie- $21.0/ $209.3

For the third week in a row The LEGO Movie claimed a new set of victims. This time bringing down Bull Durham and Jon Snow. Taking in $31.4 million easily won the weekend for the tiny feet killers. It should cross $200 million domestically next week.

Pompeii was a disaster movie that lived up to its description. The $100 million movie brought in $10 million for a third place finish. That is even below the studio lowball $15 million estimate.

Robocop had a big drop off to $9.4 million in its second weekend. Luckily it has crossed $100 million internationally making back its budget.

    1. The LEGO Movie- $31.4 million/ $183.1 million

    2. 3 Days To Kill- $12.3/ $12.3

The wonders of LEGO easily held onto the top spot over a host of new releases. The LEGO Movie grossed $48.8 million, a drop of only 29%. It has brought in $129.1 million in two weeks domestically, holding strong on weekdays as well.

Kevin Hart is riding a wave of popularity and his new movie, About Last Night, took advantage of the Valentine’s weekend with a $27 million take. It is his second hit of the year after Ride Along, which is still holding in the top ten.

Robocop settled for third with $21.5 million. It opened last Wednesday and has grossed $26.4 million. Not a strong start for the movie with a budget of $100 million. The good news for the remake is that it has made almost $70 million internationally. It has made its budget back in two weeks of worldwide release so Robocop can hardly be called a flop.

    1. The LEGO Movie- $48.8 million/ $129.1 million

    2. About Last Night- $27.0/ $27.0

    3. Robocop- $21.5/ $26.4
