  • A Game for Squares: Thomas Was Alone Review

    TWA Logo

I’m not going to talk about this game excessively, because it is a game of no excess itself.  Originally released as a Flash game in 2010, it was created solely by Mike Bithell; the only collaborative part of the game is the phenomenal soundtrack, which Bithell co-created with David Housden. Since then, it has seen releases on PC, Mac, Linux, PS3 and PS Vita. It is a puzzle-platformer where the player takes control of several AIs, who represent themselves as various quadrilaterals in a 2D environment. Each AI has a unique shape or ability that the player must use in conjunction with the others to progress through each level. The story is told through text, with accompanying narration by Danny Wallace.

    TWA Intro

And that’s about as far as I want to go into things, other than to tell you that you should go pick it up and play it, right now; or at least the next time you have three-and-a-half hours of free time. Journey, The Unfinished Swan, Quantum Conundrum, and Antichamber are the closest things I can think to compare it to, because these are all games that hinge on how much you are willing to give to them and receive in return. I’m sure there are people who would never be able to see these characters as more than colored rectangles; I personally came to feel very close to Thomas, Chris, Laura, Claire, John, James, and Sarah.

    TWA Founders

I mentioned the music and narration because the game simply would not be what it is without the involvement of either party. The score is a “procedurally-generated assembly of multiple instrument tracks over a fixed song line” according to Wikipedia. That’s the technical term for something I had noticed during play, which is that each track starts out small and then slowly builds over the course of not just each level, but each world as well. I often found myself pausing to just listen to it in the background; I also found myself coming to a dead stop any time Danny Wallace was speaking, for fear that I might miss some little nuisance in his delivery of the script.

I loved every second of Thomas Was Alone, and if I had one recommendation, it would be to make an effort not to rush through the experience. Try and detach yourself from thoughts of “beating” the game and just enjoy Claire’s super-power, or James’ unique disregard for Newtonian laws. Because this is the kind of game that you only really “experience” the first time through. It wasn’t until the credits were rolling that I realized that it was not Thomas who was alone now, but me.

  • Saints Row IV Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition Is Bat Sh** Crazy

We all know how over the top the Saints Row franchise is. People were wondering how they could possibly do any more than give gamers an actual working dubstep gun, but this is ri-damn-diculous and it is the exact reason why you should love this game.

I give to you the [amazon_link id=”B00BRQN2H4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Saints Row IV[/amazon_link] Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition. While you may be used to paying from $80-$150 on your normal collectors editions, this bad boy will set you back the paltry sum of $1 million (cue Dr. Evil finger).

Also, you get to go to space….SPACE. We shit you not.

    1…million…dollars.

The amount of content in this collector’s set runs from the odd (spy training) to the downright fu**ing weird (plastic surgery). I don’t even know if I can list all the items without slowly slipping into a coma thinking of how the guys at Deep Silver/Volition even came up with this. Just read the items above.

I see it going down a bit like this:

    Dr. Boobinshaft: Hello

Volition: Hi Doctor, we are wanting to set up a date for an appontment.

Dr. B: OK, what is your name?

Volition: Oh, it’s not for us. We are giving it away as part of a video game.

Dr. B: Seriously? How do I know if it will be a male or female or what kind of work it will be?

Volition: Well Doc we will go ahead and say that there is an 75-80% it will be a male, possibly lonely, looking for pec implants or dick work.

Saints Row IV releases on August 20th.

  • PS Vitas Only $199 At Target August 18-24th

According to a leaked Target ad, the retailer will be selling both PS Vita sets for $199 during the week of August 18-24th. That is a savings of $50 for the WiFi version and a very helpful $100 off the 3G/WiFi version. Whether this is a Target only sale or the indication of a Vita price cut is not know, but either way if you have been looking for a good time to pick up Sony’s portable this may be it.

I love my Vita and have not regretted buying it once in the year and a half I have had it. The library is ridiculously big and add in the collection of free games when you are a PS Plus member and the value is undeniable.

  • Check Out The Wonderful 101 Nintendo Direct

After watching this 20-minute presentation of [amazon_link id=”B002I08CSW” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Wonderful 101[/amazon_link], I can once again say to Nintendo:

“PLEASE GIVE THE WII U A PRICE DROP! I WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME, BUT CAN STILL NOT JUSTIFY $350 FOR THE CONSOLE.”

This video goes very in depth into the core of the gameplay, like how you will save citizens and morph into the varied array of items like a giant fist, sword and whip. This is exactly the type of game that the Wii U needs to get people excited about the system. The only problem is that you need an exclusive game like this to come out every 1-2 months. With Pikmin 3 just coming out and The Wonderful 101 in September they are the first significant releases for the system in over 6 months.

The Wonderful 101 releases on September 15th.

All Wii U complaints aside, hot damn does this game look fun!

  • Rumor Control: Will Walter White Become Lex Luthor?

    images (1)

Two candidates have emerged among the wreckage that is known as internet rumors to be frontrunners for the role of Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman (or whatever they title it) in 2015. Let’s also remind everyone that the villain is not even known to be in the movie at all at this point, but if we didn’t talk about stuff like this what would we do with our days? Work?

First up is Bryan Cranston, who, for the life of me, always seems to be up for key villain roles and is regarded as one of the finest actors working today. I mean, he was good and all on Malcolm in the Middle, but really guys.

The meth king’s name has been thrown out there by Latino Review’s El Mayimbe, who is pretty steady with his insider information. I have no doubt that Cranston would go over well with fans as well as get fans of Breaking Bad interested in the 2015 superhero team-up film. Hell, I even liked him in the Total Recall reboot and they barely used him.

Second among the big, bald wonders is Mark Strong who gave a very cryptic answer when asked if he was in the running for Lex Luthor. He simply said:

“All I can say is… watch this space.”

Now I do not know if he was pointing to his crotch at this point during the interview so I am just going to put it in the “weird Hollywood answer” section. I am going to refuse the need/want to say he would be a “strong” choice to play Superman’s main nemesis. He was one of the few bright spots in Green Lantern and his performance in AMC’s upcoming Low Winter Sun looks like it will be amazing.

At least these are more believable than the Bradley Cooper rumors when Man of Steel was filming.

  • Rumor Control: Could Jeffrey Dean Morgan Be Up For Batman?

    jeffrey_dean_morgan_attends_watchmen_panel_comic_con_17

Let’s file this under ‘Please God, let this be true”.

With the news of Warner searching for an older Batman and a possible short list being bandied about, there is plenty to get excited about when it comes to the Man of Steel sequel coming in 2015. Now we will add a new variant to this equation.

New rumors around the wonderful world of the interwebs are saying that Jeffrey Dean Morgan has actually had a meeting with Zack Snyder about possibly donning the cape and cowl opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman. Nerds will recognize Morgan as John Winchester from Supernatural and the ladies will remember him as the ghost that banged Katherine Heigl on Grey’s Anatomy and my girlfriend knows him as my “man crush” that is known, but never talked about.

The rumor is not that far-fetched with Morgan already playing The Comedian (rather expertly) in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen in 2009.

What are you all thinking about this possibility? Have any of you already set your mind on who you want to see take over the role?

Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall was one of the most talked about titles at this year’s E3 and for good reason. It looked beyond beautiful and was a shooter fans wet dream. Huge multiplayer battles with jetpacks, jumping off walls and the pure nerd delight of all the mech action easily makes this the killer app for the [amazon_link id=”B00CMQTVMI” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Xbox One[/amazon_link].

Everything about the game seems to be hitting the right notes and that keep going with the reveal of the box art today which is gorgeous in its simplicity.

    Titanfall releases in 2014.

  • New Trailer For Thor: The Dark World Is Here

Marvel has just released the new trailer for Thor: The Dark World and if you were wanting a whole lot of new footage then today is your day. The trailer features a lot more Loki which is never a bad thing. Director Alan Taylor from Game of Thrones is certainly bringing over some of the show’s distinct style to the big screen. It has a decidedly more fantasy feel to it and that is compared to the first film which was the first of the Marvel films to rely on it.

What do you think about the trailer? Does it get you excited to return to Asgard? And where was Kat Dennings? I would like more of her please.

Thor: The Dark World releases on November 8th.
