Not a whole lot has been shown of Star Trek: The Video Game beyond a handful of screenshots since last year, but now with the game’s April release looming Digital Extremes is beginning to take the wraps off of their licensed title.

The game looks to mix a lot of different game styles together. The shooting sequences are close behind the shoulder type run and gun like Dead Space or Resident Evil while there appears to be some small exploration element like Uncharted or Tomb Raider and you even get to control the Enterprise in space battles. Hopefully all of this can come together and deliver a good movie tie-in game (for once).

The next to last episode of the web series Tomb Raider: The Final Hours is now up and focuses on just how much of a strain is put on the team at Crystal Dynamics as they push themselves to get ready for console certification. Host Zachary Levi talks with Darrell Gallagher, head of Crystal Dynamics about how much last minute work his staff of eighty have to put in to find and fix every last bug and hiccup only for days before the game is due to be finished. For those of us who haven’t seen the real backstage grind that goes into a game this size it is a fascinating look.

Crystal Dynamics is putting the finishing touches on their reboot of Tomb Raider and today they showed off a new video with eleven  minutes of gameplay. The footage shows some of what we have already seen in snippets from previous looks including Lara’s ride down the rapids and parachuting out of the collapsed airplane. We do get to see Lara’s first interaction with a shanty town as well as the cover system for the game and multiple pathways in certain areas.

  • New Tomb Raider Video Shows Off More Base Camp And Fast Travel System

The newest trailer for [amazon_link id=”B004FS8LYK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Tomb Raider[/amazon_link] is here and it unlocks a few more of Laura’s abilities she will learn on the island.

First is the fast travel option which is unlocked when Laura finds new basecamps throughout the island. When these are opened up Laura can access them at any time by going to the map and can fast travel between the camps much like Far Cry 3. This is important because it looks like backtracking is the name of the game for unlocking all the secrets the island has to offer. Much like Metroid you can not access all of the island to begin with but can return later with your new found abilities which include making your own ziplines with your bow and arrow and rope you find as well as a powerful shotgun that can blast its way into new areas.

Tomb Raider releases on March 5th. It can not come soon enough.

If you are like me, you probably have a stack of games that have been started and put aside for a later date. Well that is what February is for! An idea was given on a gaming group I am a part of on Facebook (taken from a story on Kotaku) called “Four for February” in which we pick four games that we decide to finish in the 28 days of the month to catch up on the “Pile of Shame” we collect as gamers.

I will be attempting to do this beginning next month and encourage all of you who are besieged by unfinished games crying out for your time to do the same. Let us know what games you would want to attempt to finish in February. Here are my four:

    [amazon_link id=”B0076ZPYPI” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Sleeping Dogs[/amazon_link]

    [amazon_link id=”B0050SYLRK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Assassin’s Creed 3[/amazon_link]

  • Reserve A Game On The Microsoft Store And Get 1600 Points

    Dead-Space-3-Splash-Image1

There are a lot of big name titles coming out in the first half of this year and Microsoft is giving you an incentive to reserve the ones you want on their store site. The The Microsoft Store is offering a free 1600 MS Point card ($20) when you reserve any of the games they have listed on their site from the promotion. Big games like [amazon_link id=”B0050SXKU4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Grand Theft Auto 5[/amazon_link] and [amazon_link id=”B0050SWVIQ” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Dead Space 3[/amazon_link] are on the list. All in all it’s not a bad deal when you are essentially paying $39.99 for a game when you get your card.

Take a look at the list of game available for this offer.

    • Grand Theft Auto 5
    • Tomb Raider
    • Bioshock Infinite

  • Waiting On That Tomb Raider Demo? Keep Waiting.

    tomb-raider-delay

Crystal Dynamics has announced that there will be no demo released for the upcoming reboot of [amazon_link id=”B004FS8LYK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Tomb Raider[/amazon_link], saying that they did not want to spoil the story in any way and also did not want players to start the game and have a week or so break before having to pick it back up. Seems logical especially given how long we have been waiting on this game, holding off an extra week to get the full version should not bother anyone (except your hardcore trolls).

Also bucking with a recent industry trend is the fact that the game will not offer any kind of season or online pass for it’s downloadable content. This has become the norm for many big titles to offer a $20 or $30 package right at release that includes all future DLC in one package. To me, this says that they may not have a whole lot of DLC planned to justify a $30 charge.

    [amazon_link id=”B004FS8LYK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Tomb Raider[/amazon_link] will release on March 5th.

  • Tomb Raider Exclusive Xbox 360 Controller Is Simple In Design, Great To Look At

    242146-header

Special edition controllers are a regular sight. I am currently still using my [amazon_link id=”B002I0H79C” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Gears of War 3[/amazon_link] [amazon_link id=”B0050SYTJK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]controller[/amazon_link] but I have not been tempted to buy another until now.

This is the special edition Xbox 360 controller for the upcoming reboot of [amazon_link id=”B004FSE52C” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Tomb Raider[/amazon_link]. It comes with a damaged, used look complete with pre-etched scratches, fingerprints and bandages. Now some may look at this and wonder why in the world would anyone want this but I look at it and think it works because of how well it connects with the game that it is designed for. It is dirty, damaged looking and bandaged up just like Lara will be during the game. It would have been easy to slap a picture of Lara’s face on a controller and sell it but I am glad someone thought outside the box.

Purchase of the controller will also give gamers access to a special character skin in Tomb Raider’s multiplayer. The controller will cost $59.99.

    [amazon_link id=”B004FS8LYK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Tomb Raider[/amazon_link] releases on March 5th.

  • Why Should Tomb Raider Be A Must Buy?

    tombraider

March 5th is almost here and with that will see the rebirth of video game icon Lara Croft. Crystal Dynamics has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on [amazon_link id=”B004FS8LYK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Tomb Raider[/amazon_link] which sees Lara crash land on a tropical island and serves as her first adventure as we see the events that begin to shape the hardened character we know from previous installments.

The developer has been good to show off a lot of the process in making the game through a series of videos titled The Final Hours of Tomb Raider. They have been coming out every few months with the fourth installment being released this week. Hosted by Zachary Levi, (Chuck, Thor: The Dark World) the series focuses on many aspects of the development process including the motion capture process and the emotional tole the role has taken on actress Camilla Ludington. The second video shows the makers as they bring the game to the public for the first time in playable form at last year’s San Diego Comic Con. Next, you get a listen to how the game’s score came together complete with the fabrication of a brand new “instrument” made just for the unique sounds you will hear in the soundtrack.

A big announcement came when the fourth video in the series released this week with the addition of multiplayer for the first time ever in the Tomb Raider series. It is being developed by a completely separate team at Eidos Montreal. Please don’t think that this is just some tacked on multiplayer element. Teams will be using every bit of the terrain that is available including climbing walls with Lara’s climbing tool as well as being able to set booby traps for your opponents like fake ammunition crates that explode and snare traps. Zachary Levi is even a playable character so you can fulfill all of your Chuck video game fantasies (or is that just me?).

Catch up on the series below and we will keep you filled in with more [amazon_link id=”B004FSE52C” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Tomb Raider[/amazon_link] as March 5th draws near.
