  • Trey’s Game of the Year 2013

    GOTY 2013 Main

Before I reveal my choice for Game of the Year 2013, I’d like to take a moment and discuss the concept of “GOTY” selections. Awards and accolades seem almost inherent to the human experience; no matter the context, we have this ingrained desire to elevate one thing over others like it. We hold award events for everything from costumes to dogs to homemade flying machines and beyond.

In the entertainment world, this has taken the form of industry-wide events; from the Oscars to the Grammys to the MTV Video Music Awards, we take entertainment and try to qualify it. Some of these events are given more credibility than others, like an Oscar being “worth more” than a Golden Globe, and everyone seems to have their favorite program. Hell, the Razzies are an “award” event for the things people think sucked!

In the gaming industry, the Spike Video Game Awards has probably become the most public event, but their winners tend to be taken with a grain of salt by the large majority of gamers, developers, and even publishers. In gaming, there’s almost a Pokémon approach to GOTY awards; since almost every major publication makes a selection, the objective “winner” seems to be the one who catches ‘em all, so to speak.

Personally, I pay a lot of attention to the Game Developers Choice Awards, because I’m interested in what the people who make games consider to be the “best” every year. The selections from GDCA tend to highlight innovation and excellence in design more than profitability, though to describe some of the picks as “pretentious” wouldn’t be too far off base.

Personally, I think that GOTY awards have lost a lot of potency, though it’s possible they hold weight with investors that I’m overlooking, much like winning an Oscar can help boost an actor or director in terms of studio interest. The biggest direct result of the awards in recent years has been the advent of “Game of the Year” editions that include extra content, although plenty of titles have come around to this idea without needing a GOTY moniker. Of course, companies can go a little overboard when touting these accolades on a new edition…

    GOTY 2013 Batman Cover

2013 was an interesting year for my gaming habit; whereas recent previous years were overflowing with titles, this year seemed light on releases. The holiday console launch saw the usual field thinned a bit, as developers and publishers pushed titles back into the next few years. This was also the Year of the PC for me, and the creation of the Stargate SG-X saw a lot of my gaming time go into PC games from recent years that I wanted to experience.

To be 100% honest, picking anything other than[amazon_link id=”B00GXHISJE” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ] Fallout 3[/amazon_link] as my “Game of the Year” for 2013 is a lie, since no other game pulled me in like returning to the Capitol Wasteland with mods and non-existent loading times. Picking a game from 2008 was deemed “questionable,” though, despite the fact that Matt Lees over at Video Gamer has picked Dark Souls as his GOTY three years running.

All joking aside, 2013 had standout titles, and even a few unbelievably excellent pieces of gaming scattered about. For my part, I tried to pick experiences that made me think “I’m glad I play games. It’s a shame other people miss out on this stuff.” To that end, I think I’ve been rather successful.

Trey’s GOTY 2013: Thomas Was Alone

First and foremost, all credit goes to Beth for convincing me to play this game. We picked it up during the Steam sale this past summer, and it might have gotten lost amongst all of the other indie gems if she hadn’t played it first and insisted – on a daily basis – that I get around to playing it.

I’ve made a bad habit this year of falling into the “PC Master Race” mindset. As time goes by, however, I realize that the true power of a PC isn’t rendering individual hairs inside an enemy’s nose, but the accessibility to perfect little nuggets of gaming that can be played on even basic machines.

Rather than rehash my review, I’d like to focus on the exact reason this game tops the list: Surprise factor. Everyone I have talked to about this game has been astounded at how profoundly involving it is, at how effectively the elements come together and draw you in.

Please, please play this game. Don’t even tell me if you do; it’s not necessarily a water-cooler game. Do it because you’ll be a more content, slightly more complete person afterward.

    GOTY 2013 Swapper

    First Runner-Up: The Swapper

I talked about The Swapper in my Halloween editorial, and my one-word reason for it is: Atmosphere. It’s amazing how threatened I constantly felt in a game where the only characters are you, your clones, and sentient rocks. There were moments when I legitimately did not want to proceed, gripped by dread of the sheer emptiness around me.

The game is also a visual marvel, as every asset is actually a real-world set, model, or miniature blended together with stop-motion and a rendering algorithm. The result is a world that in extraordinarily detailed, even down to the minutiae, without needing a $1500 rig to run it.

    Second Runner-Up: [amazon_link id=”B003O6EB70″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]BioShock Infinite[/amazon_link]

There it is! I’m sure anyone who even perused my gratuitously loving review of Infinite is wondering why it’s not at the top of this list. I have an answer for you: It isn’t a surprise that Infinite is unbelievably good. Its pedigree demanded nothing else. The first BioShock changed the expectations for the most recent gaming generation, and became synonymous with what Triple-A gaming is capable of.

That being said, this game is just about flawless; it blends addictive, rewarding, challenging gameplay with storytelling that is genuinely affecting across the emotional scale. It is a masterpiece, a labor of love from Ken Levine and his team. I acquired it on PC during a recent Amazon sale, booted it up just to see how it runs, and ended up three hours into the game.

    Honorable Mention: [amazon_link id=”B0050SWUTQ” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Dead Space 3[/amazon_link]

Few games this year drew as much ire as Dead Space 3; between microtransactions, the increased action elements, and the inclusion of co-op, it was the focus of many poor reviews. For some, it stood for everything “wrong” with EA in recent years. I personally loved it, both in single player and in co-op, and feel it was wrongfully maligned. Also, Necromorphs are terrifying, period.

    Honorable Mention: [amazon_link id=”B00E4QOEFS” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Saints Row IV[/amazon_link]

Fun. Raw, unmitigated, completely explicit and immature fun. You can read Erich’s thoughts on how much fun, or you could just go play it. Preferably in co-op, which is the best reason I’ve found in years as to why friends are a good thing. Go ahead, though, don’t play it. I won’t care, because I’ll be riding a velociraptor while listening to “Walk the Dinosaur.”

  • Saints Row IV Review by Guest Writer Erich Wildgrube

    news_saints_row_iv_welcomes_aliens-14075

This review? I didn’t write it. Hell, I haven’t ever played more than a few hours of any Saints Row game. Luckily enough, our friend Mr. Erich Wildgrube has played them all, and was gracious enough to provide us with this freelance review. Not for money, or even a whole lot of thanks, really. In fact, he’s buying me a copy of Saints Row IV just to prove to me how awesome it is in co-op.

Hey! Who wants to write our Diablo 3 review? You’ll need someone to play it with, obviously…

This is the Way the World Ends; Not with a Bang, but a Wub-Wub : A Saints Row IV Review

First off, let me just say that I love the Saints Row games, but SRIV sets a new bar. A lot of people have complained that this game feels disjointed, that it feels like DLC for SR3; Others griped the superhuman abilities within the simulation world are (forgive my internet-speak) OP, while paradoxically complaining the real-world sections are too hard.

I would argue the way certain reviewers have been playing this game makes it disjointed.  This game is designed to go back and forth between the simulation and the real world; if you exhaust all the free roam content and then do all the structured missions, there is no payoff to getting “super homies,” extra weapons, and new powers that are then available to you.

I am aware that this title’s core concept came about as an April Fools’ joke, that then transitioned into DLC for SR3, that then became a full game; but after playing it, I am fine with its release as a standalone title. If we are all honest here, we could admit that this game would have been a nightmare as downloadable content. If nothing else, it would have required several patches for balance and bug fixes, and I don’t even know if that would have been enough to deliver a truly finished product.

The first two Saints Row games are dark, serious tales of criminal life interspersed with bits of whimsy; in contrast, The Third and IV have much more of a campy vibe – I am looking at you, dub-step gun. At the same time, this game has a few genuinely touching moments. There are character missions you do with your crew in order to progress their stories and unlock new abilities; the ones with Johnny Gat help solidify him as the “heart” of the series, while the ones with Shaundi reveal far more depth than her buxom figure and foul mouth would outwardly indicate. Fans of the series will get even more from these moments, as many of them are direct throwbacks to previous games.

    saints-row-4-key-art

The Saints Row games are known for some clunky controls, SR1 being the worst offender, and SRIV does not go unscathed. The best way to describe it is “Tom Clancy Syndrome,” where you have so much you can do that you forget which button does what, when.  For instance, I never really got taunt or compliment to work right, and only figured out the radio 75% of the way through the game.  Now as far as major mechanics go, I love me a ring menu, but the D-pad works well this time around.

Shooting is tight, and the new weapons feel very good.  Still, nothing beats the feel of jumping a hundred feet in the air, aiming where you want to land, equipping lightning as your buff, slamming into the ground as hard as you can and wiping out an enemy base without a shot fired. By the end of this game, you are nothing less than a dark god unleashing your powers on the world around you; but if you are following the flow of the game, this is a goal reached after segments where you are outnumbered and outgunned by the enemy, most of which are as intense as they are rewarding.

This is the only Saints Row that does not look significantly better than the one before, but it is also the only Saints Row that I did not notice any lag or freezing during gameplay.  I have never seen more customization options in a game, and your guns look awesome. The dialogue in this game is utter perfection; whether you are listening to Shaundi arguing with… Shaundi, or talking to Keith David about his favorite video game.

When SR1 came out all those years ago people accused it of being another GTA clone… it was probably the truth, plain and simple. SR2 was a step in the right direction, but SR3 was the jump that set these two franchises apart.  SRIV simply continues that next step.  Is it silly? Yes. Can it be unbalanced at times? &@^$ yes. Does it ever stop being Saints Row? Not even for a second.  This does not feel like a “new” game so much as it feels like coming home to Third Street to find your crew ready and waiting to hit the streets once more.

  • Saints Row IV Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition Is Bat Sh** Crazy

We all know how over the top the Saints Row franchise is. People were wondering how they could possibly do any more than give gamers an actual working dubstep gun, but this is ri-damn-diculous and it is the exact reason why you should love this game.

I give to you the [amazon_link id=”B00BRQN2H4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Saints Row IV[/amazon_link] Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition. While you may be used to paying from $80-$150 on your normal collectors editions, this bad boy will set you back the paltry sum of $1 million (cue Dr. Evil finger).

Also, you get to go to space….SPACE. We shit you not.

    1…million…dollars.

The amount of content in this collector’s set runs from the odd (spy training) to the downright fu**ing weird (plastic surgery). I don’t even know if I can list all the items without slowly slipping into a coma thinking of how the guys at Deep Silver/Volition even came up with this. Just read the items above.

I see it going down a bit like this:

    Dr. Boobinshaft: Hello

Volition: Hi Doctor, we are wanting to set up a date for an appontment.

Dr. B: OK, what is your name?

Volition: Oh, it’s not for us. We are giving it away as part of a video game.

Dr. B: Seriously? How do I know if it will be a male or female or what kind of work it will be?

Volition: Well Doc we will go ahead and say that there is an 75-80% it will be a male, possibly lonely, looking for pec implants or dick work.

Saints Row IV releases on August 20th.

With tomorrow being Independence Day, it is only appropriate that [amazon_link id=”B00BRQN2H4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Saints Row IV[/amazon_link] would release a video celebrating all the things that make us great. If a video narrated by Keith David talking about fighting for your freedom from anal-probing aliens does not make you feel patriotic as hell then you need to move to Canada*…or France.

Yeah, you read that right Keith David. Now that may not sound like anything new (especially for Mass Effect fans), but the fact Keith David is playing Keith David is so meta it makes my brain hurt with joy. I swear to God if Roddy Piper is in this game anywhere I will gladly bestow the title of “greatest game of this generation” to Saints Row IV.

Overreaction? Maybe? But I’ll be damned if I don’t love They Live.
