How odd is it to realize that the Fast series is about the have its sixth movie release? Paul Walker should definitely be thankful because I am pretty sure it has paid his mortgage for the past ten years. While I was never a huge fan of the first four in the series, the fifth (Fast Five) was undeniably fun to me because it got away from the street racing scene (which I officially give zero cares about) and turned it into a Oceans 11 heist movie on steroids.

Now the gang is all back together again in the new trailer for Fast & Furious 6 which sees them offered full pardons for their help in catching a new big bad played by Luke Wilson and assisted by Michelle Rodriguez who has died in more movies and shows than I care to count.

Fast & Furious 6 releases on May 24th.

  • Steamlight Suicide Run: Redline Review

    Pedal to the Extra-Terrestrial Metal

Love. Betrayal. Redemption. Intergalactic war. Magic princesses. Gearheads. You’ll get to experience all of this and more in Redline, a 2010 animated film from director Takeshi Koike (The Animatrix: World Record) and animation studio Madhouse (Trigun, X, Ninja Scroll). The film follows the racing exploits of “Sweet JP” as he tries to win the interstellar racing competition Redline, the culmination of five years’ worth of qualifying events. It’s a wild ride with cool cars, some great characters, slick animation, and the catchiest end-credits tune I’ve heard in a while.

    (Speed Racer + Outlaw Star) * F-Zero

The film opens the way any good racing flick should: In medias res during the Yellowline qualifying event, with the first few minutes focusing on a group of fans hanging out at one of the courses requisite checkpoints hoping to catch a glimpse of the racers as they speed by. It does a really good job of establishing the universe we’re in – multiple alien species, bets being placed on the race, fans talking about their favorite drivers – while simultaneously drawing the viewer into the anticipation of finally getting to see the cars. When they finally speed by for half a second, leaving sonic booms and cheering fans in their wake, the payoff is worth it.

From that point on, the story follows JP pretty consistently. He heads to the planet where all of the Redline participants are getting prepped, coming into contact with several of them; one racer in particular – “Cherry-Boy Hunter” Sonoshee – catches his eye as the days tick by. But he’s also got to focus on getting his car ready with the help of his childhood best friend and mechanic, Frisbee. He’s raced hard to get to this point, but events from his past and Frisbee’s ties to the mob just might cost him the race, his reputation, and his relationship with Sonoshee.

The other driving force (intended) of the plot is that the Redline race commission has decided to hold the event on Robo-World, the capitol planet of a militaristic empire who wants less-than-nothing to do with the event. As such, the commission has to enlist the help of racing fans – and even some of the racers – to plan and execute a means of having the race on this extraordinarily hostile, armed-to-the-teeth world. It’s a cool idea that helps expand a bit of our understanding of this universe, and pays off with some excellent action sequences.

Interspersed throughout the film are glimpses into the lives of the other drivers, but these never total more info than you’d find in the “bio” descriptions of each contestant in any given combat-racing or fighting video game manual. The end result is that none of them every feel as complete as I would have liked. There is one standout side-character in the form of JP’s aging four-armed “scrounger” – scrapheap and junkyard specialists who help racers and mechanics find parts for their rides.

In Red, White and Blue Flash Paint

The animation on display here ranges from fantastic to frustrating, and anyone familiar with any of Madhouse’s other work will probably immediately recognize some of my points on both sides. The overall quality is top-notch, from character designs to backgrounds to the little details on the vehicles. There are very few anime clichés on display here, and it’s obvious a lot of imagination went into this film. The characters – whether they be humans, four-armed aliens or lumbering robo-men – all move realistically; little touches like the minor limp Frisbee has add to the experience in a pleasingly subtle way.

My only complaint is that some of the action-heavy sequences get, what’s the word… frenetically muddled. The car and military ship designs are great, but they become almost unrecognizable when in motion; there were several moments when I wasn’t sure whether to be cheer or groan because I simply didn’t know who had just done what to who and how. If that sentence gave you a headache, it succeeded in getting my point across.

I watched it in hi-def, and that would be my suggested method of viewing if you can manage; unfortunately, I was only using 2-channel audio, so I can speak to surround-sound quality, but there are definitely places where it could be put to great use.

    Checkered Flag

If you like any of the three titles I compared it to in my first heading, you’ll dig Redline. It’s not an overly complicated film; hell, it’s not as complicated a film as I made it out to be at the start of this review. A dude with anime Elvis hair drives an awesome car at impossible speeds against a bunch of other cool cars while a military superpower tries to kill them. If that sounds like your cup of nitrous, then climb in and buckle up, because we’re getting to that finish line.

    NERD RATING – 8.5 / 10

  • New Game Releases. October 23, 2012.

Yep, Another Military Shooter And Cabela’s Breaks With Tradition.

    [amazon_link id=”B0050SWZHS” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Medal Of Honor: Warfighter[/amazon_link] (360, PS3, PC) $59.99

So here is EA’s second part of their one-two punch to try (and fail) to take down Call of Duty. While Battlefield 3 got so much press last year it was almost hard to forget the game was coming out, Medal of Honor felt more like Sony was advertising for it. So nothing.

    [amazon_link id=”B0050SYDEQ” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Forza Horizon[/amazon_link] (360) $59.99

The franchise that puts out titles on a regular basis and is always better than Gran Turismo (without the 7-10 year waits between games) goes open world. Forza Horizon already had great racing DNA but add in producers that used to work at racing gods Codemasters and you have a beautiful racing sim that is garnering stellar reviews.

    The Unfinished Swan (PSN) $14.99

One of the most unique looking games to come along in a long time, The Unfinished Swan has a boy entering a painting left to him by his dead mother and comes into a white world that unveils its secrets as you throw balls of black paint. Hard to describe but gorgeous to look at.

    [amazon_link id=”B008PQU3E4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Killzone Trilogy[/amazon_link] (PS3) $39.99

Sony continues to pump out the collections for their most famous franchises. Killzone 1 was a PS2 release and did not deliver on a lot of lofty promises but Killzone 2 more than made up for that with its stunning jump in graphics thanks to the Playstation 3 and great shooting mechanics. Killzone 3 was very good but didn’t feel as good story wise as 2. But still for $40 you are getting two good shooters and one very good one so not a bad deal.

    [amazon_link id=”B008HHTDP6″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2013[/amazon_link] (360, PS3, Wii) $39.99

Yeah so the only reason I am posting this is that Cabela’s has a unique tradition of releasing on the same date as Halo games which would seem like suicide and yet there continue to be Cabela’s games. But it seems that tradition is over. Here are the Mega64 guys with a little bit of the history.

    • Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale- Oct 23 (PS3, Vita)

There is no hard way to describe Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. Have you seen, played or otherwise heard about Super Smash Bros.? It’s that….with Playstation characters. Don’t get me wrong, I am not faulting the game for it because I love Smash Bros. and I am definitely going to be getting this. Of course there are small differences in the gameplay but it is still a four player beat em up. Characters are slowly trickling out leading to the October release and include the likes of: Cole McGrath from Infamous, Jak and Daxter, Kratos and Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal.

    • Assassin’s Creed 3- Oct. 30 (360,PS3, Wii U)

Another year, another Assassin’s Creed game. I will admit I played 1 & 2 but after that I just lost interest in running around Italy and Europe caring about what Da Vinci is doing. Ubisoft was dangerously close to turning this into the Tony Hawk of action games. Then the reveal of Asassin’s Creed 3 came and it showed a switch in timeline to the American Revolution and I got excited. And for the better part of the year, every time they have shown new footage I have been more impressed. You will be running from snow tipped treetops and even commanding ship in cannon battles. Ubisoft has said that this game will also be the end to Desmond’s storyline.

    • Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation- Oct. 30 (PS Vita)

Finally! A big name game to play on my Vita! A man can only live on so many Minis and old PSP downloads. This side story to AC3 sees you take control of a female assassin in New Orleans and the surrounding swamp lands. It will take full use of all the Vita’s features like the gyroscope and front and rear touchpad. Whether those are used well remains to be seen but I am just glad to have a big title on the Vita. I do have to question Ubisoft releasing this the same day as AC3. It seems like it will just get lost in the big release of AC3 and other games.

    • Need For Speed: Most Wanted- Oct. 30 (360, PS3, PC, Vita)

EA has finally done their long running Need For Speed franchise a massive favor by handing over the reigns to Criterion Games, the creators of my favorite racing franchise Burnout. A large open world environment welcomes gamers who will be racing around and evading cops. All info about racing times and takedows, etc. will be loaded automatically to servers and compared to friends in real time. The game is a beauty and seems to keep the spirit of Burnout alive, just in a different package.

    • WWE 13- Oct. 30 (360, PS3, Wii)

THQ has fallen on about as hard a times as you can have without completely going out of business. But one bright spot is the resurgence of their WWE license last year. By going back and starting development over from scratch and using a vastly improved physics engine, WWE 12 enjoyed massive sales. Now that THQ has raised the bar it is now their task to try and surpass that and they are hoping to do that with the addition of the Attitude Era. The WWE Legends this year will be Attitude Era stars and allow you to play through storylines and shows set in the good old TV-14 days.

    • Halo 4 (360)

Halo 4 is going to be a massive seller this fall. Of that there is no doubt. But even with the millions of guaranteed sold copies that will fly off the shelf this fall this game may be one of the biggest gamble ever for Microsoft. Bungie has left and gone their own way so it is up to 343 Studios to carry on the banner of Master Chief and they have to straddle a thin line of keeping faithful to the original Halo game while trying to blaze a new trail in the Master Chief saga. The first gameplay has looked very good and one can only hope the multiplayer can reach the heights of previous installments.

    • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2- Nov. 13 (360, PS3, PC)

I am the first one to admit that I am not a big Call of Duty fan. I haven’t truly liked a COD game since the first Modern Warfare. I keep praying Activision doesn’t turn this into Tony Hawk but I understand you gotta keep striking while the fire is hot and the COD fire is still burning strong. I will say that I am decidedly intrigued about Black Ops 2. With it’s futuristic take on the franchise, to the script written by David Goyer and music done by Trent Reznor Treyarch is trying to hit the right notes to make me pick this up. And for the COD series, that may be a win.

    • Hitman: Absolution- Nov. 20 (360, PS3, PC)

Eidos is becoming the king of bringing back dormant franchises. While about everyone has seen their footage of Tomb Raider, which is due next year, this fall they are bringing Agent 47 out of mothballs for some more garrote wiring fun. The gameplay is not ground breaking but it looks much smoother and forgiving that previous Hitman iterations. I hope this game turns out as good as it’s looking cause Agent 47 should have many more stories to tell.

    • Far Cry 3- Dec. 4 (360,PS3,PC)

Far Cry is back and it is going back to the jungle. Leaving behind the African savanna for a setting like the first game will be a welcome addition because while I liked Far Cry 2’s openness I did not like the African setting. The thing that really has me excited is the four player co-op play with it’s own story and set of objectives. And one can assume getting mysterious powers during the game will be a guarantee.

One omission is the Wii U. Since there is no release date confirmed I thought I would give the set games their time. We do know that New Super Mario Bros. Wii U should be a launch title as well as EA just announcing that Madden NFL 13, FIFA 13 and Mass Effect 3 would all be available for the Wii U at launch.

This fall doesn’t look as strong as last year but there are still many quality games to be had including some new IP’s which is a nice breather from the sequels.

    Happy gaming everyone!!
