It is only a little over a week until the [amazon_link id=”B00DE2W5XG” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Playstation 4[/amazon_link] is released and we are counting down the days. Sony has released four new videos showing off the various things the console features including remote play and the redesigned Dualshock 4 controller.
Keep checking back between now and November 15th for a lot of PS4 news as the next generation begins.
With the Playstation 4 only a few weeks from release, Sony has posted what they call the “Ultimate FAQ” about their next-gen console. Let’s take a look at the details in three handy categories for you fine people.
The Good
-The Playstation 4 will release on November 15th in North America for $399.99.
-HDMI cable included (at last)
-PS4 is designed with an internal power supply, so it does not have an external
“power brick.”
-PS4 is capable of 10x the processing power of the PS3 system. The system
features an optimized design featuring a unified 8GB of high-speed GDDR5 RAM, an
eight core X86 CPU, and a powerful graphics processor.
-The majority of new features that have been announced will be available when PS4
launches. These features include background downloads, cross-game voice chat,
transitioning to a network based on real-world friends, and live streaming
gameplay footage via Ustream and Twitch.
-PS4 supports up to 2,000 online friends, an expansion of the 100 friends limit
for the PS3 system.
-You can continue to play a game as a patch is downloading.
– One PS Plus membership will continue to grant benefits for your PS3 and PS Vita
system, even after you pick up a PS4.
-You can use content you’ve purchased on up to two PS4 systems simultaneously —
simply sign into a friends’ PS4, and the content you’ve purchased will be
available as long as you remain signed in.
The Bad
-The PS4 will not support an external hard drive. PS4 is equipped with a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive. Users can choose to install
a new hard drive so long as it complies with these standards, is no thicker than
9.5mm, and is larger than 160GB.
-Support for high-resolution 4K output for still images and movie content is in consideration, but there are no further details to share at this time. PS4 does not currently support 4K output for games.
-PS4 will not support Dynamic Themes as they currently exist on the PS3 system.
-We strongly recommend that Remote Play be used within the same WiFi network
where PS4 is connected. Remote Play may or may not work over a wide area network.
-You can not share your captured videos on YouTube.
The Random
-What’s in the box? Playstation 4 console, Dualshock 4 controller, micro USB cable for charging controller, mono headset for voice chat, power cable and HDMI cable.
-Input/ Output ports: HDMI OUT, DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL AUDIO), Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports, and an
auxiliary connector reserved for PlayStation Camera. PS4 also features
integrated 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi for wireless internet connectivity and Bluetooth
2.1 for DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller connectivity.
-PS4 can be used in the horizontal or vertical position. In North America,
vertical stands for PS4 will be released by partners as officially licensed
program products during PS4’s launch window.
-Blu-Ray and DVD playback with PS4 (duh). No audio CD capability.
-PS4 supports up to four DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers at one time.
-Remote Play will work best when the PS Vita system is located within the same WiFi network where PS4 is connected. We also recommend that PS4 be connected to the local area network via an Ethernet cable, that a router suitable for gaming be used and that the PS Vita system be within close proximity of the WiFi access point so that the connection is free of interference.

Taking on Apple TV, Ouya and other Android based boxes at the same time is not an easy thing to do, but Sony is going for the win with the PS Vita TV. The small (6x10cm) box that will play PS Vita games, connect to the PS Network to play PSP and PS1 classics as well as connect to TV based services like Hulu and NicoNico Douga (in Japan). You can also use Sony’s great Twitter app.
The box has a slot for Vita games, memory cards, HDMI output, Ethernet ports and USB ports.
Not all Vita games will be available for play due to the various features the Vita utilizes like the touch screen, but over 100 Vita titles will be available.
The device can also be used to connect to the [amazon_link id=”B00CMQTVQO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Playstation 4[/amazon_link] for remote play when your console is not in the room with you. Am I the only one that thinks this is pure brilliance? If my PS4 is hooked up in my living room and I want to play it in my bedroom with my PS Vita TV in there I can just remote connect to the console? Nice.
PS Vita TV releases on November 14th in Japan for $100. A set that comes with a Dualshock 3 controller will cost $150. There is no worldwide release information.
It was announced at the Gamestop Expo in Las Vegas that all Gamestop managers would be receiving a [amazon_link id=”B00CMQTVQO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Playstation 4[/amazon_link] and seven games as well as an [amazon_link id=”B00CMQTVMI” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Xbox One[/amazon_link].
Personal note: What the fu**? If you are a Gamestop manager it is so great you are getting both consoles. I am happy for you. I guess I just missed the truck full of goodwill from Sony and Microsoft. When I managed an EB Games eight years ago I was lucky to get a nice lanyard from Sony or some Xbox pens. Hell, it was like Christmas morning when Nintendo would throw a free DS game your way.
The Playstation Vita will finally be getting a price drop to $199 as of……now. Also the price of the memory cards will see a sizable reduction. For people that have been considering buying a Vita, that is what we call a win/win. For those of us with [amazon_link id=”B003O6EATE” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Vita’s[/amazon_link]…just a win, but a good one.
Sony has revealed that, while the [amazon_link id=”B00CMQTVQO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]PS4[/amazon_link] will come equipped with an impressive 8GB of GDDR5 memory, only 4.5GB of that is available to game developers.
3.5GB is reserved on the system to run Sony’s new OS with a 1GB of “flexible memory” that can be pulled from the OS to use for the games if needed upping the total to 5.5GB. So, in response, the internet community has done what they do so well and jumped off the deep end in response with some morons in comment threads saying they will cancel their pre-orders because of this.
Why?
No game is going to need most of the 8GB on the system. Hell, most games will be good with less than the 4.5GB and very few, I am assuming, will need to stretch into the extra memory. Developers have a sh**ton of space to work with and, if anything, the 3.5GB reserved for the OS on the system will mean that we will get a much better experience than we are used to with the PS3, including the ability to play while downloading and a much better running PSN.
Slow down, bleeding hearts. Take a breath and everything will be alright.
If you are still playing through all of the goodies Sony gave you in June (Deus Ex, Saints Row: The Third, XCOM, etc.) just know that there is no rest for the weary. It is time for July’s offerings which includes EA’s Battlefield 3 for you military shooter fans (or non-fans like me, but I will play it for free).
Check out the full list of your PS Plus freebies for July:
-Battlefield 3
-Jet Set Radio
-Dokuro
-Oddworld: Munch’s Odyssey HD
-Metal Slug XX (PS Vita/ PSP)
And be sure and download the free titles before they expire this month including The Cave, Deus Ex and more.
ZeniMax Online is bringing The Elder Scrolls Online to both the PS4 and the Xbox One in Spring 2014. The announcement was made tonight at the Sony press conference and also said that PS4 owners will have access to the beta for the game before anyone else due to a new agreement with Sony.
This is insanely great news for people like me who don’t have a quality PC to run the game like I would want.
To the insane applause of the crowd attending the Sony press conference, Jack Tretton announced that the PS4 will support all used game for the next-gen console and also will not require any kind of internet connection to play game discs.
This is a direct kick in the taint to Microsoft, who has been in damage control since announcing their restrictions for the Xbox One. One would think with how strong Sony brought it tonight and how the gaming community is reacting to Sony’s news, Microsoft might need to decide a shift in strategy before too much ground is lost.
