In the wake of Disney shutting down LucasArts, Raven Software has gone and done the fans a solid by releasing the source code for both Star Wars: Jedi Knight games, Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast. In the hands of the internet community I am excited to see what will come from so many people having access to this code. This is not to be confused with the Jake Gyllenhaal movie on a train.

Raven released an official statement about this via Kotaku:

“Raven is sad to hear about the closing of LucasArts today, we respected them and enjoyed working with them over the years. We wish the best for all the talented people who were let go and hope they find good work in studios in the industry.

We loved and appreciated the experience of getting to make Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy for LucasArts. As a gift to the persistently loyal fanbase for our Jedi games and in memory of LucasArts, we are releasing the source code for both games for people to enjoy and play with.”

  • Star Wars Spinoff Movies Confirmed, Will Center On Young Han And Boba Fett

In news that really didn’t surprise anyone, Disney is damn sure going to get their $4 billion worth out of the Star Wars license.

In other news that may surprise, the rumored standalone Star Wars films that will center on stories outside the new trilogy are officially happening with Empire scribe Lawrence Kasdan and Sherlock Holmes writer Simon Kinberg working on the scripts.

But we already heard about that. I hear you exclaiming.

I know that. The surprising part is that it has been found out that one movie will focus on a young Han Solo and his origin story and the second will center on everyone’s favorite Sarlacc dinner (yes, I know he didn’t die technically) and bounty hunter Boba Fett.

The Boba Fett movie would either take place between A New Hope and Empire or between Empire and Return of the Jedi. Either way, as long as they get as far away from the horrible orphan boy clone in Episode 2, then we will be good to go.

On the Han side of things, we don’t know if this will be how he met Chewbacca or if the Wookie will even be involved. The most fun aspect of this new Han-centric movie has got to be the casting. Let’s take for granted that a script by Kasdan or Kinberg is going to be pretty good. Now who do you find to take over an iconic role this large? And do you try to get Harrison Ford to come back? Maybe have Han reflecting back on days gone by as he sits on his intergalactic rocking chair.

  • Star Wars Episodes VIII And IX Have Their Screenwriters

New Trilogy Begins To Take Shape.

You thought Disney was on the ball by getting Michael Arndt so quickly to begin work on Episode VII? Well here’s proof that they aren’t playing around with getting this new trilogy into theaters.

Disney has gotten Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg to serve as writers and producers on Episodes VIII and IX. If you are unaware as to why this is a big deal, Kasdan was the screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as well as writing the script for a tiny film called Raiders of the Lost Ark. Kinberg has also written some top notch films as well including: Sherlock Holmes, X-Men: First Class and the upcoming sequel X-Men: Days of Future’s Past.

Let the Matthew Vaughn speculation begin anew with Kinberg being involved with second and third movies. Having the First Class scribe is only going to give that rumor more traction that the director may take over duties on at least one of the flicks.

While Kasdan and Kinberg are now officially involved their exact roles are not known. It seems like they both will be producing Episodes VIII and IX and may either work on the scripts together or split the movies between the two of them.

This delights me to no end that Disney could get Kasdan to come back and be involved in such a big way with this new trilogy. Now if we could just get past that whole wanting to bring back Darth Vader thing I think all would be well.

  • Star Wars Episodes 2 & 3 3D Release Dates.

There was a bit of a surprise at the end of of Star Wars Celebration VI this weekend when the release dates for both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith 3D  were announced and the wait between the two films will be much less than the year apart Lucas and company had initially announced.

Star Wars Episode 2 3D will release on September 20th, 2013 which is a little over a year and a half after Episode 1 was released this past February but they are making up for the extra wait by releasing Episode 3 on October 11, 2013, a mere three weeks later.

Now I didn’t go see Episode 1 in theaters and for good reasons which any self respecting person should know but in my opinion the prequels did get progressively better so I will most likely be attending Attack of the Clones and definitely seeing Revenge of the Sith.

Side note: Has anyone thought how differently the Star Wars movies would be thought of if there was no prequel trilogy, just Episode 3 which I consider a good movie.
