  • Robert Downey, Jr. Signs For Cap 3. Civil War Coming To Marvel Movies

    robert-downey-jr--in-iron-man-2-109269

Robert Downey, Jr. was teasing a big Marvel announcement last week during his press tour for The Judge and he was not joking. RDJ is finalizing a deal to be in Captain America 3 that will kick off the Civil War storyline in Marvel movies.

Civil War was Marvel’s big event in 2006 that saw Iron Man and Captain America at odds over the Superhero Registration Act that made vigilantes register their real identities with the US government and act under regulations. Looks like we will get more tension between the heroes that we saw in the first Avengers.

Downey’s role was going to be a small part in Cap 3, but the star convinced Marvel for a bigger part which comes with a bigger paycheck. He will make $40 million for his appearance along with percentage of gross if Cap 3 does better than The Winter Soldier at the box office.

As many know, the Civil War storyline ended with the death of Captain America at the hands of a brainwashed Sharon Carter and Crossbones (whose character, Brock Rumlow was introduced in The Winter Soldier). With Chris Evans’ contract ending after Avengers 3 you wonder if the movies will mirror the comics.

Marvel’s plan is for Civil War to have effects all the way to Avengers 4 that will have Tony Stark creating a new team with Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and other heroes. So while we may not be getting Iron Man 4, we will definitely be getting plenty of Iron Man in other places.

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, yada yada yada. You know how it goes.

While Spidey did not beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s take last month, it brought in $92 million which is $30 million more than the reboot grossed in its opening weekend two years ago. Sony should feel confident about their future plans with Spider-Man and his expanded universe. In three weeks the film has grossed $369 million worldwide.

Attendance remained high at theaters over Easter weekend with Greg Kinnear finally figuring out a way to have a hit movie again.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was #1 for the third week in a row with $26.2 million. Marvel’s latest crossed $200 million domestically in three weeks as well as half a billion worldwide. It will pass Thor: The Dark World’s total domestic gross this week.

Rio 2 stayed strong in second with $22.7 million. The race for second was closer than expected with Heaven is for Real opening up to a strong $22.2 million, taking advantage of the Easter weekend. This left Transcendence to pick up the scraps. The newest from Johnny Depp opened with only $11 million. After last year’s The Lone Ranger and Transcendence, Depp needs a Pirates movie…quick.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will keep Marvel’s hot streak going. It grossed $47 million in 14 countries which is 30% above what Captain America: The Winter Soldier grossed in the same territories.

    1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier- $26.2 million/ $201.0 million

    2. Rio 2- $22.7/ $75.6

    3. Heaven is for Real- $22.2/ $22.2

    4. Transcendence- $11.0/ $11.0

    8. Oculus- $5.2/ $21.2

    9. God’s Not Dead- $4.8/ $48.3

    10. Noah- $4.8/ $93.3

Even with some competition from Rio 2, Captain America still came out on top.

After setting a new April record with $95 million last weekend, Cap followed up with $41.3 million. The latest Marvel hit is currently sitting on $476 million worldwide since its release a few weeks ago. It will pass half a billion after next weekend. There appears to be no stopping Marvel.

Rio 2 opened in second with $39 million which is nothing to scoff at. It is on par with the original in 2011. Oculus, the genuinely scary looking horror movie opened in third with $12 million. Not bad with the movie’s budget being $5 million.

    1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier- $41.3 million/ $159 million

    2. Rio 2- $39.0/ $39.0

    3. Oculus- $12.0/ $12.0

    4. Draft Day- $9.7/ $9.7

I think it is safe to say that Captain America has taken his place behind Iron Man as Marvel’s number two hero. Captain America: The Winter Soldier easily set a new April record with $96.2 million which is $11 million more than Thor: The Dark World opened to last November. The more impressive feat is the $207 million it has earned internationally giving Cap a $303 million gross after only ten days. That is almost half of Thor: The Dark World’s total gross in a week and a half.

The rest of the top ten suffered heavily with Marvel fever on everyone’s minds.

    1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier- $96.2 million/ $96.2 million

    2. Noah- $17.0/ $72.3

    3. Divergent- $13.0/ $114.0

    4. God’s Not Dead- $7.7/ $32.5

    5. The Grand Budapest Hotel- $6.3/ $33.3

    6. Muppets Most Wanted- $6.2/ $42.1

    7. Mr. Peabody & Sherman- $5.3/ $102.2

    8. Sabotage- $1.9/ $8.7

So far, so good for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah. The biblical (but not biblical) epic took in $44 million to finish first. I am sure the audience was divided between Christians who didn’t know what they were getting into and Aronofsky fans that wanted to see how he could top Jared Leto shooting heroin into a gaping hole in his arm.

With Captain America opening next week, we will see if Noah can stay afloat. Sorry, I had a one pun limit for this article.

Frozen had a big weekend. It became the highest grossing animated film of all time passing Toy Story 3. Maybe now people can finally let it go.

    Damn, two puns.

    1. Noah- $44 million/ $44 million

    2. Divergent- $26.5/ $95.2

    3. Muppets Most Wanted- $11.3/ $33.3

    4. Mr. Peabody & Sherman- $9.5/ $94.9

    5. God’s Not Dead- $9.0/ $22.0

    6. The Grand Budapest Hotel- $8.8/ $24.4

    7. Sabotage- $5.3/ $5.3

    8. Need For Speed- $4.3/ $37.7

    9. 300: Rise of an Empire- $4.3/ $101.1

    10. Non-Stop- $4.0/ $85.1

    x-men-days-of-future-past-poster

    Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Here is the cast of the second Cap movie opening fire on the movie that will open against Cap 3, Batman vs. Superman. Be careful what you wish for.

    Wolverine

David James Kelly will write the next Wolverine movie that see James Mangold return to direct and Hugh Jackman as Logan again. I will say again I think this will be Jackman’s last time playing the character. It will release on March 3, 2017.

    Music

    Gwar

Lead singer, Dave Brockie, has died. He was 50 years old. Gwar just turned 30 and we just want to say R.I.P. to Oderus Urungus.

    TV

    American Horror Story

The fourth season of the show will be titled American Horror Story: Freak Show confirming that it will indeed have a circus theme. If you thought Precious having sex with a minotaur was weird, you haven’t seen anything yet.

    Video Games

    Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes

Wanna spend five minutes seeing if you can spot the differences in the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game? Have at it.

    Dragon Age: Inquisition

Here are the quick hits from the world of movies, TV, games, K-Mart locations, laserdisc collections, whatever catches our fancy.

    Movies

    Avengers: Age of Ultron

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says we can look forward to Hawkeye and Hulk having larger roles in the sequel. This pleases me.

“Part of the fun of Age of Ultron was saying, you’ve seen another Iron Man adventure before, you see another Thor adventure and another Cap adventure, but we haven’t seen the Green Goliath again. So that was important in the characters you haven’t seen – Hulk being one of them and Hawkeye being one of them – Ultron will make up for it. They have very big parts in Age of Ultron.”

    Pan

In the long, successful tradition of actors playing characters of different ethnicity, like Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger or Al Jolson in The Jazz Singer, Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) has been cast as Tiger Lily in 2015’s Pan. This movie sounds like a scene out of Dragon Tattoo…very uncomfortable to sit through.

    Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Sebastian Stan has revealed that he has a nine picture deal with Marvel Studios. Get ready for Winter Soldier to be around for a long time.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger

Watching Arnold crush things with a tank is somehow deeply satisfying. He is doing it for charity as well, so no shame in helping out.

    Games

    Titanfall

Amazon raised Prime prices this week and now they have been caught deleting low scores for Titanfall by NeoGAF. Ruh Roh, Shaggy.

    Valve

Check out the redesigned Steam controller which still looks weird as hell, but now with A,B,X and Y buttons.

    271963-h1

    Street Fighter

Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, an original web series, will debut on Machinima. It can’t be any worse than the last two movies…can it? At least the video has no Van Damme or Kristin Kreuk although it looks like the grand master is wearing one hell of an anal bead necklace.

    Books

    Harry Potter

JK Rowling has released a new 2,400 word piece called History of the Quidditch World Cup. It is free and can be read on Pottermore.

  • Captain America 3 To Open Against Batman Vs. Superman

When it was announced that Batman vs. Superman had been delayed to May 6, 2016 we knew that was a date that Marvel had already staked out for an unknown film. Through the power of the internet we now know that it will be Captain America who gets to honor to take on DC’s two mightiest heroes.

While superhero battles are great in the comics, it sucks for movie fans. Now, your uber-fans are going to see both in the same weekend, but with theater trips costing your first-born son these days, there will have to be a choice made for most. I hope that one studio backs off and changes dates because both of these movies are large enough that they need to have their own weekend in the spotlight.

If I had to play the guessing game as to who would flinch first, it would be Marvel. Captain America is a big property, of this there is no doubt, yet, he is not on the same level as Iron Man or Avengers (at least in the Marvel cinematic universe).

If these two movies do open against each other I would have to give the edge to Batman and Superman. This will be the third Cap film up against the two biggest comic characters in history. Even with all the bitching about Batfleck (even though I think he will own it), there will be a curiosity by moviegoers to see how the first movie team-up goes with the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight.

If both movies open on the same weekend which one will you be seeing first?
