  • Hollywood In 2015: Something’s Gotta Give

    tumblr_mayqbd9DTy1qg9cujo1_500

We are all used to big summer movie seasons. It is a part of movie culture and it is one of the few reasons to actually get excited about sweating your balls (or other various parts) off in the baking sun. But is Hollywood headed for a year of heartbreak? Two years from now will be the biggest movie year in history. Not just summer, but for 365 days we will be given a deluge of big-budget extravaganzas like we have never seen before in such a short period.

This would indicate that Hollywood should reach their highest box office total ever, but with so many huge event and franchise movies in such a short time will we get burned out? Chances are that a few of these offerings will either not meet lofty expectations or completely bomb altogether just because of the competition releasing so close together.

So now, let’s look in our crystal ball (which oddly looks like a box of Gobstoppers) and see what franchises are sure things and which ones may be left out to wither and die.

Note: These movies are for the entire calendar year of 2015, not just the summer season.

    Avengers: Age of Ultron

As close as you will get to a sure thing to make a billion dollars. Even if the story ends up being weaker than the first, people will show up in droves.

Completely off the radar until last week’s Comic-Con. Zack Snyder returning to direct and Christopher Nolan executive producing. Just don’t screw up the Batman casting and watch the money flow in.

    Star-Wars

    Star Wars: Episode VII

Disney is going to run this franchise into the ground with yearly movies, but this first one by J.J. Abrams should be a massive hit and hopefully set up a new trilogy well.

    Independence Day 2

It will be 19 years between the original and the sequel when this hits. No Will Smith may hurt, but Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are returning and if they can cast some good new leads this could work. Will people still care after so long?

The fourth dino adventure will return to the original island. Jurassic Park 3 made its money back but failed to live up to the first two. Depending on release date, this may get lost in the shuffle.

The first two FF movies made plenty of money against their budgets, but were bashed by critics. Better casting and and early spring release should help the new team reach better heights.

On Stranger Tides was the first Pirates to not break $300 million domestically yet it was a huge hit worldwide being the first one in the franchise to cross $1 billion. Even if some are tired of Jack Sparrow, the rest of the world box office will make him a hit again.

Pixar has had a case of sequel-itis for a few years now and I have still not gotten my Incredibles 2. Finding Nemo is one of the most beloved of all the Pixar offerings so I think people will embrace this more than Cars 2 or even Monsters University.

The problem comes in convincing the general public to take the trip to Azeroth.

  • Has The Title To Batman/Superman Been Revealed?

    29878-alex-ross-superman-and-batman-superman-images-gallery_1440x900

Warner Bros. blew away everyone at Comic-Con with their announcement of a Batman/Superman movie in 2015 and now David S. Goyer, the writer for Man of Steel and its huge follow-up, may have given the title to the movie. Speaking at the Superman 75th anniversary panel at Comic-Con, Goyer had this to say:

“So over in Hall H at the Warner Bros.–I guess most people know now–at the end of the Warner Bros. panel, Zack came out and he brought Henry Lennix, who plays General Swanwick in Man of Steel and we–actually, Henry read a bit from [The Dark Knight Returns] and so the next film we’re making, we’re already in pre-production, comes out in summer of 2015 and it’s–we’re actually not sure whether the title is Superman vs.Batman or Batman vs. Superman but yes, it’s–that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and that’s happening.”

Maybe it is the purest in me, but I am still wanting it to be called World’s Finest, but any title they give it is fine because they are giving me this movie.

  • Batman/Superman Movie Official For 2015!!!

    worlds-finest_comic-art_topslice

Marvel’s Comic-Con panel isn’t until tonight, but Warner Bros. may have just won Comic-Con with their HUGE announcement today.

Their two greatest heroes, Batman and Superman, will be heading to the big screen together in the summer of 2015. Zack Snyder will return to direct with a script by Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer. Christopher Nolan will serve as executive producer and presumably head up the entire project. Henry Cavill will return as Superman and a search will begin for a new Batman.

Snyder surprised everyone by showing up at the Comic-Con panel and had an excerpt from The Dark Knight Returns read and the Superman logo was shown on screen then a new Batman logo appeared behind it.

    NERD FEELS….EVERYWHERE!!

On the heels of this big event, it is also being rumored that Warner is prepping a Flash movie for 2016 which will lead into a 2017 Justice League film.

Here is the official statement from Warner Bros. on the massive team-up of the two biggest superheroes in the world:

On the heels of the worldwide success of Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time —Batman and Superman —for the first time on the big screen.  The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution,Warner Bros. Pictures.

The current hit, Man of Steel, has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing.  Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcoming film brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.  The new Batman has yet to be cast.

Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay.  Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date in Summer 2015.”

    About The Films

    Batman Begins (2005)

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight’s emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents’ murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

    The Dark Knight (2008)

The follow-up to Batman BeginsThe Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Oldman, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

    Dark Knight Rises (2012)

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane. Christian Bale stars, along with Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman.

  • More Batman??? Yep! Here Is The Arkham Origins Trailer

If you are not a fan of Batman, then today is not the day to be here.

WB Games has released the first trailer for Batman: Arkham Origins and while it shows no gameplay, it is over four minutes of Batman and Deathstroke beating the holy hell out of each other. Throw in an appearance by Deadshot and Black Mask pulling a Manhunt on someone and my interest is piqued. Let’s just hope WB Montreal can get the gameplay to match the flow of Rocksteady’s first two entries.

Batman: Arkham Origins releases on October 25th.

  • Batman: Arkham Origins Voice Cast Is Confusing Me!

So here’s the deal. Yesterday we posted a story saying that Kevin Conroy would be returning to voice Batman in the upcoming Arkham Origins game after weeks of WB Games saying they were getting a new actor for the role.

Read it here, I will give you a second.

Good? OK, well scratch that….or not. Hell I don’t know anymore!

WB Games announced today that Batman would be voiced by Roger Craig Smith, who voiced Ezio in Assassin’s Creed and Chris Redfield in Resident Evil. Sooo where does this Kevin Conroy saying he will be Batman? Hell if I know. Maybe the game will be told in flashback…or something?

One awesome bit of news though was that Troy Baker would be voicing The Joker. I know, I know, it’s not Mark Hamill, but Hamill appears to be sticking to his guns saying he is done with the character. Troy Baker voiced Booker DeWitt in [amazon_link id=”B003O6E6NE” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Bioshock Infinite[/amazon_link], Joel in [amazon_link id=”B007CM0K86″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Last of Us[/amazon_link] and also Robin and Two-Face in [amazon_link id=”B002I0F5M8″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Batman: Arkham City[/amazon_link], so he definitely has the chops to pull this off.

    [amazon_link id=”B00C7103DO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Batman: Arkham Origins[/amazon_link] releases on October 25th.

  • Rejoice! Kevin Conroy IS Voicing Batman In Arkham Origins

    batman-arkham-origins-screencap_960_0_cinema_640_0

    Good news everyone!

Kevin Conroy confirmed at the Dallas Comic-Con that he will indeed be returning as the voice of The Dark Knight in this fall’s Batman: Arkham Origins. Conroy said the reason for the delay was that he had been under a NDA (non-disclosure agreement) and could not talk about his role in the project.

This is HUGE news for me. I was planning on getting Arkham Origins, but the fact Conroy was gone was already going to start the game in a hole for me. What can I say? I am a Conroy guy.

Batman: Arkham Origins releases on October 25th.

  • Batman: Arkham Origins Not Bringing Back Kevin Conroy?

Reports are swirling that veteran voice actor Kevin Conroy will not be brought in to do the voice of The Dark Knight in WB Montreal’s prequel [amazon_link id=”B00C7103DO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Batman: Arkham Origins[/amazon_link]. Conroy has been the voice of Batman for over 20 years beginning in 1992 with Batman: The Animated Series.

The studio’a reasoning from reports appears to be they want a younger sounding actor since the game takes place in the hero’s early days. Because Kevin Conroy is not a professional voice actor and could not attempt to do a younger voice I guess.

Sorry for the sour grapes. Conroy has been the voice of Batman for the better part of my lifetime and is the voice I imagine in my head when I read comics. Add to this the fact that Ubisoft is ditching Michael Ironside in favor of a generic sounding every man in the new Splinter Cell and it has not been a fun time.

WB Games has released a launch trailer for Injustice: Gods Among Us. It is not heavy on story (which is great by the way), but it is heavy on punches to the face, tombstones over people’s heads and truth lassos. Oh and Batman and Aquaman get most of the speaking time which is fine with me since Kevin Conroy is back doing Batman’s voice and Aquaman is the King of Atlantis and all. Not an Aquaman fan? You are missing out.

[amazon_link id=”B0088I7L76″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Injustice: Gods Among Us[/amazon_link] releases on April 16th, which is next week! So this is the perfect opportunity to check out our Five Reasons why you should buy Injustice.
