  • Review Roundup: Ryse: Son Of Rome

    Ryse_59169

The most talked about Xbox One title has had the wraps taken off of it. Ryse: Son of Rome has been talked about -mostly negatively- since its announcement at E3 this year. Can the reviews make believers out of the naysayers? Let’s just say there is rough sailing ahead.

    IGN– 6.8/10

“What’s there isn’t at all bad, it just feels like a foundation for something far greater and more nuanced that never comes. Enemy variety does a bit of work to liven things up. Some foes are unblockable, some charge you, and some assault you with a flurry of dual-sword attacks. Dealing with them requires you to care about your blocks, attacks, and movements, which is fun until you figure out their repetitive patterns.”

    Videogamer– 7/10

“From start to finish, Ryse is a constant joy to look at and ticks all the boxes in order to sell its tech: lush forests, awesome vistas, ancient Roman architecture. There’s not a single moment its engine and direction doesn’t impress in some fashion.”

    Gamespot– 4/10

“What initially seems like an impressive system based on precision and timing, largely thanks to some nice visual cues and elegant slow-motion animations, quickly becomes an exercise in mind-numbing tedium–and with just a sword and a shield attack on offer, it’s hardly surprising. Sure, there are blocks, dodges, and counters to help things along, but when you’re faced with opponents whose repetitive moves you’ll have seen in their entirety after the first hour of the game, it’s not long before you’ve experienced everything the combat system has to offer and figured out a sequence to repeat ad nauseam.”

    Kotaku– YES

“Some games show off graphics just to, well, show off. Rarely can you point to great graphics and say that they improve the gameplay, but in Ryse, they do. They help distinguish Ryse from being just another brawler. They excuse, to some extent, the game’s constricting linearity and invisible walls. They aid Ryse’s gameplay by supporting a melee combat system that works best if you, the player, visually “reads” your character’s movements.”

    Destructoid– 5/10

“But other than the lackluster campaign, there is one shining light of gameplay in Ryse — the two player co-op arena mode — which took me completely by surprise. This portion of the game is much more interesting due to the fact that it takes a page from many online shooters, adding in different objectives like “hold the point” or “assassinate specific targets” in addition to your typical “kill all these dudes” missions.”

    Game Informer– 6/10

“When I show my friends what Xbox One is capable of graphically, I’m going to pop in Ryse. The visuals are breathtaking, but the gameplay flips on a dime between being legitimately fun and downright bad. There is no middle ground. It’s very much the extreme of both.”

It seems like ever review is reading the exact same and since the scores go between 4 and 7 it looks like as long as you know what you are getting into you could have some fun. It all depends on if you like what Ryse is offering.

  • Channing Tatum Takes On Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Epic Split

    http://youtu.be/EMlpiey20b8

You knew it was only a matter of time before the Van Damme impersonators came out. I am just glad that it was Channing Tatum, who I may not like as a dramatic actor, but I’ll be damned if he isn’t a funny bastard. He made this video on the set of 22 Jump Street in an attempt to match Van Damme’s feat.

How does it compare to the original?

  • Vault-Tec Verified: Is The Survivor 2299 a Fallout 4 Tease?

    Fallout 4 Vault-Tec

Last week, the site http://thesurvivor2299.com/ made gaming news when after curious fans decoded the Morse code audio signal into a date: 12-22-13. This data has been further corroborated by a countdown timer that came up later in the week, which was of this writing still has just over 22 days, 18 hours left to go.

Further investigation revealed that the site’s code contains references to Fallout 4, the long-anticipated “true” follow-up to 2008’s Fallout 3, which won numerous Game of the Year awards. Over the course of today, more evidence has come to light regarding the domain registration, which bears the markers of being owned by ZeniMax Media. Finally, the Vault-Tec logo has appeared on the site under the timer.

The next entry in the franchise was Fallout: New Vegas, which most “vault dwellers” either loved or loathed for its changes in formula. That title’s biggest legacy is probably the controversy after news broke that development studio Obsidian Entertainment was denied bonuses and additional funding, which eventually led to layoffs and apparently affected the development of the game’s disappointing dlc. Apparently the game fell within tenths of a point short of the aggregate review scores – on sites such as Metacritic and GameRankings – that parent company ZeniMax had expected.

Bethesda Softworks, the developer responsible for Fallout 3, spent the intervening years working on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and its subsequent DLC; when the company announced that they were done with new content for that title, the general assumption was that their attention would turn to Fallout. In fact, earlier today sources confirmed that the studio has just filed for trademark of “Fallout 4” in Europe.

The last significant Fallout mention came in the form of a tweet from Erik Todd Dellums on January 8: “To all my #Fallout3 and #ThreeDog fans: There may be more of the Dog coming! Fingers crossed!” Three Dog was the radio host of Galaxy News Radio in Fallout 3, and remains a fan-favorite from the series.

As to the site’s authenticity, many of us were cruelly mislead this time last year by a fan-made site with similar implications to Prey 2. It’s worth mentioning that the trademark filing would be a stretch to call coincidence; Fallout 3 takes place in 2277, putting this in the correct time-frame; and finally “The Survivor” has the ring of the pseudonyms given to each numerical Fallout’s main character: the Vault Dweller, Chosen One, and Lone Wanderer, respectively.

Here’s everything the Fallout wiki The Vault has collected on the site: http://fallout.gamepedia.com/Blog:News/The_Survivor_2299.

  • 1 Million PS4’s Were Sold In First 24 Hours

Sony revealed over the weekend that the Playstation 4 sold 1 million consoles in North America in the first 24 hours of it going on sale. That is a great start for Sony’s next generation console that they are hoping to sell 5 million of by March 2014. Assuming Sony can keep stores replenished with PS4’s through the holidays they should have no problem meeting that mark by spring.

There are still some consoles that are having problems out there including HDMI ports that wont send signal to the TV (which is due to a bent prong inside the HDMI port) and some not booting up at all. Sony has been responding to complaints with ways to try and fix the console or sending it back to them for a replacement. Even if it is a very small number Sony does not need this hanging over them as the Xbox One launches this week.

We now get to see if the Xbox One can meet or surpass the sales numbers that the PS4 did last week. I know Microsoft is hoping for a smoother launch than their competitor.

  • The New Trailer For Need For Speed Wants To Go Fast

After the first trailer went a different path -to my delight- the second trailer for Need For Speed veers back on the Fast & Furious track. Revenge factor: check. Group of random racial profiles teaming up: check. Howard Stark being villainous and killing a friend: yep. Totally insane car stunt involving a helicopter: you know it. Aaron Paul’s voice proving he could be Batman if he wasn’t 5’7″: a gravely voiced yes.

Need For Speed releases March 14, 2014.

  • Review Roundup: Dead Rising 3

    2129459-169_deadrising3_cinematic_xone_ot_082013

Zombies all around you what are you going to do? Frank West is nowhere to be found so you won’t be taking pictures but new protagonist Nick Ramos is here to build all types of mechanical monstrosities to get through the apocalypse.

Dead Rising 3 is the Xbox One launch title that is getting the most hype so let’s take a look at how the early review are shaking down for the third trip to zombieland.

    IGN– 8.3/10

“Dead Rising 3 doesn’t get by on its looks, but its meaty zombie-slaying combat and nearly endless supply of undead and ridiculous weapons go a long way. Through its lengthy campaign, I was always eager to see what crazy zombie-squishing contraption would come along next. It rarely disappointed, except when navigating its snarled map and waiting out its load times took me out of the fight took too long.”

    Kotaku– YES

Dead Rising 3 makes it very easy to do awesome things—dress up like James Bond and ramp a motorcycle into a crowd of zombies, or loot the local police station for gear and ammo before unleashing hell on a gang of bikers. It made me grin so often that the crass and unfun bits stick out all the more. The game is so good at letting me make my own fun that I’m surprised it can be so lousy at making its own.”

    Game Informer– 8.75/10

“Capcom Vancouver’s latest entry in the Dead Rising saga is an impressive display of big, dumb fun, and a must-play for fans of the series. It’s also a great demonstration of the outstanding capabilities of next-gen hardware right out of the gate. Thinning out the undead of Los Perdidos is worth your time, but the bugs infesting the sandbox are an unwelcome scourge.”

    Videogamer– 8/10

“It’s as fundamentally silly as it was before, with most of the game’s systems having been designed for the sole purpose of Dicking Around™. The new combo mechanic enables players to create some outlandish weapons (oversize teddy bear + assault rifle = automated sentry gun) which are as much fun to use as they must have been to come up with. These items need to be crafted by first obtaining blueprints dotted around the city. They make for a great incentive to explore, and their sheer absurdity turns Los Perdidos (a stylised reimagining of LA) into a playground of death. You’ll be laughing for about 90% of the time you’re playing.”

    Polygon– 7.5/10

“Playing Dead Rising 3 can be a schizophrenic experience — I was angry at the game whenever it required   precision from me — precision that the controls just wouldn’t support. But I was thoroughly enjoying myself whenever it let   me run amok and get creative with weapons and vehicles. It’s a game with great ideas and intermittently poor execution.”

    Destructoid– 9/10

“But make no mistake — just because Dead Rising 3 is less out there doesn’t mean the core humor isn’t present — because it totally is. There’s still tons of crazy characters to meet, and the new Psychos (modeled after the seven deadly sins) are as colorful as ever, including Sloth, who is literally too lazy to get out of his chair to fight. The cast is a bit more well rounded this time around, as there’s a good mix of walking campy caricatures, and actual characters.”

  • Weekend Box Office- November 15-17, 2013

    loki-thor-2

Thor got more competition than was expected this weekend. The God of Thunder remained in first with $38.4 million and in two weeks has already passed the first film’s worldwide gross. The total now stands at $479 million.

The Best Man Holiday is a sequel to the 1999 film, The Best Man, and it played like it had only been a few years since its release and not fourteen. It nearly doubled its expected take bringing in $30.6 million. We can assume that there won’t be another long wait before another movie in the franchise is released.

Gravity kept is amazing run going crossing half a billion dollars worldwide.

This weekend will be huge with the release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which is looking to set records for November opening and how many times I can see a movie because Jennifer Lawrence is in a wetsuit.

    1. Thor: The Dark World- $38.4 million/ $149.9 million

    2. The Best Man Holiday- $30.6/ $30.6

    3. Last Vegas- $8.8/ $46.9

    4. Free Birds- $8.3/ $42.2

    5. Bad Grandpa- $7.6/ $90.2

    6. Gravity- $6.2/ $240.5

    7. Ender’s Game- $6.2/ $53.7

    8. 12 Years a Slave- $4.7/ $24.9

    9. Captain Phillips- $4.5/ $97.6

    10. About Time- $3.6/ $11.5

  • Infamous: Second Son Release Date Announced

While you are out today picking up your PS4 you might want to go ahead and put Infamous: Second Son on pre-order. Sucker Punch has revealed that the Playstation 4 exclusive will be releasing on March 21, 2014.

This will be the third title in the Infamous series and the first not starring Cole for reasons that are obvious if you played through Infamous 2. The new protagonist is Delsin Rowe, who is being played by Troy Baker both in voice and look using motion capture.

A PS4 bundle was announced that will come with the game and the console. No release date was given but one would assume it will be day and date with the game. Two collector’s editions will also be available which you can see below.
