  • We Have A New Fantastic Four

Director Josh Trank has finalized his Fantastic Four casting with Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/Thing and Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/Human Torch.

Jordan has been associated with the Johnny Storm role ever since the project was announced. He has worked with Trank before on 2012’s Chronicle.

Mara is best known recently from House of Cards where being invisible would have really helped her in the new season.

Whenever I see Teller I always associate him as the asshole friend in Project X and he played the asshole with so much gusto I am sure he can handle this. He has starred with Jordan in That Awkward Moment and has a role in Divergent.

Bell has been in movies like Jumper, The Adventures of Tintin and Defiance. Also, remember 2000’s Billy Elliott? That’s him. Now he is going to be a giant man made of rock. Maybe he will give us an outtake of him dancing in costume.

The movie will be based on Marvel’s Ultimate Fantastic Four by Mark Millar and Brian Michael Bendis. Good start.

The Fantastic Four releases on June 19, 2015.

  • Kraft Mac & Cheese Bridges The Age Gap With The Return Of “Ninja Rap”

    http://youtu.be/_-lT1oOU7b4

The year was 1991. An 11 year old boy sits in his room listening to his cassette copy of Vanilla Ice’s “Ninja Rap” for hours on end after seeing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle II: The Secret of the Ooze in theaters just a week before. Life was good.

Whoever is the marketing genius at Kraft that created this gem surely experienced the same thing as a kid and now has combined the old and new TMNT in one giant Rob Van Winkle explosion.

Now I want some damn macaroni.

  • The First Guardians Of The Galaxy Trailer Is Here!

    http://youtu.be/pTZ2Tp9yXyM

Marvel finally took the wraps off of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy with the first official trailer that premiered on The Jimmy Kimmel Show.

We get introduced to the entire team which include Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).

The feel of the trailer is like no other Marvel movie and I mean that in the best way possible. It is amazing watching Chris Pratt for so long on Parks and Rec then seeing him like this, but he fits the role so well with the snarky attitude.

Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel’s biggest gamble yet. If you are unaware of the comic, did this trailer give you a reason to be excited? If not, don’t worry. There is still plenty of time to change that.

Guardians of the Galaxy releases on August 1st.

  • Pete Holmes Hits Ryu With The Legal Business

The Pete Holmes Show returns with new episodes on February 24th and he is taking on a different set of opponents this season. Last year he played Professor X and took all of the X-Men to task about how horrible they really were. Now it looks like the world of video games is in his crosshairs.

First up is Ryu from Street Fighter, played by Zack Morris himself, Mark-Paul Gosselaar. We all know of Ryu’s famous saying when he uses his special attacks…save one; that damn hurricane kick. Pete tries to get to the bottom of that.

And with that, Cesaro swung his way into the lives of millions.

OK, truth be told, he has been using the swing for months and it is not even his most impressive one (see: Great Khali), but last night’s match with Cena was one of those star-making moments that you hope the WWE will take notice of.

    But we know they won’t.

Sure, Cesaro beat Orton on Smackdown last week and gave Cena what was his best Raw match in over a year but we all know where this is heading. After the Chamber PPV he will be on Raw simply to show off the big swing and have some useless feud with Jack Swagger down the road. Hell, I would be surprised if he was even on the WrestleMania card. That is how the company works. Superstars with natural talents are told not to use them because it doesn’t fit their character or what any one of the higher ups think should be in a match. If my memory serves, that was one of Punk’s original grievances when he was on his way out the door in 2011.

    cesaro-cena

    SHORYUKEN!!

Still, nobody can take anything away from Cesaro, or even Cena, who held his own in that damn fine match. That was the kind of power vs. power display that made you get up on Saturday mornings as a kid, sit down with your bowl of Peanut Butter Captain Crunch and watch wrestling…at least until He-Man came on. I would actually say to go and find it online and give it a watch if you missed it and be amazed at Cesaro’s strength. Seriously, its like he drinks a Red Balls before he goes out there.

    redballs

Daniel Bryan was given an out for losing at the PPV with his beatdown by Kane after he wrestled Christian, who is a heel now? I know the announcers were selling it as Christian being more aggressive because…wrestling, but he was in full-on 2011 “pissed at the world because he should be champ” mode. So there is that.

Word is that Christian is the latest superstar that is leaving once their contract is up so maybe he can have some fun as a heel before retiring. He is not happy about how he is being used and at the age of 40 he looks to just be going out to pasture when he leaves because God knows he would rather clamp his nuts in a hair iron than go back to TNA.

Roman Reigns took on Mark Henry and while I was not surprised he won, I was surprised that it was so quick. I am of the mind that I don’t want The Shield to go their separate ways (at least now) but I am having fun watching Ambrose slowly delve into madness over Reigns’ ascent. This is a rare situation where all three guys could be huge stars on their own.

BTW- how over is Reigns’ Superman punch and spear?

    ambrose

I won’t be watching the Elimination Chamber PPV this Sunday (at least to my knowledge) because it really is a weak card with the exception of The Shield vs. The Wyatts six-man tag. That, I would pay money to see, but not 50 bucks. I wish WWE would have thrown us a bone and had the PPV be free on WWE Network. But alas, they want one more big PPV payday before telling DirecTV and all the others to go f*** themselves.

I am still a little confused by the booking heading into Sunday with The Wyatts not absolutely squashing Team Mexico. For a team that captivates the audience and will, most likely, win on Sunday, the artists formerly known as Epico & Primo and Hunico Cara got way too much offense.

Raw was working with reverse momentum last night. The show started hot with all six chamber members then stayed up for Daniel Bryan through the Cena/Cesaro match then it was like someone let out a fart in an elevator. Maybe it was the after-effects of an actual great match on Raw and we didn’t know how to react?

It ended with Randy Orton vs. Sheamus and these two do not have the best luck with Raw matches since fans like to chant for Daniel Bryan during their previous two encounters. They didn’t have to worry about that here. They had CM Punk chants. Can’t make this stuff up. Luckily the show ended in a brawl and got the crowd on their feet.

Who can tell me whose brilliant idea it was to take the tag titles off of The Rhodes Brothers and make them sit at a kids table and sell WWE LEGO’s?? For Christ’s sake. Did I laugh? Yeah, because Goldust lends himself well to that kind of skit, but Jesus H., this was the team that beat The Shield for the belts and held them for months and were continually the best thing about Raw tag matches. I understand that The Usos are next in line to hold the user created belts with Spartan heads on them from WWE 12, but it would not have been a bad thing to have a face vs. face match. I would have loved to see The Rhodes and The Usos. Now, we get to see the VKM do their best to keep up with the superkick brothers.

    1251192172_american_history_x

Here is the card for the Elimination Chamber PPV on Sunday:

-Elimination Chamber for the WWE World Heavyweight Title (Cena/Orton/Bryan/Sheamus/Cesaro/Christian)

    -The Wyatts vs. The Shield

-The Usos vs. New Age Outlaws for the Tag Team Titles

    -Batista vs. Alberto Del Rio

-Big E. vs. Jack Swagger for the Intercontinental Title

-Darren Young vs. Titus O’Neil (yes this is on the PPV)

For those wondering The Rhodes Brothers are on the pre-show against Rybaxel. Yet, Titus O’Neil has a PPV match. Reminds me of the time I spent $45 for WCW Sin and had to watch…WCW Sin.

Next week is the big WWE Network kick-off Raw which will be free and should have a whole lot more going on than the PPV on Sunday. Lesnar will be back and the rumors are still strong that Taker and Hogan will be returning. With any luck we should start the full-on push to WrestleMania, and even if Raw sucks, we can all get on the WWE Network after and watch any old ECW PPV we want.

    Till next week!

  • Review: Robocop (2014)

    untitled

The 1987 original Robocop is considered an action classic and I wholly agree. Director Paul Verhoeven used the movie as a metaphor for the times. He took what was happening in the 80’s “decade of excess” and pushed that idea forward in the not too distant future to see where society could possibly be headed. It also had his signature flare for the gory with the most liberal use of squirting blood packs ever seen to a boy of eight years old.

Somehow my mind made it through. I did not say it made it through undamaged.

Going into the remake, I was a bit torn. On the one hand, there was no possible way it could surpass the original and yet on the other hand, the movie had put together a damn good cast led by The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Jay Baruschel.

If you have seen the original, the premise is still the same; Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer, is injured and the only viable option for him to continue living is to put him inside a machine created by Omnicorp (OCP) to patrol the streets but is ultimately used as a marketing tool.

    robocop2014-6

The why’s and how’s of Robocop have changed. Murphy is injured in a car explosion by dirty cops and gun dealers instead of Kurtwood Smith and Co. gruesomely destroying his body with a shower of 12-gauge shells. Don’t freak out, the effect is still the same. For a PG-13 movie the violence is heavy at times but it can never match the levels of the 1987 version and there is a good reason for that.

Director Jose Padilha decided to take the majority of the runtime to discuss the issues that arise when a man is made to be more machine than flesh and blood. Where in the original, Murphy’s journey to robot cop is shown through a quick series of first-person shots of doctors and scientists working on him, this version takes almost 30 minutes to go in-depth showing Murphy’s first awakening as well as dealing mentally with the horrors that have happened to him.

Once Robocop hits the streets you are in the middle of an ethical argument between the head of Omnicorp, Raymond Sellers, and Congress who have enacted a law to ban the use of robots on the streets. He uses the creation of Robocop to circumvent the law and sway the American people to get the law repealed. As Murphy begins to go off the grid by wanting to see his family and search for his killers, OCP begins to take away more and more of the man and give control to the machine.

    robocop-2014-103657

For those of you worried that the political and social satire would be lost in a story much more emotional than its source material; have no fear. Instead of interspersed news bits, car advertisements and TV programs that echoed the world in the 80’s, we get The Novak Element, hosted by Pat Novak (Samuel L. Jackson), that uses the media to push the pro-OCP agenda and preys on America’s fears in the vein of The O’Reilly Factor, Sean Hannity and other talking heads. This was a good way of transferring the parody inside Verhoeven’s original to something that will connect with this time.

There were elements of the remake that did not connect including Murphy’s partner who retains the name of Lewis, but retains none of the qualities that made Nancy Allen so memorable. He seems like he was put there for the joke about Murphy’s armor being black and that’s it. Abby Cornish tries her best as Murphy’s wife but can come across as stiff especially when you have Joel Kinnaman knocking his performance out of the park. Jackie Earle Haley and Gary Oldman chew up all their scenery well and Michale Keaton is not too shabby as the head of Ominicorp but can never come close to being as big an asshole as Dick Jones.

    Joel Kinnaman;Gary Oldman

At the end of all of this, the question still remains; is the 2014 version of Robocop better than the original?

    No.

But that is not a surprise. The surprising thing is that this Robocop is a well-paced action movie with more of a human element than the 1987 version ever thought about having. While it may be a remake, it can also be held on its own as a study of just because we can do something, does that mean we should? As we rely on technology more and more, is this the next step in our relationship with it? Definitely more heavy elements than I was expecting from a movie called Robocop.

I’d buy that for a dollar.

  • Weekend Box Office- February 14-16, 2014

    the-lego-movie-636-380

The wonders of LEGO easily held onto the top spot over a host of new releases. The LEGO Movie grossed $48.8 million, a drop of only 29%. It has brought in $129.1 million in two weeks domestically, holding strong on weekdays as well.

Kevin Hart is riding a wave of popularity and his new movie, About Last Night, took advantage of the Valentine’s weekend with a $27 million take. It is his second hit of the year after Ride Along, which is still holding in the top ten.

Robocop settled for third with $21.5 million. It opened last Wednesday and has grossed $26.4 million. Not a strong start for the movie with a budget of $100 million. The good news for the remake is that it has made almost $70 million internationally. It has made its budget back in two weeks of worldwide release so Robocop can hardly be called a flop.

    1. The LEGO Movie- $48.8 million/ $129.1 million

    2. About Last Night- $27.0/ $27.0

    3. Robocop- $21.5/ $26.4

    4. The Monuments Men- $15.0/ $43.6

  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars Coming To Netflix

    star-wars-clone-wars-canceled-after-five-seasons-detours-put-on-indefinite-hold

Good news for Star Wars fans (like me) who never got to watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars in its entirety. The series’ five seasons including the unaired sixth season with the final 13 episodes will be available to stream on Netflix beginning March 7th.

For me, this is great because I watched most of the first season but lost track and fell too far behind. Hooray for Netflix! Now I can marathon the show and feel like a Star Wars fan again.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars was not allowed to finish out its run on Cartoon Network due to Disney’s purchase of LucasFilm. A new animated show, Star Wars Rebels, will debut on Disney XD at a later date.

  • Donal Logue Cast As Harvey Bullock In Gotham

    Donal-Logue-as-Harvey-Dent-in-Gotham

OK Gotham, we get it. You are great at casting. Now you are just showing off.

Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy, Terriers) has been cast as Detective Harvey Bullock in Fox’s Gotham. This is another win for the show that hasn’t even started production yet. It has generated a lot of good buzz over the past week with Ben McKenzie playing Jim Gordon as well as the casting of Alfred and Oswald Cobblepot.

Gotham will premiere on Fox this fall.
