  • WWE To Launch Xbox App To Watch Wrestlemania 29

The WWE is continuing their slow crawl into every avenue of digital media with the release of a WWE app for Xbox 360. Fans will be able to watch this Sunday’s Wrestlemania 29 and every monthly PPV after on the app from your Xbox 360. You will still pay the normal PPV cost of the event, but it is an alternative for people who are without cable.

It is a shame that they are launching the app in front of what may be the weakest built Wrestlemania in years. It is a yearly event for me, but this year has gone so vanilla and by the books that it feels like we may be in for the weakest entry since 2000.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has found its second member. Chris Pratt was cast a few weeks back as Peter Quill, the Star-Lord and now ex-WWE wrestler Dave Bautista is going to play Drax the Destroyer. Drax is a human that was given another body with special powers to take revenge on Thanos. With the movie’s budget I can be pretty sure that they will not just paint him green like an Orion slave girl from Star Trek.

One interesting thought I just had. How rather odd would it be that Dave Bautista could see his star in Hollywood rise to the same level that The Rock has been working on for ten years after just one Marvel movie?

  • 2K Games WWE Deal Finalized, WWE 2K14 Coming This Fall

WWE officially has a new home for video games. Take Two and the sports entertainment company finalized a new five year deal that will see 2K Sports take over the license beginning with the re-branded WWE 2K14.

The Japanese developer Yuke’s will still be handling duties on the game as they did with THQ which, to me, was the most important part of this deal. They have learned over the years and crafted an engine that works with the WWE style and to give this over to a new developer could have given us a great game, but more likely would have produced something….well bad. Yuke’s is coming off what I believe to be their best WWE game yet, WWE 13.

WWE 2K14 is still set for a fall release.

  • Has Take Two Snatched Up The WWE License?

    d64e508a6f936b44463cd49e399dac03

In the wake of THQ’s auction which saw their properties and studios sold off, one glaring party left out was the WWE name. Some have said that EA was in the market to pick up the sports entertainment brand but they have denied those rumors because we know how EA doesn’t like to buy franchises and ruin them.

Now it seems that Take Two, the parent company of 2K, has stepped up to the plate and purchased the rights to Vince McMahon’s multi-million dollar name in games. It is sad to see the THQ era of wrestling games come to an end, especially with WWE 13 being such a great game last year. At least the team at Yuke’s and THQ went out with the best WWE game ever. Now we get to look forward to the future.

    WWE 2K14 anyone?

  • THQ Officially No More, Assets Sold, Employees Laid Off

    THQLOGOBR

One of the saddest episodes in gaming is now done. THQ sold off their assets to other developers and publishers and anyone who did not work for one of the companies sold are being laid off. For the past year THQ has been limping along and filed for bankruptcy last month. A few weeks ago it was announced that an auction would be held to sell off THQ’s studios and intellectual properties. Here is the rundown of what we know so far.

    • Koch Media (Deep Silver) has purchased Volition, developers of the Saint’s Row franchise. They have also gotten the rights to the Metro franchise. Metro: Last Light was due for release this year.
    • Sega is getting Relic who developed Warhammer 40K and Company of Heroes.
    • Take Two has purchased Evolve, a codename project from Turtle Rock Studios.
    • Crytek purchaed the rights to the Homefront series.
    • Ubisoft will get the rights to South Park: The Stick of Truth and the THQ Montreal studio who are making the game 1666 from the creator of Assassin’s Creed.

Some properties like Darksiders (and studio Vigil) and the WWE franchise are still up in the air as of this writing. We will update as more is known.

Almost worth it for the artwork.

  • Review: WWE 13

Taking A Look Back Has Me Looking Forward To More.

    wwe13_crop_650x440

Almost every generation of video game consoles has had one definitive wrestling title. WWF No Mercy released on the Nintendo 64 is still widely regarded as the best wrestling game ever made. WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain on Playstation 2 brought the most complete package to that date of TV style presentation as well as an expanded control scheme that made almost anything possible and now on THQ’s seventh WWE game of the current generation they have made the definitive “must play” wrestling game.

Last year’s WWE 12 saw THQ completely scrap all the move animations that they had been collecting and using since 2007 and installed a new physics engine that they coined “Predator Technology”. Not only that but the team completely re-mapped the controls so that long time fans had a LOT to unlearn. It was a giant step in the right direction because you can tell that everything the developers learned last year has been brought over to this year’s game. The aptly named “Predator Technology 2.0” feels more smooth this year and with a host of new animations added to everything that was in last year’s version, makes WWE 13 feel as close to natural as you can probably get.

That is not to say there aren’t hiccups. Clipping and phasing through opponents and objects is still there but not near as rampant as it has been in past years. Honestly with everything the engine has to take into account including the different heights and weights of the wrestlers you can forgive a little bit of this. You will still have moments in matches where opponents won’t read steps being around them or how the top of the announce table doesn’t hit your grounded opponent but phase through them. It is a wrestling game. Belief should be suspended for some things.

    Bringing Attitude Back

    wwe_13_33

The biggest (and best) change this year is that the long running Road to Wrestlemania has been completely scrapped and in its place is the all new Attitude Era. What this does is takes you on a lengthy journey that celebrates the 15th anniversary of the Monday Night Wars and the beginnings of WWE’s Attitude Era.

I can not express enough how fun this is to play. Each section of Attitude Era is broken up into sections that involve the formation of DX, Stone Cold’s rise to the top of WWE, The Rock’s time as the Corporate Champ, Mick Foley’s championship dreams coming true and the road to Wrestlemania XV. Inside each section are between 7-12 matches and events that helped shaped the WWE’s win over WCW. For a lifelong wrestling fan I had so much fun playing through every bit of this. It brought me back and had me remembering specific nights when I could recall where I was and who I was with when I was watching the certain episode of RAW that the game had me playing. Even when you complete Wrestlemania XV you have an entirely new section available that includes random matches including Edge and Christian and the memorable Lita vs. Trish Stratus RAW main event. The nostalgia that was brought up is almost worth the price of the game.

Every match inside Attitude Era has a set criteria for completing the match. To get every unlockable open you will have to 100% not only just the match but the hidden objectives that pop up during the match. Don’t worry they are not overly difficult and for wrestling fans like myself you will be able to guess most of the hidden objectives just by your memory of the matches.

To help the Attitude Era seem like you are re-living those moments THQ has actually put in video packages that run in between sections and also has included the actual commentary from the WWE archives during matches. Not all of it is from the actual broadcast but the mix should not be recognizable to a lot of gamers. But if you are an old bum like me and remember things very vividly you will be able to spot the differences in the actual and newly recorded easily. One thing that is a bit annoying is that everytime during videos or commentary taken from the archives that someone says WWF the “F” is clipped out of the sound bite. I understand all the legal mumbo jumbo that goes into the WWE not being able to use it but it is a little distracting. This is not THQ’s fault and I really appreciate them putting the effort forward to include it.

    Creating A Virtual Smackdown

    wwe_13_49

User creation has always been one of the biggest part of any WWE game and this year’s does not disappoint. Create a wrestler is back and believe it or not it is even larger. A big plus is that a good majority of the moves added this year are very well done and makes you actually want to use them in the game. They didn’t just go through the sets and add in four different armbars and a new powerslam. Beyond the pre-set moves, create a finisher is just as fun as it was last year and now you have the ability to create your own signature maneuver as well.

Create an arena has been rebuilt this year to give you greater flexibility in crafting your vision. You can change every aspect of the ring as you could last year down to the design on the mats and rope color but the biggest change comes in how in depth you can get when you make your stages. Different arena sizes are available from high school gym all the way to Wrestlemania sized stadium shows. Alter your stages any way you want right down to what you want the runway ramp to say.

The championship editor is a good addition but it is not near as good as the belt creator was a few years ago. You can take any of the titles that appear in the game (which is quite sizable) and can alter the belt color and metal sheen of the championship and rename all the titles with a pre-set announcer name much like in create a superstar mode. It is good for a quick distraction but you won’t lose yourself in a wealth of options.

    Chairs With Friends

    WWE-13-Preview-Banner-e1345056420676

Online is a mixed bag again this year. During last year’s game I had numerous problems even getting in the community server to upload and download wrestlers. I can not tell you how many times I would get on and it would tell me that the community services were down and to try back later. This year, getting into the community servers is normally a quick affair with download times being pretty decent. Downloading created storylines remains a fun affair because there are just so many insane ones out there to see. Some are almost as weird as Edge and Booker T feuding over a shampoo commercial. The big minus comes in online matches. I don’t do these a lot but to get the complete game experience I have tried to wrestle a few matches and each time I am kicked out into the lobby or can not connect at all. This is with my signal being near perfect by the way. Hopefully it is just minor hiccup that will be fixed with a patch.

The roster in WWE 13 is MASSIVE. This year offers 84 superstars after you unlock everyone and that is before the three DLC packs that will be released by January. There are some omissions from last year that I miss and wish would stay in the games on a yearly basis (like Macho Man) but this is still easily the largest roster THQ has ever offered. In place of most of the legends that have been appearing in various iterations, we are given a host of Attitude Era stars that have not been seen in a video game since the Nintendo 64 days. The Godfather, Ken Shamrock, New Age Outlaws, Big Bossman, APA and even the three faces of Foley will have you reliving all your favorite moments from over a decade ago.

    wwe13-ss-04

THQ really has done a wonderful service for wrestling fans this year. For lifelong fans that long for better days (especially when you watch Monday nights now) this is the year to finally pick up a WWE game. Don’t mistake this for just another yearly update of a tired game. WWE 13 has improved on all the good steps taken last year in term of control and match options. By letting fans relive the major moments of the Attitude Era, WWE 13 reminds us of the best days that the world of sports entertainment ever saw, when the Monday night wars were raging and WWE was appointment television. It is easily the most fun and complete wrestling game of this generation.

    NERD RATING- 9/10

  • New Game Releases. October 30, 2012.

Assassin’s Creed and WWE Lead The Biggest Week Of The Year (So Far).

    [amazon_link id=”B0050SYLRK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Assassin’s Creed 3[/amazon_link] (360, PS3) $59.99

Besides Halo 4 this is arguably the biggest release of the year. Every bit of the game has wowed anyone that has seen it and the anticipation has been at a fever pitch for months. Finally moving out of the Ezio era and bringing the American Revolution to the forefront looks like it will really pay off for the franchise.

    [amazon_link id=”B0085L2T0A” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]WWE 13[/amazon_link] (360, PS3, Wii) $49.99-59.99

Last year’s game saw a complete change in the control scheme and physics engine so how do you possibly keep it fresh? By celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Attitude Era with its own storyline set as well as having Attitude Era stars on the roster. Don’t like your WWE programming PG? THQ may have the answer by looking to the past.

    [amazon_link id=”B0050SWTAQ” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Need For Speed: Most Wanted[/amazon_link] (360, PS3, PC, Vita) $39.99-59.99

My favorite racing series of all time is Burnout. So when it was announced that the guys at Criterion would be releasing the next Need For Speed game you can imagine my excitement. The real wonder of this release is how they managed to fit the entire game, as in every mode, into the Vita. Nice job Criterion.

    [amazon_link id=”B0088MVOUC” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Lego Lord of the Rings[/amazon_link] (360, PS3, Wii, PC, Vita, 3DS, DS) $29.99-49.99

Lego Batman 2 was released earlier this year to good reviews as well as being the first Lego game to feature voice acting. Now Lego Lord of the Rings is here and features actual dialogue from all three movies as well as Lego’s own unique humor mixed in. Co-op play are back as with any Lego game as well as tons of hidden goodies and unlockable characters.

    [amazon_link id=”B007BJNR6C” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation[/amazon_link] (Vita) $39.99

This Vita only adventure follows a new assassin, Aveline, as she tries to decipher a Templar plan in New Orleans during the years of the American Revolution. I still have to wonder why they would release the game on the same day as Assassin’s Creed 3. Most people won’t have the money for both and releasing apart from the main game may actually sell a few Vita’s. Sony….that is all.

Next week is a bit lighter on the releases with everyone getting out of the way of Master Chief’s return. That’s right, it’s finally time for Halo 4.

    Happy gaming!!!!

Ridley Scott’s Return To Sci-Fi Is Ready For Home Viewing.

    [amazon_link id=”B0085Z8F4A” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Prometheus[/amazon_link]

Ridley Scott’s “prequel” to Alien was perhaps the most polarizing movie of the summer. It came out to mixed reviews and the more people I talk to that have seen it were not that fond of it. I am in the minority though because I thoroughly enjoyed it despite plot holes which I am fairly certain every movie has. There is no denying it is a beautiful and well shot movie and this Alien fan welcomes it into the family.

    [amazon_link id=”B003UESJLK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]E.T. Anniversary Edition[/amazon_link]

The first movie I was ever taken to see. A timeless classic that holds a dear place in my heart. I am talking about the original theatrical version not the 2002 version which added CGI to E.T. and replaced the guns the government officials were holding with walkie talkies for a more politically correct look. But lucky for us they have included both versions in this set so at least we have a choice.

    [amazon_link id=”B005LAIHRC” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Rock of Ages[/amazon_link]

One of the biggest box office bombs of the summer. I can’t ever guess why except for maybe the bastardization of some of the greatest rock songs ever or just looking laughably bad. Your choice.

    [amazon_link id=”B008IG0E7M” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]CM Punk: Best In The World[/amazon_link]

One of the few reasons to watch WWE now is CM Punk. While all of wrestling seems to be stuck in a rut, Punk is one of the few constants that keeps me paying attention. This documentary follows Punk from his start in wrestling through his ROH days and his trek to the top of the WWE ladder. Early reviews are saying this is one of the best WWE produced videos ever made.

    [amazon_link id=”B005S9EJGO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Raven[/amazon_link]

The movie where John Cusack is Edgar Allan Poe and he and Zeus from Immortals try to catch a serial killer who is murdering people in ways described in the author’s famous works. I figured he finds the serial killer and draws him out by holding up a boombox outside his window and plays Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes”.
