Another week, another list of games to spend your hard earned money on. This week continues the “year of Luigi”, Madden is back for the 25th time and the Ninja Turtles are back raising shell. Also, Lost Planet 3 is apparently still a thing because it is coming out this week. I know, I am just as amazed as you.

  • Satoru Iwata Says The Wii U Needs Games, Not A Price Drop

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata continues to reiterate that the Wii U does not need a price drop to be successful against the upcoming next-gen consoles. In an interview with CVG, Iwata gave the reasoning of the premium bundle selling more than the basic that shows the price is not the Wii U’s main problem.

“The basic version should have sold a lot, but the fact of the matter is that people are buying more of the premium version. So the issue is not there. I understand that the real issue is the lack of software, and the only solution is to provide the mass-market with a number of quality software titles.”

The lack of titles is not the only problem with the Wii U. It is “a” problem, but not “the” problem. The Nintendo problem lies with the software deficiency, the marketing of the system (there are still people who believe the Wii U is a controller add-on for the Wii) and the $350 price tag which is getting harder to justify as we get closer to the PS4’s launch at only $50 more. Nintendo made all the right decisions when it came to turning around the fortunes of the 3DS, yet they seem to be stuck in a Nintendo 64 mindset when it comes to the [amazon_link id=”B009AGXH64″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wii U[/amazon_link].

  • Check Out The Wonderful 101 Nintendo Direct

After watching this 20-minute presentation of [amazon_link id=”B002I08CSW” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Wonderful 101[/amazon_link], I can once again say to Nintendo:

“PLEASE GIVE THE WII U A PRICE DROP! I WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME, BUT CAN STILL NOT JUSTIFY $350 FOR THE CONSOLE.”

This video goes very in depth into the core of the gameplay, like how you will save citizens and morph into the varied array of items like a giant fist, sword and whip. This is exactly the type of game that the Wii U needs to get people excited about the system. The only problem is that you need an exclusive game like this to come out every 1-2 months. With Pikmin 3 just coming out and The Wonderful 101 in September they are the first significant releases for the system in over 6 months.

The Wonderful 101 releases on September 15th.

All Wii U complaints aside, hot damn does this game look fun!

  • Rufus Hound Shows You The “Wii U Difference”. Does It Work?

    large

So everyone knows Nintendo is struggling and those struggles extend into the U.K. So how will Nintendo remedy this?

    Price drop?

    A 3DS-type ambassador program?

    Better bundle options?

Noooo silly rabbit. They will give you a new video with British comedian Rufus Hound explaining the “Wii U difference”.

The fact that the Wii U is now nine months old and Nintendo is having to run videos still explaining that it is a new console and not a Wii peripheral shows just one of the large problems in the marketing.

Plus, I prefer my Rufus Hound with a Hulk Hogan handlebar mustache.

  • How Bad Are Wii U Sales? You Might Want To Take A Seat.

Nintendo released system and game sales figures for the Wii U and 3DS and to put things bluntly, the 3DS seems to be keeping Nintendo afloat. The handheld sold over a million units this quarter and moved a staggering 11 million games.

Now onto the Wii U. This is gonna hurt.

The Wii U has sold a whopping 160,000 units…from April to the end of June…GLOBALLY.

To put this simply: that is bad.

To put it in internal Nintendo speak: Are we fu**ed? We may be fu**ed. Fu**.

Only 160,000 systems in a three month period in every territory you sell in is no laughing matter. Even the Wii managed to sell over 200,00 systems in the same period. Total sales of the Wii U are sitting at 3.6 million after almost seven months of release with two new consoles on the horizon and Nintendo showing no signs of giving the system a price drop.

This has got to change. The only reason the [amazon_link id=”B002I096AA” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]3DS[/amazon_link] took off after its horrific launch was the huge price cut the system received just months after its release. Nintendo noticed that people were not going to pony up $250 for the new handheld and slash its price by $80. If the [amazon_link id=”B009AGXH64″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wii U[/amazon_link] is to even survive to see another console cycle then this has to be step one in its rehabilitation.

  • Activision Bringing Six Games To Wii U This Fall

No one can blame Activision for contributing to the [amazon_link id=”B009AGXH64″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wii U[/amazon_link] game drought. They have just announced that six games will be making their way onto Nintendo’s struggling console this fall including Call of Duty: Ghosts.

    Here is the lineup:

    -Call of Duty: Ghosts

    -Angry Birds Star Wars

    -Angry Birds Trilogy

    -Skylanders Swap Force

    -Spongebob Squarepants: Plankton’s Robotic Revenge

    -Wipeout: Create & Crash

Really none of these are system sellers (since COD is on every system already) but it will at least give owners a few new things to think about getting, especially if you have kids.

Merry Christmas Johnny! It’s Spongebob and Call of Duty!

  • Mario Kart 8 Racing Home In 2014

As expected, Mario Kart is making its way to the Wii U, but the news that will bring a smile to your face is in the first video for the racer, when you see the vehicles can now drive on ceilings and walls and under streets F-Zero style. This makes for some insane looking races in the video and I can only imagine the fun that will ensue when you get four players involved in your home or more online.

I was hoping that Mario Kart 8 would not be more of the same and I am more than pleased to say it is not.

Mario Kart 8 releases in 2014 for the Wii U.

  • The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD Set For October Release

During the Nintendo Direct today, a new trailer for the HD remake of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was shown and there is no other way to say it…this game is freaking beautiful. Wind Waker was always the dark horse of the Zelda franchise (despite being the brightest…irony), but has grown to be loved in the ten years since its release. The Wii U version will come with a new feature called the Tingle Bottle. Despite sounding oddly dirty, the new feature will let Wii U messages randomly show up on the shore in players games so, like Sting, you can have a message in a bottle.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker releases this October for Wii U.

  • Super Smash Bros. Coming In 2014 For Wii U And 3DS

Get ready to beat the living hell out of your favorite childhood characters again. Nintendo revealed a 2014 release date for Super Smash Bros. on both 3DS and Wii U.

The usual suspects are all here. Mario, Link, Donkey Kong and will be joined by Mega Man and Villager from Animal Crossing. Past Brawl fighters have been as varied as Snake from Metal Gear and Sonic so there is no telling who else will be added to the fight list before release.

Check out the first trailer for the brawler below.

  • Will E3 Bring Cheaper Consoles?

Long time game analyst Michael Pachter believes that console prices will be dropping at next week’s E3. He says that with new consoles on their way this year Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft will be lowering their current generation systems by at least $30-$50.

Nintendo making the Wii $99 is just a sensible idea and as I said in my Nintendo E3 preview, they need to give the Wii U a drastic price cut.

Microsoft and Sony lowering their systems may not be as big a deal because they are bundling so much stuff with their systems that a price reduction would just ensure that a lot of bundling would stop. Instead of a $299 PS3 with a couple of games or a year of PS Plus, you may just get a $249 system and that’s all.

    E3 begins next week.
