  • Marvel Reveals Movie Lineup Including Captain Marvel, Black Panther And More

Marvel couldn’t let DC have all the press by announcing their movie lineup. Today, at a live event, they unveiled the titles and release dates of nine features. This includes the first official announcements of Black Panther and Inhumans.

Here are the official release dates with title shots after.

Captain America: Civil War – May 6th, 2016

    Doctor Strange– November 4th, 2016

    Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017

    Thor: Ragnarok – July 28th, 2017

    Black Panther – November 3rd, 2017

    Inhumans – November 2nd, 2018

Avengers: Infinity Wars Part 1 – May 2018

    Captain Marvel – July 6th, 2019

Avengers: Infinity Wars Part 2 – May 2019

There were a few casting notes during the announcement as well. Yesterday we found out that Benedict Cumberbatch would be their sorcerer supreme, Doctor Strange, and today they gave us more casting with Chadwick Boseman , from 42, playing Black Panther. If DC hit an infield fly with Ezra Miller as Flash, Marvel launched one 500 feet with that casting. See the first concept art of Black Panther below.

    So much to take in.

-We already knew Robert Downey, Jr. signed on for the third Cap movie with Civil War being the end result. The title should be no surprise.

-The casting of Cumberbatch is great for Marvel because it means he is locked in for more than one appearance, per normal Marvel contracts.

-Guardians of the Galaxy 2 moving to the May spot shows how much they believe in the franchise after it blew up this year, making over $700 million worldwide.

-The events of Civil War will affect Thor as well it seems with the Ragnarok title. Will Loki being on the throne lead to “the end of all things”?

-Black Panther is the one character that had the most internet support to have a movie from Marvel. With the Avengers team changing its look after Age of Ultron, it is a good possibility Panther will join.

-Vin Diesel had dropped hints that Marvel was going to release an Inhumans feature and that he might be involved. Seems like he wasn’t blowing smoke up our asses.

-Captain Marvel has me the most intrigued of all of these. This will be Marvel’s first female led movie and it will come a year after Wonder Woman. They have yet to trip up in casting, so let the rumors begin on who will play her.

-Avengers: Infinity War releasing only a year apart is huge. You have to think they will film it all as one due to the actor’s contracts for appearances. Thanos will be one tough cookie to take up two movies.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opened at #1. We knew it would. The only question was what kind of records it would set. How about the biggest November opening ever and the fourth biggest weekend take in history? That is what $161.1 million will get you. It trailed only The Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. For more perspective the second film in the franchise has almost equaled Thor: The Dark World’s three week take in one weekend.

The final Hunger Games Book, Mockingjay, will be split into two movies with the first opening November 21, 2014 and the second a year later in November 2015. Just consider it your new Thanksgiving tradition. Turkey, cranberry sauce and Jennifer Lawrence.

    1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire- $161.1 million/ $161.1 million

    2. Thor: The Dark World- $14.1/ $167.8

    3. The Best Man Holiday- $12.5/ $50.3

    4. Delivery Man- $8.2/ $8.2

    5. Free Birds- $5.3/ $48.5

    6. Last Vegas- $4.4/ $53.9

    7. Bad Grandpa- $3.4/ $95.4

    8. Gravity- $3.4/ $245.5

    loki-thor-2

Thor got more competition than was expected this weekend. The God of Thunder remained in first with $38.4 million and in two weeks has already passed the first film’s worldwide gross. The total now stands at $479 million.

The Best Man Holiday is a sequel to the 1999 film, The Best Man, and it played like it had only been a few years since its release and not fourteen. It nearly doubled its expected take bringing in $30.6 million. We can assume that there won’t be another long wait before another movie in the franchise is released.

Gravity kept is amazing run going crossing half a billion dollars worldwide.

This weekend will be huge with the release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which is looking to set records for November opening and how many times I can see a movie because Jennifer Lawrence is in a wetsuit.

    1. Thor: The Dark World- $38.4 million/ $149.9 million

    2. The Best Man Holiday- $30.6/ $30.6

    3. Last Vegas- $8.8/ $46.9

    4. Free Birds- $8.3/ $42.2

    5. Bad Grandpa- $7.6/ $90.2

    6. Gravity- $6.2/ $240.5

    7. Ender’s Game- $6.2/ $53.7

    8. 12 Years a Slave- $4.7/ $24.9

    9. Captain Phillips- $4.5/ $97.6

    10. About Time- $3.6/ $11.5

  • Review: Thor: The Dark World

Thor was Marvel’s biggest gamble when it released in 2011. Movie audiences had accepted Iron Man but would they connect with a superhero steeped in mythology and magic? Luckily Thor was a hit thanks to good casting, Kenneth Branagh’s direction and knowing that the film was one of the lead-ins to The Avengers. Now comes the tricky part; making the character’s continuing story interesting.

Thor: The Dark World takes place two years after Thor and one year after The Avengers with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) doing her scientist thing and following spatial anomalies in hopes of tracking down her god with the perfect abs. This leads to her finding a weapon called the Aether which binds itself to her and reawakens Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), a Dark Elf who needs it to cover the nine realms in eternal darkness. You know, comic book stuff.

When Malekith attacks Asgard and kills one of their own it is all hands on deck to bring him down. The only difference is that Thor and Odin’s plans are exact opposites with Odin acting like the young, war-hungry Thor from the first film letting vengeance guide him and Thor wants to lead Malekith far away from Asgard to spare as many lives as possible. I liked this twist in roles that shows exactly how Thor has embraced his role and matured.

One large plus that the Thor franchise has over any other Marvel movie is that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is going to be involved. He once again steals the movie as the fallen prince who tried to take over Earth. He spends his days locked in a dungeon prison until Thor has no choice but to break him out to show him a secret path out of Asgard. As with everything involving the character there are many illusions and lots of subterfuge involved and some of it you will not see coming, even though you know Loki has something planned out.

    thor_dark_world

Thor: The Dark World benefits from its director, Alan Taylor. One of the regular directors for Game of Thrones, the show’s influence can be seen and felt all during the movie. From Asgardian forces in battle to how the city looks during celebrations and also with the clothing that is less royalty and more cloaks of Westeros. Branagh used his Shakespeare background in the first movie to the best of his ability and Taylor does the same with his use of realism in a fantasy setting.

With Loki taking up the grey area between good and evil Malekith is enough of a presence to keep the proceedings moving forward. He is not a legendary villain like Red Skull but he is a constant threat even if his character and motivation is a bit by the numbers.

The secondary cast have plenty of time to contribute. This could have easily been Thor & Loki’s Excellent Adventure but the script gives each character at least one or two times to shine. Sif and the Warriors Two (I say two because Hogun is helping his home world to begin the movie) are just as loyal to Thor as ever even to bring treason on themselves. I like how they are already planting seeds for the third Thor with Sif’s apparent feelings for Thor and her obvious wonder at why he loves a mortal. Zachary Levi takes over the role of Fandral (which he was cast for in the first movie but had to decline due to his schedule) and is charming as hell. Idris Elba as Heimdall once again proves that he is amazing in everything and even Rene Russo’s Frigga gets a chance to show off more than a glimpse of being a badass for a nice change of pace.

I am here to tell you that reports of Thor: The Dark World’s mediocrity are exaggerated. Now that we know these characters we get a chance to see them further fleshed out including the parts that could have easily been left by the wayside. Where Iron Man has Tony Stark’s personality and Captain America has his never-ending belief in doing good to push their roles forward, Thor relies on family ties and they are explored and exploited in good ways in Thor: The Dark World and it does it while setting up Thor 3, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers: Age of Ultron at the same time. By the hammer of Thor indeed.

Thor landed in first as expected with $86.1 million which is nowhere near the insane $175 million Iron Man 3 opened with back in May but it was a good increase over the original film’s opening of $65 million in 2011. In two weeks the sequel has amassed a hefty $327 million worldwide and will pass the original’s entire theatrical run next week.

Thor and company should rule the box office again next week and then will have to get out of the way for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on November 22nd which is looking to have an insane $150 million opening.

    1. Thor: The Dark World- $86.1 million/ $86.1 million

Ender’s Game opened at number one as expected and the gross was right around expectations. Orson Scott Card’s classic sci-fi story had a huge cast including Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford and Viola Davis but could not break through to a huge opening collecting $28 million. With Thor opening next week it does not bode well for Ender’s staying power. Last Vegas (or Geriatric Hangover) finished in third just ahead of the animated Free Birds. Gravity earned $15.1 million in its fifth week of release.

Thor: The Dark World was the big story even though it does not open here until next week. The God of Thunder opened in multiple markets overseas and brought in a mighty $109 million. That is a huge head start on what is sure to be a big weekend coming up for the Marvel film.

    1. Ender’s Game- $28.0 million/ $28.0 million

    2. Bad Grandpa- $20.5/ $62.0

    3. Last Vegas- $16.5/ $16.5

    4. Free Birds- $16.2/ $16.2

    5. Gravity- $15.1/ $219.1

Leave it to Johnny Knoxville to throw a wrench in the normal Hollywood proceedings. Gravity seemed set up to finish first for the fourth week in a row but America can not deny their enduring love of all things Jackass. The comedy brought in $32 million far surpassing the estimates of $19 million. I think it is easy to say that we will be getting a Jackass 4 or Bad Grandpa 2 before we know it.

Gravity continued its amazing run bringing in $20.3 million and its worldwide total now sits at $364 million. Ridley Scott’s The Counselor was a disappointment this weekend only taking in $8 million. I figured more people would be interested in seeing Cameron Diaz have sex with a car but I guess not. And yes, I said have sex “with” not “in” a car.

Next week will get a mega sized boost with Thor: The Dark World releasing. I am interested to see how well it performs being the first solo Marvel movie after Avengers not involving Tony Stark and being Marvel’s first fall release.

    1. Bad Grandpa- $32.0 million/ $32.0 million

    2. Gravity- $20.3/ $199.8

    3. Captain Phillips- $11.8/ $70.0

    4. The Counselor- $8.0/ $8.0

    5. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- $6.1/ $100.6

    6. Carrie- $5.9/ $26.0

    7. Escape Plan- $4.3/ $17.4

    8. 12 Years a Slave- $2.1/ $3.4

    9. Enough Said- $1.5/ $13.0

    10. Prisoners- $1.0/ $59.1

Not even a blood-spattered Carrie could take down Gravity this week. For the third week in a row the Alfonso Cuarón film took the top spot at the box office grossing $31 million. It looks like the only movie that can bring it down to Earth will be Thor: The Dark World on November 8th.

The remake of the classic Stephen King novel and 1976 movie finished in third with $17 million ahead of all other new releases this week which included Escape Plan and The Fifth Estate.

    1. Gravity- $31.0 million/ $170.6 million

There have been so many character posters for Thor: The Dark World that we may soon get some for the crew as well. Get ready for those associate producer and best boy posters soon.

Ray Stevenson’s Volstagg and Zachary Levi’s Fandral are the focus today. Zachary Levi was originally going to play Fandral in the first Thor but could not get his schedule to work with the filming of Chuck so he had to pass. Josh Dallas played the character and in a weird twist of fate could not play him in the second film because he is too busy acting all goody goody as Prince Charming on Once Upon A Time, so Levi gets a second chance.

Thor: The Dark World releases on November 8th.
