    ign-logo-610

Sad news today as IGN has announced that the 1UP, Gamespy and UGO sections of the company are being shut down and a large group of employees are being laid off.

A spokesman for IGN had a statement:

“We are focusing on our two flagship brands, IGN and AskMen. Unfortunately, as a result, we have made the decision to close sites and restructure our teams accordingly.”

IGN was bought recently by J2 Global which is the parent company of Ziff-Davis Media.

We hope all those affected get snatched up quickly by other companies and that they land on their feet soon.

IGN Entertainment has a new owner. After being on the auction block for six months J2 Global (parent company of Ziff Davis) has purchased the internet gaming giant for an undisclosed amount from News Corp.

News Corp. bought IGN back in 2005 for $650 million and rumors suggest that the sale was for much, much less than that amount. The sale will include all of IGN’s other networks and sites like 1UP.com.

    IGN– Journey
    Joystiq– Journey

    Game Trailers– XCOM: Enemy Unknown

With The Walking Dead winning GOTY at the VGA’s, this year was really a great year for smaller games. XCOM may surprise some people but it is good to see the turn based RTS get back into the premier game talk and on consoles no less.
