    Jurassic-World

    Movies

    Gravity

Sandra Bullock could make up to $70 million for her performance in the Oscar-nominated movie. She made $20 million for signing on and will make 15% of the total gross which sits at around $700 million worldwide as well as about $20 million from DVD/Blu-Ray sales, TV deals, etc. And yet, I will still feel like she got robbed if she loses the Best Actress race at the Oscars.

    Ant-Man

Patrick Wilson, who played Nite Owl in Watchmen, has signed on for an unspecified role in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man. Could anyone see him playing a young Hank Pym? Me too.

    Jurassic World

Vincent D’Onofrio will play the villain in 2015’s Jurassic World joining Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. One would guess he will not play a giant cockroach…or Thor.

    James Bond

Ralph Fiennes has said that Bond 24 will begin filming in October for a November 2015 release. It has to follow Skyfall, one of the greatest Bond films ever made. No pressure guys.

    TV

    Parks and Recreation

First lady Michelle Obama will guest star on the season finale. This is just leading to the inevitable team-up of Michelle and Burt Macklin.

    Games

    Nintendo 64

There will soon be a way to convert you N64 to accept HDMI connections. This is the wonders of the human brain at its finest.

    Titanfall

Developer Respawn has announced that a Season Pass will not be released for Titanfall. You will, most likely, purchase the DLC packs individually. To me this says that there is no set number of DLC releases. Could be one, could be eight.

    Halo

Phil Spencer from Microsoft has said that 343 Industries has some big Halo news coming at this year’s E3. If this is a big build up to a Halo 2 Anniversary announcement, I will be disappointed. Halo 5 or go home.

  • Here Are Your 2014 Oscar Nominees

Looks like it will be another one of those years for Leonardo DiCaprio.

This morning the nominees for the Academy Awards were announced and DiCaprio was nominated for his work in The Wolf of Wall Street (which was amazing) but I can already feel a McConaughey win on the horizon for Dallas Buyers Club. But I will make my predictions at a later date.

Nine films were nominated for Best Picture including my favorite film of 2013, Gravity, which tied with American Hustle for the most nominations with 10 each. The only surprise, if there was one, is that Her snuck into the Best Picture race. There may be nine nominees but I feel like it is a four picture race with 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Gravity and The Wolf of Wall Street. It is one of the most unique years for nominations and will make watching the show more fun because of it.

Also, let this sink in; Jonah Hill is now a two-time Oscar nominee. He completely deserves it this year for his role in The Wolf of Wall Street.

See the list of nominees below (for the big awards anyway). The Academy Awards air on March 2nd.

Leave it to Johnny Knoxville to throw a wrench in the normal Hollywood proceedings. Gravity seemed set up to finish first for the fourth week in a row but America can not deny their enduring love of all things Jackass. The comedy brought in $32 million far surpassing the estimates of $19 million. I think it is easy to say that we will be getting a Jackass 4 or Bad Grandpa 2 before we know it.

Gravity continued its amazing run bringing in $20.3 million and its worldwide total now sits at $364 million. Ridley Scott’s The Counselor was a disappointment this weekend only taking in $8 million. I figured more people would be interested in seeing Cameron Diaz have sex with a car but I guess not. And yes, I said have sex “with” not “in” a car.

Next week will get a mega sized boost with Thor: The Dark World releasing. I am interested to see how well it performs being the first solo Marvel movie after Avengers not involving Tony Stark and being Marvel’s first fall release.

    1. Bad Grandpa- $32.0 million/ $32.0 million

    2. Gravity- $20.3/ $199.8

    3. Captain Phillips- $11.8/ $70.0

    4. The Counselor- $8.0/ $8.0

    5. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- $6.1/ $100.6

    6. Carrie- $5.9/ $26.0

    7. Escape Plan- $4.3/ $17.4

    8. 12 Years a Slave- $2.1/ $3.4

    9. Enough Said- $1.5/ $13.0

    10. Prisoners- $1.0/ $59.1

Not even a blood-spattered Carrie could take down Gravity this week. For the third week in a row the Alfonso Cuarón film took the top spot at the box office grossing $31 million. It looks like the only movie that can bring it down to Earth will be Thor: The Dark World on November 8th.

The remake of the classic Stephen King novel and 1976 movie finished in third with $17 million ahead of all other new releases this week which included Escape Plan and The Fifth Estate.

    1. Gravity- $31.0 million/ $170.6 million

    2. Captain Phillips- $17.3/ $53.3

    3. Carrie- $17.0/ $17.0

    4. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- $10.1/ $93.1

    5. Escape Plan- $9.8/ $9.8

    6. Prisoners- $2.0/ $57.3

    7. Enough Said- $1.8/ $10.8

    8. The Fifth Estate- $1.7/ $1.7

    9. Runner Runner $1.6/ $17.5

Captain Phillips had a great start in its first weekend but still could not catch Gravity. The space drama fell only 21% grossing $44.2 million. That is an incredible holdover for a fall film. The great reviews and word of mouth (check out my review here) have made the wonderful film a true blockbuster. In two weeks it has grossed $191 million worldwide.

Tom Hanks may not have finished in first but he returned to theaters strong. Captain Phillips opened with $26 million, well above expectations. After a slow start to the year for award worthy movies, it looks like we have had two open up back to back with Gravity and Captain Phillips.

Machete Kills had a huge cast and a lot of promotion and could only manage a sad $3.7 million. It is the lowest gross for a movie opening in over 2,500 theaters in…well, forever.

    1. Gravity- $44.2 million/ $123.4 million

    2. Captain Phillips- $26.0/ $26.0

    3. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- $14.2/ $78.0

    4. Machete Kills- $3.7/ $3.7

    5. Runner Runner- $3.7/ $14.1

    6. Prisoners- $3.6/ $53.6

    7. Insidious Chapter 2- $2.6/ $78.4

    8. Rush- $2.4/ $22.2

    9. Don Jon- $2.3/ $20.1

    10. Baggage Claim- $2.0/ $18.2

Space is as beautiful as it is frightening. It has enamored man since we were chiseling wheels out of stone. Select few have gotten to fly among the stars and there have been many movies made about those adventures like The Right Stuff and Apollo 13. I am here to say that Alfonso Cuaròn’s Gravity has set a new standard for the genre. It will take you into unimaginable despair, palpable tension and a sense of hope, all set against one of the most beautiful backdrops ever put to film.

And it does so in 90 minutes.

    *Minor Spoilers Ahead*

When Gravity opens we are greeted with a breathtaking view of Earth. Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is having a hard time keeping her lunch down as she works on the Hubble telescope during her first space mission. The counterpoint to Stone is Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), who is a veteran astronaut on his final mission into the stars. As Stone upgrades the telescope, Kowalski is having fun testing a new thruster pack while listening to country music and regaling Houston with his many stories of different women who have broken his heart. He begins each story with “Houston, I have a bad feeling about this mission” and as a bit of history embedded in the movie, Cuarón has Ed Harris voicing the Houston end of communication.

As repairs continue Houston warns the team of a Russian anti-satellite test that has gone wrong and has created a debris field that is growing larger as it takes out more satellites (think The Perfect Storm, just with satellite parts). Stone and Kowalski are unable to take cover in time and are separated. As Stone spins out of control, helpless, Kowalski uses his jetpack to reach her and tether them together. Their shuttle being completely rendered useless, Kowalski decides to try and get them to the International Space Station and use an escape pod to reach Earth.

Do not be fooled into thinking this is simply “Cast Away in Space”. There is no space volleyball. Clooney is a prime player and the voice of calm and reason for much longer than you think. But when this becomes Bullock’s film, she absolutely owns every minute of it. I always wondered why she won an Oscar for The Blind Side, but I have to say now that if she is not nominated again and a serious contender to win, there is something wrong in Hollywood. She takes you through a gamut of emotions that can rarely be matched. She runs through the five steps of (space) grief, albeit not in the usual order. I so much want to tell you more about the latter half of the film but can not in good conscience do that, needless to say that Bullock is a marvel to watch.

I am not a big fan of 3D movies, especially these days with all the post-produced effects as a money grab. I watched Gravity in IMAX 3D and was infinitely happy I did. It is the best use of the format since Avatar (I am not comparing the movies, mind you, just the use of 3D). More than once my jaw was agape at the immense depth of view when you were surrounded by nothing but stars. I flinched once during one particular scene involving the debris field, which comes along more than once. The use of practical effects and CGI are truly amazing.

Alfonso Cuarón was already one of my favorite directors having done Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and one of my favorite films ever, Children of Men. He has hit new heights with Gravity in ways I never thought possible. For people like me that grew up staring into the stars and wondering what it would be like to float among them, he has given one of the most realistic looks at what it is like. The child in me wants to thank him for the wonder and the adult me wants to praise him for the technical and emotional ride that he has crafted.

Gravity is an achievement that should not be missed. It is my favorite movie of the year, by far.

It is the reason why we go to movies.

    NERD RATING- 9.5/10

Maybe people can make good decisions when they go see movies. Proof of that happened this weekend with Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. Riding a wave of stellar reviews, the film set a new October record with $55.5 million beating Paranormal Activity 3’s $52.5 million in 2011. Estimates were expecting it to gross in the mid-30’s so this may be a huge surprise to some.

Since audiences were spending time in space it meant that Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake were left with scraps. Runner Runner could only manage $7.6 million.

    1. Gravity- $55.5 million/ $55.5 million

    2. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- $21.5/ $61.5

    3. Runner Runner- $7.6/ $7.6

    4. Prisoners- $5.7/ $47.8

    5. Rush- $4.4/ $18.0

    6. Don Jon- $4.1/ $16.0

    7. Baggage Claim- $4.1/ $15.1

    8. Insidious Chapter 2- $3.8/ $74.7

    9. Pulling Strings- $2.5/ $2.5

    10. Enough Said- $2.1/ $5.1

  • New Trailer For Gravity Brings The Horrors Of Space

We all have that inner child inside that has wanted to be an astronaut. To go out and explore the beyond for the benefit of mankind. But Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity will take a look at the horrific side of the unknown. The loneliness that will await you when you are left drifting with no hope.

The new trailer shows a bit of this as Sandra Bullock begins to drift helplessly and send out word for any kind of help. I, for one, can not wait for this to come out. It is the right kind of tension I look for in a movie.

    Gravity releases on October 4th.

Director Alfonso Cuaron’s labor of love, Gravity, is set for an October release and the first trailer looks extraordinary. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as two astronauts who are left drifting in space, tethered together when their station is destroyed during a space walk. To me, this is the type of movie I go to the theater for to experience on the big screen and not wait for home release.

    Gravity releases on October 4th.
