Monsters University held on to the top spot at the box office this weekend, but got better competition than anyone thought from The Heat. World War Z held up well in its second weekend with almost $30 million for a total domestic gross of $123.7 million in two weeks. Man of Steel continued its rise becoming the second highest grossing movie of the year behind Iron Man 3. The Superman reboot has crossed $500 million worldwide.

Monsters University took the top spot at the box office this past weekend. That was expected. What was not expected was that the long-suffering Brad Pitt zombie flick World War Z would blow away expectations in its opening. The $200 million dollar film which went through multiple delays and re-shoots was only expected to bring in about $40 million. After a solid $25 million Friday it went on to gross $66 million, which is the largest opening in Pitt’s career.

Man of Steel fell off steeply, but still managed $41 million and has already passed Superman Returns gross in only two weeks.

It looks like 2013 is the year of the true return of Superman. After over a year of hype and a marketing blitz seldom seen, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel opened to the tune of $113 million making it the larget June opening ever. When you add in the Thursday night 7PM screenings the tally sits at $125 million. That is way ahead of Warner’s safe estimate of $85 million and shows that there is another viable DC movie franchise out there besides Batman.

    2. This Is The End-  $20.5/ $32.8

What was supposed to be a ho-hum weekend at the box office turned into one of the biggest surprises of the year. The Ethan Hawke thriller The Purge, which was made for only $3 million, cashed in on the light release weekend to the tune of $36.3 million dollars making it the highest grossing weekend for an R-rated movie this year. This left Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn wanting as the Wedding Crashers could not recreate the same magic for The Internship which managed to bring in only $18.1 million for a fourth place finish.

    1. The Purge- $36.3 million/ $36.3

    2. Fast & Furious 6- $19.8/ $202.9

It seems that even downplaying M. Night Shyamalan’s part in After Earth had no effect on its box office. It bombed anyway. The father/son combo sci-fi piece starring Will and Jaden Smith could only manage a third place finish behind last week’s champ Fast & Furious 6 and the magicians of Now You See Me. After Earth’s weekend total is the worst opening for a Will Smith summer movie in twenty years.

    1. Fast & Furious- $34.5 million/ $170.3 million

    2. Now You See Me- $28.0/ $28.0

    3. After Earth- $27.0/ $27.0

    4. Star Trek Into Darkness- $16.4/ $181.1

    5. Epic- $16.4/ $65.1

    6. The Hangover Part III- $15.9/ $88.0

    7. Iron Man 3- $8.0/ $384.7

Now that it is officially 2013 we can look back on the year that was at the box office. 2012 set a new record with almost 10.8 billion dollars which overtakes 2009’s total of 10.6 billion. No doubt having so many choices at the theater feature wise helped out receipt totals with many films being in IMAX, 3D, IMAX 3D and theaters that have D-BOX motion chairs.

The big winner of 2012, by far, was The Avengers which took in $623.3 million domestically and over 1.5 billion dollars worldwide as well as setting the single weekend record with $207.4 million in just three days. The Dark Knight Rises did not make as much as it predecessor, The Dark Knight, domestically but made more in worldwide totals.

A few of the surprises of the year were the comedy Ted which was Seth MacFarlane’s first feature film and grossed $218.6 million off of a 50 million dollar budget. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s 21 Jump Street came in with little expectations and pulled in over 138 million dollars.

2013 is loaded with releases including the second Hunger Games film, Catching Fire, and the return of The Man of Steel but may have a hard time keeping pace with 2012’s record pace.
