  • Review Roundup: Call Of Duty: Ghosts

    untitled

It is finally here FPS fans. Your yearly crack has arrived. Today sees the release of Call of Duty: Ghosts that is handled by the team at Infinity Ward this year. Now I know this may surprise a lot of you but there is actually a story mode to this game. Who knows if it is good or not? Let’s find out what the reviews are saying about this year’s version.

Will we be reviewing it? Gladly. When someone sends us a copy of it to be reviewed otherwise enjoy these reviews!

    IGN– 8.8/10

Single Player- “But like previous CoDs, the story of Ghosts struggles to remain in focus amidst the fray of explosive cinematic moments and relentless firefights. Narrated loading sequences with stylized story animations push the campaign forward, but only last for one or two minutes before launching back into the action. It’s there, on the front lines, that much of the plot progression is presented and oftentimes lost.”

Multiplayer- “Ghosts presents an array of alternative routes, making team play far more effective than traditional run-and-gun strategy – in fact, running around these large maps gets lonely and boring. Traditional lone wolf-style play also throws a wrench in the spawn system, making enemies often appear nearby without warning. Playing in a well-coordinated group is more gratifying than ever, but more casual solo games can be frustrating.”

    Kotaku– Not Yet

Single Player- “It’s funny—playing through the initial section of scripted events where you run through your under-attack town, all I could think was, wow. This isn’t nearly as well-paced, or as deliberate as say, the start of The Last of Us—where everything seems so tight and considered that you forget the game is just mostly making you walk forward while stuff (like explosions, crashes, deaths) happen around you.”

Multiplayer- “Playing still feels tense, and this tension is sometimes punctuated by the sudden high of kills. You’ll still live or die by your reflexes. The customization options are still robust (moreso than before, actually), and the number of things you can level and earn experience points for is dizzying.”

    Gamespot– 8/10

Single Player- “The whole thing feels like a geopolitical Mad Lib, but a functional and rather harmless one. Ghosts delivers just enough narrative to serve as a catalyst for its whirlwind tour through global warzones, while resisting the urge to club you over the head with plot twists and gratuitous shock-and-awe moments.”

Multiplayer- “A more familiar experience can be found in Ghosts’ competitive multiplayer. The frantic pacing and close-quarters encounters are every bit as enjoyable as they’ve ever been, augmented by contextual lean and running slide abilities that make for more fluid transitions in and out of cover. Infinity Ward has taken a delicate approach to the existing multiplayer progression, though a new perk weighting system promotes better player balance while still giving you plenty of ways to micromanage your loadouts.”

    Polygon– 6.5/10

Single Player- With the end of the Modern Warfare series in 2011 and the dawn of a new console generation on the horizon, Ghosts could start from scratch, with no backstory to hold it back. A new storyline and new characters in a new setting seemed like a great opportunity. That freedom nonetheless results in one of the sloppiest storylines in Call of Duty history.”

Multiplayer- Call of Duty: Ghosts too often feels like a me-too product, never breaking entirely new ground. Meanwhile, Infinity Ward has stripped out some much-loved features from Black Ops 2, including League Play, replay recording and player-created emblems.”

    Destructoid– 5/10

Single Player- “The campaign isn’t exactly bad, but it is a banal shooting gallery without the remarkable setpieces or memorable moments to carry it. Very much a COD-by-numbers affair, players quickly blitz through the usual tasks with dutiful obligation.”

Multiplayer- “While there are some new toys to play with, and you can even customize the look of your character (as well as play as a woman, finally), the core experience feels like business as usual, moreso since we’ve lost the near-future gadgets found in 2012’s installment.”

    Game Informer– 8/10

Single Player- “As stupid as the story is, I found myself enjoying it for exactly that reason. This is a big, dumb action game, and it makes no attempt to be more than that. Instead of the convoluted techno-babble of the Modern Warfare series, Ghosts’ campaign is simply about blowing up everything you see in progressively bigger ways. It’s short and wastes no time with character development, opting instead to shuttle you along to the next exploding satellite station or chaotic chase scene.”

Multiplayer- “Grind mixes Halo’s Headhunter mode with Call of Duty’s own Kill Confirmed match type, and it results in some tense moments as you struggle to return dog tags before you’re killed. Blitz is fast-paced and fun, tasking players with sprinting into a designated scoring zone before enemies stop them with a hail of gunfire. Search and Rescue is a smart variant of a series favorite, and gives players hope to return after being eliminated. These new match types can be a lot of fun, but the only thing that feels different is the method of scoring.”

By the look of it some people are hitting the wall when it comes to Call of Duty. It will still sell millions of copies but the reviews are showing a downward trend and will sales be next in the next few years?

  • The Call Of Duty: Ghosts Live Action Trailer Is A Michael Bay Wet Dream

Another year, another Call of Duty game which means another live action trailer. Over the past few years Jonah Hill, Kobe Bryant and Robert Downey, Jr. have starred in the ads for the biggest game on the planet (I don’t like saying it but it is true).

This year’s commercial for [amazon_link id=”B003O6CBIG” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Call of Duty: Ghosts[/amazon_link] is brought to us by The Wolverine director James Mangold and stars Megan Fox who continually makes herself relevant despite doing nothing.

Call of Duty: Ghosts releases on November 5th.

Bungie has given a release window in their newest trailer for Destiny which takes players deep within the moon to show the creatures you will be facing in the developers massive follow-up to Halo. Those who pre-order the game will get access to the beta when it starts early next year.

    Destiny releases in Spring 2014.

Activision and Bungie have released the box art for their highly anticipated game Destiny. There is nothing really bad about it, though I think I would have liked the simpler picture they have been using for posters and ads with the planet sitting against a starry backdrop.

    I want this one.
    I want this one.

Destiny is Bungie’s first independent game since breaking away from Microsoft and the Halo franchise. It is expected to release in 2014.

  • Activision Bringing Six Games To Wii U This Fall

No one can blame Activision for contributing to the [amazon_link id=”B009AGXH64″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wii U[/amazon_link] game drought. They have just announced that six games will be making their way onto Nintendo’s struggling console this fall including Call of Duty: Ghosts.

    Here is the lineup:

    -Call of Duty: Ghosts

    -Angry Birds Star Wars

    -Angry Birds Trilogy

    -Skylanders Swap Force

    -Spongebob Squarepants: Plankton’s Robotic Revenge

    -Wipeout: Create & Crash

Really none of these are system sellers (since COD is on every system already) but it will at least give owners a few new things to think about getting, especially if you have kids.

Merry Christmas Johnny! It’s Spongebob and Call of Duty!

  • Activision Tells High Moon Employees, “Thanks For Making Our Game, Get The Fu** Out”.

Activision has laid off forty employees at High Moon Studios after they completed their upcoming Deadpool game. It is not news when studios have layoffs, but it is always sad news to hear. Activision released a statement about the move.

“Activision Publishing consistently works to align its costs with its revenues – this is an ongoing process,” Activision says. “With the completion of development on Deadpool, we are taking a reduction in staff at High Moon Studios to better align our development talent against our slate. Approximately, 40 full-time employees will be impacted globally. We are offering those employees who are impacted outplacement counseling services.”

We hope all those affected find new work quickly and we look forward to playing [amazon_link id=”B008LW4SCU” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Deadpool[/amazon_link] when it releases this summer.

  • TMNT Come ‘Out Of The Shadows’ This Summer

One of the greatest days of my childhood was the day that I got Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game for my NES. After pumping quarter after quarter of my mother’s hard earned money in the cabinet version, the mere fact I could spend as much time as I wanted at home bashing the Foot Clan to my heart’s content is one of those moments that make a childhood.

Now Activision may be trying to recapture a bit of that innocence, before life took over and showed me how jaded and cynical I should be, with the release of TMNT: Out of the Shadows. All that has been released is the short trailer below, but it looks like a straight up brawler in the vein of The Arcade Game and starring the newest incarnation of TMNT seen on Nickelodeon. Get the Part Wagon ready!

TMNT: Out of the Shadows releases this summer on Playstation Network and Xbox Live.

  • Bungie’s Brave New Destiny

This past weekend Bungie, the creators of Halo, finally took the covers off of their next project, Journey. Ambitious does not begin to describe what Destiny is. Not only is this the company’s first game outside the safety of Microsoft’s umbrella, but it is an entire series of games that will involve a brand new universe and occupy the developers next ten years. Ten years!!

When they struck a deal with Activision to publish the game the documents revealed showed that Destiny is being made already sequel ready and the first game will release this fall on Xbox 360 and PS3 and also, presumably, for the next gen consoles as well. Every sequel after will be released strictly for the next generation.

Destiny’s plot revolves around the last portion of humanity to survive an apocalyptic event. The only piece of humanity left were saved when a mysterious ship, known as The Traveler, began to float above a section of Earth. It is always there, hanging as a somber protector for what reason no one knows. Humanity has put the pieces back together under The Traveler and begun to explore the galaxy again. With this comes new threats in the form of alien life that is looking to finish off the remnants of humanity. Destiny will see you play as a guardian, tasked to push back these forces and protect humanity.

Bungie is coining a new term for Destiny’s gameplay, the “shared world shooter”. Not wanting to call the game a true MMO, Destiny will be available to play completely in single player, or at any time, you can join some friends or strangers and help out in missions they are doing and decide to stick together or go do your own thing with your story. How this will work cross-platform remains to be seen. Will it be only 360 players that can match up with 360 players and vice versa or will Bungie somehow work there magic and have all consoles playing on Destiny’s world in one big sci-fi love fest?

Watching the video above also shows off that social integration will play a big part in Destiny. While the specifics are not known as to what will be the basis of the app, it would be easy to assume you would get story updates as well as messages from friends as they interact in the world. You may be able to set up party missions but that is just pure speculation on my part.

It looks as though you will not be stuck on Earth in Destiny. You will have the ability to go to other planets, but it is not known if the space travel will be able to be controlled or if Destiny will have space battles. Even if the first game does not, it would not surprise me to see them added in sequels, especially with the horsepower of the next-gen consoles.

This is just the opening salvo of Destiny from Bungie. Expect to see a lot more from now until its planned fall release. I would expect a massive blowout at E3 this year to truly give gamers a sense of the scale of this project.

  • The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Release Date Change

Fans of The Walking Dead will not have to wait as long to play as the Dixon brothers. Activision has moved up the release of [amazon_link id=”B008J16ARY” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct[/amazon_link] by a week to March 19th. This is a very smart move because even for a game with the name The Walking Dead on it, to release it on the same day as Bioshock Infinite was not going to help sales.

The game will have you taking control of Merle and Daryl Dixon as they make their way through Atlanta trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. It is set before the events of the television show.

  • The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Release Date Announced

    gameplay_videon_mutatkozik_a_the_walking_dead_survival_instinct_1-620x

Well let’s add another game to the huge tsunami of games coming out this spring. Activision’s [amazon_link id=”B008J16ARY” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct[/amazon_link] , the first person survival shooter based on the AMC show (not the comics) is jumping head first into the deep end of the video game pool by releasing on the same day as Bioshock Infinite.

The game will follow brother Merle and Daryl (voiced by show actors, Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus) as they make their way through Atlanta in events that pre-date the show. Activision is playing up the survival aspect of the game saying that supplies will be few and far between so conservation and smart play will be necessary.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will release on March 26th.
