If Vladimir Putin can be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, why can’t the people at Funny or Die win one for this wonderful video? Now I am running through all my favorite movies in my head and imagining the Alan Silvestri theme at key parts. Roy Batty catching Deckard and lifting him in the pouring rain or the moment Taylor says “take your stinking paws off me you damn, dirty ape”.
Many of you may know by now that author Tom Clancy passed away last night. The author had over 100 million books in print and his most famous character was undoubtedly Jack Ryan. Paramount has picked today to release the first poster for their Jack Ryan reboot, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Whether it was planned ahead of time or done as a tribute to Clancy, it still seems a little odd.
Despite the sad news of Clancy’s passing, there is good reason to be excited about this new movie. Chris Pine takes over the role previously played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. Kenneth Branagh is pulling double duty as director and villain. Kevin Costner and the human stick figure Keira Knightley also star.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit releases on Christmas Day.
Universal and Legendary Pictures have announced that their movie based on Blizzard’s Warcraft franchise will be released on December 15, 2013. The movie is being directed by Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones. Casting has begun with rumors that Colin Farrell, Paula Patton and Anton Yelchin have been approached for lead roles with Anson Mount from Hell on Wheels up for a role as well.
Warcraft will certainly have a battle when it opens. Star Wars Episode VII is expected to release in December 2015 as well. As loved as Warcraft is, if the movies open close together, it may be a losing battle going against Star Wars.
Alright J.J. Abrams complainers, the director has seen the error of his ways. Your four year mission of pissing and moaning about lens flare may finally be over. Let’s forget that both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness were wonderful movies that brought the crew of the Starship Enterprise back into mainstream pop culture after not mattering for almost a decade.
Abrams admitted he had a problem in an interview with Crave, even admitting that his wife was annoyed.
“I know I get a lot of grief for that. But I’ll tell you, there are times when I’m working on a shot, I think, ‘Oh this would be really cool… with a lens flare.’ But I know it’s too much, and I apologize. I’m so aware of it now. I was showing my wife an early cut of Star Trek Into Darkness and there was this one scene where she was literally like, ‘I just can’t see what’s going on. I don’t understand what that is.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I went too nuts on this.’”
“This is how stupid it was,” J.J. Abrams added. “I actually had to use ILM [Industrial Light & Magic] to remove lens flare in a couple of shots, which is, I know, moronic. But I think admitting you’re an addict is the first step towards recovery.”
Now we are getting to the good stuff. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’s new trailer is here and if you were hoping the second film would stick closer to the book then you are going to be disappointed, but for fans who have not read the book (really, it has been out 76 years, come on) and fans (like me) that don’t mind creative liberties this looks like a whole lot of fun.
We get a few highlights including Legolas back in action and a love affair story with Evangeline Lilly’s Tauriel, Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman and the big daddy at then end is hearing Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, which he absolutely owns.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug releases on December 13th.
We are only a few months away from returning to Middle Earth with the second part of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. A new banner has just been released featuring Bilbo, Thorin, Kili, Fili and Dwalin. The Desolation of Smaug will also see the return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug releases on December 13th.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 won the weekend with ease taking in $35 million with little competition. Ron Howard’s racing drama Rush finished in third behind last week’s winner Prisoners and Joseph Gordon Levitt’s directorial debut, Don Jon, finished with $9 million, already making back its budget.
Next week is an exciting one for fans of Alfonso Cuarón. The Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men director releases his long-awaited Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- $37.0 million/ $37.0 million
I really wish I could take credit for that name in the title. I can’t because I saw it online so I just have to applaud whoever thought of it.
Check out the first trailer for Need For Speed starring Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul. Now before watching I have to warn you that the preview does take a different route than the Fast & Furious series has. There are exotic cars, races and explosions, but the music choice is certainly classing up the joint.
There is really no way to prepare you for this other than to just lay it all out there. This group in Nashville have made Terminator 2 into a play called Terminator the Second which takes the James Cameron action classic and gives it the Shakespeare treatment. It is two things you never thought of combining, but when you watch it, you wonder why it took so long for this idea to come about.
They are performing on October 22nd at The Belcourt Theater which is in driving distance for me. In the words of Liz Lemon “I want to go to there”.
You can download the movie online on November 1st here.
Prisoners was the easy winner at the box office this past weekend. The kidnapping thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllanhaal had good reviews and took in $21.4 million. Insidious Chapter 2 fell off as expected and finished second with $14.5 million. The dance film Battle of the Year failed to find much support. I just figured it was 90 minutes of Chris Brown dancing and face punching women. The Wizard of OZ IMAX 3D also grossed $3 million from its re-release.
